For desktop Chromium-based Opera, use Opera’s OperaChromiumDriver project with Selenium 4: start the OperaDriver service, create Selenium’s ChromeOptions, set Opera’s executable path if needed, and connect with webdriver.Remote(). The project documents this browser-specific route; do not assume a plain webdriver.Opera() call or Selenium Manager will configure current Opera automatically.
The documented pattern is not a verified compatibility promise for every current Opera, OperaDriver, Selenium, operating-system, and Python combination. Check those versions together before relying on it in a test environment.
What you need to automate Opera with Python
- Python 3.10 or newer, as listed by Selenium’s Python documentation.
- Selenium’s Python package, installed with
python -m pip install -U selenium. - Opera for desktop and a compatible OperaChromiumDriver executable. Opera’s OperaChromiumDriver project describes the driver as a WebDriver implementation adapted for Chromium-based Opera.
- The paths to the OperaDriver executable and, if the driver does not find it, the Opera browser executable.
The Opera desktop guide, whose latest commit shown is March 9, 2023, documents Selenium 4 setup but does not provide a reliable current compatibility matrix. Confirm your installed Opera/Chromium build, OperaDriver release, Selenium version, Python version, and operating system as a set. Do not report a combination as tested unless you have actually verified it.
Selenium says its Selenium Manager handles driver and browser management for most supported combinations. Opera is not among the browser-specific sections enumerated in Selenium’s Supported Browsers page, so follow Opera’s driver instructions rather than assuming Selenium Manager supplies OperaDriver support.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Install Selenium and identify the executables
- Install or update Selenium in the Python environment that will run your tests:
python -m pip install -U selenium. - Download an OperaChromiumDriver release appropriate to your Opera installation from the OperaChromiumDriver project. Check current release and browser compatibility information there before choosing a driver; the documentation cited here does not establish a current version pairing.
- Find the full path to the OperaDriver executable. On Windows, use the path to its executable file; on macOS or Linux, use the path to the downloaded driver binary and ensure it can be executed.
- Find Opera’s executable path too. You can pass it explicitly in Selenium options, as in the example below, or use the driver’s documented detection approach if Opera is installed where it can be found.
Use absolute paths while diagnosing setup problems. This avoids ambiguity about the working directory from which Python starts.
Start Opera and run a first Selenium test
This Selenium 4 example follows the construction pattern in Opera’s desktop guide. Replace both paths with paths on your machine. It is a documented example, not a claim that every current version pairing has been tested.
from selenium import webdriver
from selenium.webdriver.chrome import service
opera_driver_path = "/path/to/operadriver"
opera_binary_path = "/path/to/opera"
opera_service = service.Service(executable_path=opera_driver_path)
opera_service.start()
driver = None
try:
options = webdriver.ChromeOptions()
options.binary_location = opera_binary_path
options.add_experimental_option("w3c", True)
driver = webdriver.Remote(
command_executor=opera_service.service_url,
options=options,
)
driver.get("https://example.com")
print(driver.title)
finally:
if driver is not None:
driver.quit()
opera_service.stop()
The output should be the page title for https://example.com if the session starts and navigation succeeds. The finally block closes the WebDriver session and stops the locally started driver service even if navigation or an assertion fails.

Opera’s guide uses webdriver.Remote() with a locally started OperaDriver service and Selenium’s Chrome-derived options. Its documentation also includes a service port argument in a short example; configure a locally appropriate port if you need to reserve one, and avoid conflicts with other services. Selenium’s ordinary WebDriver operations then apply: navigate, locate elements, interact, assert expected state, and use explicit waits for asynchronous pages. Selenium describes WebDriver as driving a browser natively in its WebDriver overview.
Choose how OperaDriver finds or connects to Opera
The Opera desktop documentation describes three launch and connection approaches. They are configuration alternatives, not independently benchmarked methods.
| Approach | How it works | When to use it | Main consideration |
|---|---|---|---|
| Specify the Opera executable | Set options.binary_location to Opera’s full executable path. |
When you want the most explicit and reproducible local configuration. | The path must exist on the machine running the test. |
| Let OperaDriver detect Opera | Omit an explicit binary path and rely on the driver’s detection behavior. | When Opera is installed in a location the driver can detect. | Detection depends on the installation location and environment; set the path explicitly if startup fails. |
| Attach to an existing Opera instance | Start Opera with a remote-debugging port, then configure the corresponding debugger address capability. | When your workflow needs to connect to a browser instance that is already running. | This is distinct from letting OperaDriver launch the browser; Opera must first be started with the debugging option and the address must match. |
For the attach-to-running-browser workflow, consult the exact capability and launch syntax in Opera’s desktop guide. Do not combine those older capability examples indiscriminately with Selenium 4’s Options API.

Turn the first launch into a useful test
Once the browser session opens, structure a test around an observable outcome rather than a fixed pause. Use stable selectors and wait for asynchronous content before checking it.
from selenium.webdriver.common.by import By
from selenium.webdriver.support import expected_conditions as EC
from selenium.webdriver.support.ui import WebDriverWait
# After creating `driver` as in the previous example:
driver.get("https://example.com")
heading = WebDriverWait(driver, 10).until(
EC.visibility_of_element_located((By.TAG_NAME, "h1"))
)
assert heading.text.strip()
print("Visible heading:", heading.text)
This illustrates standard Selenium use after the Opera session exists. Choose a selector that represents the behavior your site promises; a generic heading check is only a smoke-test example. Keep session cleanup in the enclosing try/finally structure shown above.
Troubleshoot common Opera Selenium failures
Opera executable not found
Check that the path is the browser executable, not its containing folder, and that it is readable by the test process. Opera’s setup documentation identifies the binary option in operaOptions for installations the driver does not find automatically; in the Selenium 4 pattern above, set ChromeOptions.binary_location to the Opera executable.

The driver starts, but the browser session fails
Verify the OperaDriver path and executable permissions, then check compatibility between the Opera/Chromium build and OperaDriver release. The cited Opera documentation does not establish a dependable current version matrix, so a successful driver-service start alone does not prove the browser session can launch.
An old code sample fails with Selenium 4
Use the Selenium 4 desktop construction pattern: create the service, create webdriver.ChromeOptions(), and connect through webdriver.Remote(). Opera’s setup page separates legacy Selenium 2/3 examples from its Selenium 4 route; avoid mixing their capability syntax.
You expected Selenium Manager to download OperaDriver
Selenium describes Manager support for most supported browser combinations, not every browser. Opera is absent from the browser-specific list on Selenium’s Supported Browsers page. Use Opera’s own driver project unless current authoritative documentation confirms a different supported path.

You need to connect to an already-running Opera window
Launching with the remote-debugging port is required for the attach workflow. Configure the matching debugger address in the capabilities as described by Opera’s desktop guide. This is not the same as setting binary_location for a browser OperaDriver launches itself.
Opera testing scope: desktop and Android
This guide focuses on desktop Chromium-based Opera because Opera’s desktop documentation provides the clearest Selenium 4 setup path. The OperaChromiumDriver repository also includes Android/Appium material, but the setup notes available here do not verify present-day Android compatibility. Treat Android automation as a separate configuration task and re-check the current Opera, Appium, driver, and platform documentation before relying on it.

If your goal is to capture a page rather than interactively test it in Opera, ScreenshotNeo offers a one-request screenshot or PDF API. It is not a replacement for Selenium interaction tests. Its API can remove cookie/consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; only clean shots are billed, while bot checks, blank pages, failed loads, timeouts, and cache hits cost nothing. It also provides an MCP server for AI agents, and the free plan includes 1,000 shots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000.
