Use JUnit Jupiter’s @ParameterizedTest with an argument source such as @CsvSource to run the same Selenium test once for each input row. Add junit-jupiter-params, make sure your build runs the Jupiter engine, and close each WebDriver session even when an assertion fails. The example below shows a browser session per invocation, with the input and expected result visible in each test’s display name.
What a parameterized Selenium test needs
JUnit Jupiter supplies the test runner and the values for each invocation; Selenium’s Java binding sends commands to the browser. A parameterized test needs both the @ParameterizedTest annotation and at least one argument source. Its source must provide values that match the test method’s parameters. See the JUnit 5.14.1 User Guide and the JUnit 5.13.1 API reference for source rules and method constraints.
The parameterized-test API requires the test method not be private or static. JUnit also needs its parameter-support artifact, junit-jupiter-params, and a build setup that discovers and runs Jupiter tests. Keep JUnit components on a consistent release or BOM strategy rather than mixing arbitrary versions.
Add the test dependencies
For Maven, declare Selenium’s Java binding and JUnit Jupiter dependencies in the project. This example uses Maven’s dependency management with the JUnit BOM; replace the Selenium version with one supported by your project and check the current Selenium installation guidance before adopting a version. Selenium’s official installation page includes Maven and Gradle examples: Selenium WebDriver: Install a Selenium library.

<dependency>
<groupId>org.junit.jupiter</groupId>
<artifactId>junit-jupiter
In a real Maven file, complete the last dependency with <version>5.14.1</version> (managed by the imported BOM) and <scope>test</scope>, then add a second test-scoped dependency for org.junit.jupiter:junit-jupiter-params. If your build already imports a JUnit BOM, use that project’s aligned version instead. Configure a test runner or build plugin that executes JUnit Jupiter; the artifact alone does not make a non-Jupiter runner discover the test.
Choose an argument source that fits the cases
@ValueSourceis concise when each invocation needs one argument.@CsvSourceputs small, fixed rows of multiple values beside the test. Each row becomes an invocation, with fields converted to the method parameter types where supported.@MethodSourceis a better fit for larger, computed, or constructed cases. It can provide anArgumentsstream or another return type accepted by JUnit.
Choose based on how much data you have, whether cases are easier to read inline or in Java, and how often they change. Check the relevant section of the JUnit User Guide for method-source visibility, argument conversion, aggregation, and source-specific requirements rather than assuming every source behaves identically.

Write the test with a session per invocation
This CSV example is schematic: replace the example URL, selectors, and expected headings with those from your application. Each argument row runs the test method separately, and the display name includes both inputs to make failed invocations easier to identify.
import static org.junit.jupiter.api.Assertions.assertEquals;
import org.junit.jupiter.params.ParameterizedTest;
import org.junit.jupiter.params.provider.CsvSource;
import org.openqa.selenium.By;
import org.openqa.selenium.WebDriver;
import org.openqa.selenium.chrome.ChromeDriver;
class SearchFormTest {
@ParameterizedTest(name = "search for {0} gives {1}")
@CsvSource({
"selenium, Selenium results",
"junit, JUnit results"
})
void searchShowsExpectedHeading(String query, String expectedHeading) {
WebDriver driver = new ChromeDriver();
try {
driver.get("https://example.test/search");
driver.findElement(By.name("q")).sendKeys(query);
driver.findElement(By.cssSelector("button[type='submit']")).click();
assertEquals(expectedHeading,
driver.findElement(By.cssSelector("h1")).getText());
} finally {
driver.quit();
}
}
}
The test creates a fresh browser for each invocation and puts quit() in a finally block, so an assertion failure does not skip cleanup. Alternatively, use JUnit lifecycle hooks: create the driver in @BeforeEach and close it in @AfterEach. Selenium’s Java example demonstrates that setup/teardown pattern, including a null check before quitting: Selenium WebDriver: First script.

Use a method source for richer test data
When cases need objects, calculations, or more than a few inline rows, keep the provider in code and expose meaningful invocation names. For example, a provider can return Stream<Arguments>; adapt the record and expected value to the application under test.
import static org.junit.jupiter.api.Assertions.assertEquals;
import java.util.stream.Stream;
import org.junit.jupiter.params.ParameterizedTest;
import org.junit.jupiter.params.provider.Arguments;
import org.junit.jupiter.params.provider.MethodSource;
import org.openqa.selenium.By;
import org.openqa.selenium.WebDriver;
import org.openqa.selenium.chrome.ChromeDriver;
class SearchFormMethodSourceTest {
static Stream<Arguments> searchCases() {
return Stream.of(
Arguments.of("selenium", "Selenium results"),
Arguments.of("junit", "JUnit results")
);
}
@ParameterizedTest(name = "query {0} displays {1}")
@MethodSource("searchCases")
void searchShowsExpectedHeading(String query, String expectedHeading) {
WebDriver driver = new ChromeDriver();
try {
driver.get("https://example.test/search");
driver.findElement(By.name("q")).sendKeys(query);
driver.findElement(By.cssSelector("button[type='submit']")).click();
assertEquals(expectedHeading,
driver.findElement(By.cssSelector("h1")).getText());
} finally {
driver.quit();
}
}
}
Static providers are a common straightforward choice; follow the current guide if using a non-static provider or a different supported source form. Keep each invocation independent: a provider supplies cases, not browser isolation, so avoid shared mutable browser state unless the lifecycle and concurrency behavior are intentional.

Manage drivers and choose where browsers run
Local execution
Start with a local browser when developing the test. Selenium Manager is bundled with current Selenium bindings and can act as a fallback when a driver has not been supplied; manually downloading a driver is therefore not mandatory in every setup. See Selenium Manager for current behavior and limitations. Browser availability and compatibility still depend on the machine and installed software.
Remote execution
Use Selenium Grid when the suite needs distributed execution or a broader matrix of browsers and operating systems. Grid changes where WebDriver commands run; the JUnit parameter source and test method still define the input cases. Selenium’s documentation describes scaling across browser and operating-system combinations: Selenium Grid. Compare the extra setup and operational control against the browser/OS coverage your suite needs.

Handle failures and keep runs reliable
- No parameter source: Add an argument source such as
@ValueSource,@CsvSource, or@MethodSourcealongside@ParameterizedTest. - Argument mismatch: Make the number and types of provided values match the method parameters. Check CSV delimiters, quoting, and conversion rules for values that contain commas or need non-string types.
- Tests are not discovered: Confirm
junit-jupiter-paramsis present, JUnit components are aligned, and the Maven/Gradle test setup runs the Jupiter engine rather than only a different JUnit runner. - Browser remains open after a failure: Ensure session cleanup is guaranteed with
finallyor a lifecycle teardown hook. Do not putquit()only after the assertion. - Driver startup fails: Check that the browser is installed and supported, inspect the Selenium Manager output, and supply a compatible driver explicitly if automatic management is unsuitable for the environment.
- Intermittent failures under parallel runs: Check whether invocations share a browser, account, data record, or application state. Use isolated sessions and test data, or control parallel execution when shared resources cannot safely be used concurrently.
Parameterized tests produce separate invocations, which improves failure localization when names expose the case. They do not make those invocations safe to run concurrently against shared state; decide lifecycle and parallel execution together.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can a parameterized test use more than one argument source?
A parameterized test needs an argument source, and source annotations and argument consumption have specific rules. Consult the JUnit guide for the supported combinations and how arguments are supplied.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Does Selenium Manager remove the need to install a browser?
No. Selenium Manager can help manage a missing driver, but the browser itself must be available in the execution environment.
