There is no single best PHP testing framework for every web application. PHPUnit is a strong conventional test runner; Pest adds a more descriptive style on top of PHPUnit; Codeception coordinates unit, functional, and acceptance suites; and Behat is designed for readable behavior scenarios. Choose according to the testing layer you need, your team’s preferred syntax, PHP version, and any browser-automation setup—not an unsupported popularity ranking.

Quick comparison

Framework Best fit Test authoring and scope Key consideration
PHPUnit Conventional PHP test suites and a direct test-runner workflow Assertion-based test cases; documentation covers organization, fixtures, test doubles, command-line selection, reporting, and coverage Code-coverage collection requires an enabled extension such as PCOV or Xdebug
Pest Teams that want concise, descriptive tests while retaining PHPUnit capabilities Expectation syntax using constructs such as test(), it(), and expect(); built on PHPUnit Current installation documentation requires PHP 8.4 or later; browser testing adds Playwright setup
Codeception Teams coordinating unit, functional, and acceptance testing in one framework Cest tests, actor-style actions, modules, and optional Gherkin support Its suites, modules, and configuration add concepts to learn
Behat Teams that need behavior specifications readable by technical and non-technical collaborators Gherkin scenarios can drive behavior across browser, HTTP, shell, database, filesystem, or PHP interactions It is not necessarily a replacement for a lower-level unit-test runner

How to choose for your application

Start with the test scope

For isolated classes and conventional PHP tests, begin with PHPUnit or Pest. For application-level functional tests and acceptance flows coordinated through one suite model, consider Codeception. When the main goal is to express agreed product behavior in readable scenarios across application layers, consider Behat. These tools can coexist if each has a distinct role; avoid maintaining overlapping runners without a clear reason.

Match the syntax to the team

  • PHPUnit: choose assertion-based test cases and a direct test-runner workflow.
  • Pest: choose its descriptive expectation syntax when it makes tests easier for your team to read. It retains PHPUnit configuration and assertion APIs.
  • Codeception: choose actor/actions and suite organization when the module-based workflow fits how you structure application tests.
  • Behat: choose Gherkin scenarios when behavior descriptions are useful as shared specifications, not just another syntax for developers.

Decide how much application behavior to expose

Tests that call application internals can be concise but are more coupled to implementation. HTTP or browser-driven tests exercise more of the public behavior and typically involve more setup. Behat supports mixing browser automation, HTTP API calls, shell commands, database and filesystem access, or direct PHP interactions. Codeception’s acceptance examples use browser-style actions against a configured application URL. Choose the boundary that catches the failures you care about without making the whole suite unnecessarily slow or fragile.

What each framework offers

PHPUnit: the conventional baseline

PHPUnit’s manual covers test organization, XML configuration, fixtures, test doubles, outcomes, command-line selection and reporting, flaky and risky tests, code coverage, and assertions. It is a sensible starting point if your team wants a direct PHP test runner with a broad documented feature set. See the PHPUnit 13.4 manual; that manual states it was updated October 2, 2026.

The PHPUnit installation guide describes PHAR and Composer installation. Coverage collection is not automatic: the guide lists PCOV or Xdebug as extensions to install and enable.

Pest: PHPUnit capabilities with an expectation-focused style

Pest is built on PHPUnit, and its documentation says PHPUnit configuration and assertion APIs remain usable. Its writing-tests guide describes tests using test(), it(), expect(), and descriptive phrases. This makes it a candidate for teams that prefer concise test descriptions without giving up PHPUnit-based capabilities.

The current Pest installation documentation requires PHP 8.4 or later and installs Pest as a Composer development dependency. Check the documentation and release constraints for the Pest version you intend to use; the current docs navigation lists Pest 5.

Codeception: suite and module coordination

Codeception 5 documentation describes generated Unit, Functional, and Acceptance suites. Tests use a Cest format and module-based actions; the official guide demonstrates browser-style acceptance actions against a configured application URL and also documents Gherkin support. Its repository describes Codeception as a full-stack PHP testing framework that can run classic PHPUnit tests. Choose it when one framework coordinating several test levels and integrations outweighs the learning cost of its configuration, suites, and modules. See the Codeception documentation.

Behat: readable behavior scenarios

Behat executes plain-language behavior specifications and can be used with any PHP framework or without one. Its documentation describes combining browser automation, HTTP API calls, shell commands, database or filesystem access, and direct PHP interactions; extensions add framework integrations, browser automation, reporters, and fixtures. It is most compelling when the scenarios themselves provide value as shared descriptions of expected behavior. It need not replace a unit-test runner for lower-level code tests. See the Behat documentation.

Check PHP compatibility before choosing

Runtime compatibility is release-specific. Pest’s current installation documentation requires PHP 8.4 or later, so projects on PHP 8.2 or 8.3 should not assume that the latest Pest release is available to them; check the constraints for the particular release or plan a PHP upgrade. PHP.net lists PHP 8.2, 8.3, 8.4, and 8.5 as supported branches on the date checked, and its policy provides two years of active support followed by two years of security-only support. See PHP’s supported versions and support policy.

Do not assume one minimum PHP version applies to every current release of PHPUnit, Codeception, or Behat. Verify the exact release requirements against your deployed PHP line before adding a dependency.

Account for browser testing setup

Browser-level tests need more than the PHP test runner. Pest’s browser documentation describes installing pest-plugin-browser through Composer and installing Playwright with npm. It also shows browser choice and viewport or device configuration, and recommends parallel execution as an option. This is a separate setup burden from ordinary unit or feature tests. See Pest browser testing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Codeception and Behat also document browser-related integrations or extensions. Compare the setup, reporting, and CI requirements for the specific integration you intend to use rather than treating “supports browser tests” as a complete setup plan.

A practical selection path

  1. Write down the coverage gap. Decide whether you need isolated unit tests, framework-level functional tests, acceptance flows, or shared behavior specifications.
  2. Check the runtime floor. Compare your deployed PHP version with the exact release constraints of each candidate, especially Pest’s documented PHP 8.4 minimum.
  3. Try the team’s preferred authoring style. Compare assertion-based cases, Pest expectations, Codeception actor/actions, or Behat scenarios against a representative feature.
  4. Include CI setup in the decision. For coverage, plan for PCOV or Xdebug with PHPUnit. For Pest browser testing, account for Playwright installation and execution.
  5. Keep tools only when their roles differ. A PHPUnit baseline plus Behat for shared behavior scenarios can make sense; two runners doing the same work usually add maintenance without a clear benefit.

Or skip the browser setup

For a screenshot of a web page, ScreenshotNeo is a separate screenshot API and MCP server—not a PHP testing framework. Its one-request API is useful when you need an image or PDF capture in an application workflow without wiring up a browser harness yourself. The API accepts the same parameter names used by other screenshot APIs, which can make switching easier.

See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation. This cURL request captures the specified URL as WebP:

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie or consent banners before capture and removes 60+ known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each step can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and response headers identify the page verdict and whether it was billed. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients. The free plan includes 1,000 shots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which PHP testing framework is most used for end-to-end tests?

The sources cited here do not establish comparative adoption or usage figures, so they do not support naming a most-used framework.

Can Pest and PHPUnit be used together?

Pest is built on PHPUnit and retains its configuration and assertion APIs, so teams can use PHPUnit-based capabilities through Pest rather than treating them as wholly separate testing stacks.
