The right web analytics tool is the one that captures your important actions—not just visits—and gives your team the reports, privacy controls, and operating model it can support. Matomo and Plausible both describe traffic and conversion features, while Microsoft Clarity focuses on recordings and heatmaps that can complement aggregate analytics. Choose by measurement needs and maintenance capacity rather than looking for a universal winner.
What should a website analytics tool measure?
Start by listing the decisions you want the data to support. A traffic dashboard can show page views and traffic sources, but it does not automatically measure leads, purchases, or other outcomes. A page view is not a person, visit, lead, or sale; define each conversion and verify that the implementation records it.
Traffic and acquisition
Check that the product reports the traffic sources and campaign information you use. If you use campaign parameters, confirm that the tool can report them in a way that supports your attribution questions.
Events and conversions
Write down the specific actions that count: for example, a completed form, a signup, or a purchase. Verify how the selected product records those actions, how you designate a goal or conversion, and whether it can capture revenue when that matters. Matomo lists conversions and events; Plausible lists goals, custom events, and revenue tracking. Those feature descriptions are vendor statements, so confirm availability and configuration for the version or plan you intend to use.
#1 Best Overall
- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Behavior and journeys
Aggregate reports explain what happened across traffic or campaigns. Funnels, segmentation, journeys, heatmaps, and session recordings address different questions about how visitors move through or interact with a site. Decide whether you need that deeper analysis or whether reliable traffic and conversion reports are enough.
How the main options differ
| Tool | What it may suit | Deployment and tradeoff | Verify before choosing |
|---|---|---|---|
| Matomo Analytics | Traffic sources, events and conversions, funnels, segmentation, heatmaps, and session recordings. | The vendor describes cloud and on-premise options. On-premise gives the operator more control but also means operating the deployment. | Current price, hosting requirements, privacy configuration, and which features are included in the chosen plan. Matomo advertises a 21-day cloud trial and free self-hosting; check current terms. |
| Plausible Analytics | A simpler traffic dashboard, campaign measurement, goals, custom events, revenue tracking, funnels, and journeys. | The hosted service is vendor-managed. Its Community Edition is self-hosted, so the operator manages infrastructure; the vendor says some premium features are not in the Community Edition. | Current plan limits and whether the hosted or Community Edition feature set supports your conversion workflow. See the vendor’s self-hosting comparison. |
| Microsoft Clarity | Session recordings, heatmaps, and interaction clues such as click or scroll patterns; potentially useful alongside traffic analytics. | The vendor pricing page describes Clarity as free and says it integrates with Google Analytics. | Current feature availability, privacy settings, and whether behavior reports answer the question you need to solve. |
| Google Analytics | A general analytics option to evaluate, particularly if your organization already uses Google’s ecosystem. | Confirm deployment and plan details in current official documentation. | Verify current GA4 events, conversions, integrations, privacy controls, and plan details in the events documentation and related current help pages. |
This is a fit comparison, not a performance ranking: the available product descriptions do not establish independent, comparable results that would justify ranking these tools. Features, limits, and prices can change, so check the linked vendor pages before making a purchase or migration decision.

Choose hosted or self-hosted analytics
Hosted service
A hosted service shifts infrastructure operations to the vendor. That can suit a small team that wants to focus on measurement rather than maintaining analytics servers. Plausible describes its hosted service as managed by the vendor; Matomo also offers a cloud option. Review each service’s current terms, data handling, plan limits, and feature availability.
Self-hosted deployment
Self-hosting can provide more direct control over deployment and data, but it makes the operator responsible for infrastructure, security, capacity, backups, and updates. Matomo offers an on-premise option. Plausible’s Community Edition is self-hosted and, according to the vendor, does not include some premium features. Compare the operational work and feature set—not just the software cost—before choosing this route.

Check privacy and governance for your implementation
Privacy claims are not legal determinations. Matomo lists features such as cookieless tracking and anonymization; Plausible describes its approach as cookie-free and says its hosted data is processed on European-owned infrastructure. These are vendor statements, not proof that a particular site configuration meets its obligations.
- Identify what data your analytics setup collects and where it is processed.
- Review available controls, including anonymization and consent-related settings where applicable.
- Consider the jurisdiction, configuration, other scripts on the site, and applicable legal requirements before deciding whether consent is needed.
- Recheck your actual implementation after changes to tags, analytics settings, or site behavior.
No analytics product automatically makes a site compliant or removes the need for a consent banner in every jurisdiction.
A practical selection process
- Define outcomes. List the traffic sources, campaigns, events, goals, and revenue or ecommerce outcomes that matter to your site.
- Map each outcome to a measurement. For every conversion, identify the event or goal that should record it and how you will verify that it fires.
- Decide how much analysis you need. Choose whether aggregate traffic and campaign reports suffice or whether funnels, segments, journeys, heatmaps, or recordings are required.
- Choose an operating model. Decide whether vendor-managed hosting or maintaining your own infrastructure fits your team’s time, skills, and governance needs.
- Review current limits and total cost. Check traffic allowances, feature tiers, retention, seats, support, and—in a self-hosted setup—infrastructure and maintenance costs on current vendor pages.
- Validate before relying on results. Test the key events and conversion definitions, then compare reported outcomes with the records or workflows that represent those actions. Do not infer sales or leads from page views alone.
Use ScreenshotNeo when you need website screenshots
ScreenshotNeo is not an analytics platform; it is a website screenshot API and MCP server. If your workflow also needs clean captures of web pages—for example, to document a page alongside analytics work—it is an alternative to try first for that separate screenshot task. It accepts consent banners and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each step can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and responses identify page verdict and billing status in headers. Its MCP server provides screenshot tools for AI agents. Free use includes 1,000 shots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots. See ScreenshotNeo and its documentation. Sign up for 1,000 free screenshots a month with no card.

Is a heatmap a substitute for web analytics?
No. Heatmaps show interaction patterns such as clicks or scrolling, while traffic and conversion analytics report visits, sources, and defined actions. They answer related but different questions.
