In an existing Protractor test, save the current window handle, trigger the action that opens another window or tab, wait for its handle to appear, switch to it, and switch back to the saved handle when finished. WebDriver does not automatically change the test’s selected window just because the browser visibly focused a new one. Protractor reached end of life in August 2023, so treat this as legacy-suite maintenance guidance, not a recommendation for new projects.
Switch windows by handle, not by browser focus
A window handle identifies a top-level browser context, including a tab or popup. The reliable sequence is:
- Save the current handle and take a snapshot of all handles before the click.
- Trigger the link or control that opens the new context.
- Wait until the handle list grows.
- Find the handle that was not in the original snapshot and switch to it.
- After closing the child context, switch explicitly back to the still-open parent.
This wait matters because popup creation is asynchronous. Selecting by a fixed position such as handles[1] can target the wrong tab when the browser already has other contexts open. Selenium’s window-handling guide documents waiting for and switching between contexts.
Protractor example: open, use, and return
This illustrates a modern async/await style for a Protractor test. Adapt it to the promise style and versions pinned in your legacy project; it has not been verified against every historical Protractor/Selenium combination.

});The Selenium JavaScript API describes getWindowHandle() as retrieving the current handle and getAllWindowHandles() as returning a promise that resolves to an array of available handles. This example compares against the full pre-click snapshot, so it still identifies the newly opened context if more than one window existed beforehand.
Keep cleanup safe
If an assertion can fail before the child is closed, put cleanup in a finally path in your suite so the test attempts to return to an open context. Do not issue more commands to a context after closing it: Selenium warns that doing so can raise a No Such Window error. If a test intentionally leaves the child open, switch back to the saved parent before continuing.

Troubleshooting window-switching failures
- The popup is not available immediately: wait for the handle count to increase before reading the list; do not assume the click and new-context creation complete at the same instant.
- The test keeps interacting with the original page: call
switchTo().window(child)after identifying the new handle. Visual focus does not select the WebDriver context. - A command throws No Such Window: the selected context may have been closed. Switch to a handle that remains open, usually the saved parent.
- The test sometimes chooses the wrong tab: compare current handles with the entire pre-action snapshot rather than relying on a fixed array index.
- The syntax fails in an old suite: inspect the pinned Protractor, Selenium, browser, and driver versions. Legacy projects may use promise chains or the older WebDriver control flow, and syntax compatibility depends on that stack.
- No new handle appears before the wait expires: confirm the click actually opens a top-level tab or popup. An in-page route change or content rendered inside the existing page does not create a new window handle.
What Protractor’s end-of-life means for this code
The official Protractor project site states that Protractor reached end of life in August 2023 and discourages new adoption, recommending that existing users migrate to other end-to-end testing solutions. Selenium’s current window documentation can explain the WebDriver operation, but it does not restore support for the discontinued Protractor framework. For a new suite, choose a maintained framework and verify its current multiple-context API; the relevant decision points are maintenance status, compatibility with your application and test stack, asynchronous wait behavior, and migration effort.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does Selenium automatically switch to a popup when it opens?
No. The test must select the popup’s window handle explicitly.
Can the example be copied into any Protractor version?
Not necessarily. Check the versions pinned by your legacy project and adapt async or promise handling to that stack.
