Recognize which kind of dialog Selenium can handle
Selenium’s documentation describes an API for the three native popup messages offered by JavaScript: alerts, confirmations, and prompts. These are browser dialogs, not HTML elements in the page. A custom modal or overlay that merely looks like a popup is page content; interact with its elements using normal WebDriver element methods instead. Handle a native alert in Java
Use driver.switchTo().alert() to obtain an Alert reference. The following reads the message and accepts the dialog:
Alert alert = driver.switchTo().alert();
String message = alert.getText();
alert.accept();Assuming driver is your existing WebDriver instance and the Selenium Java Alert type is available, these are the core operations. To cancel or close the dialog instead, call alert.dismiss(). See the Selenium Java Alert API.

Accept or dismiss a confirmation
Choose the action that matches the case under test:
Alert confirmation = driver.switchTo().alert();
confirmation.accept(); // choose the affirmative actionFor the cancel path, use confirmation.dismiss() instead. A useful test checks the page’s resulting state after this action; the alert operation itself only selects the dialog outcome.

Enter a response in a prompt
Prompts accept text. Send the response before accepting:
Alert prompt = driver.switchTo().alert();
prompt.sendKeys("response");
prompt.accept();Use prompt.dismiss() to cancel rather than submit the response. Do not call sendKeys() on an alert or confirmation: JavaScript’s Selenium API documents an error for that operation on those dialog types (JavaScript Alert API).

The dialog behavior is the same across bindings, but the syntax differs. These examples show the alert operations; use the corresponding accept, dismiss, or prompt-input action according to the case you are testing.

In Python, import and use Selenium’s Alert class; its documented API uses .text and .send_keys() (Python Alert API). The Java and JavaScript APIs use the camel-case method names shown above.

Timing, missing alerts, and unhandled prompts
The alert API applies when a native dialog is present. If it is not present when your code switches to it, Selenium cannot provide that dialog’s text or accept/dismiss it. The cited alert guidance establishes the operations, but does not establish a universal timing recipe or browser-and-driver compatibility matrix; behavior can depend on the specific browser and driver versions in use.
For beforeunload prompts, current Selenium documentation says recent drivers automatically dismiss them by default. It points to the unhandledPromptBehavior setting for users who need the older behavior. Consult the alert guide for the relevant setup rather than assuming every browser and driver behaves identically.

Troubleshoot common alert-handling errors
- The page has a popup, but
switchTo().alert()does not address it: check whether it is an HTML modal or page overlay. Selenium’s alert interface is for native JavaScript dialogs only; use regular element location and interaction for page content. - The prompt response operation fails: confirm the dialog is a prompt. Only prompts provide text input; alerts and confirmations are not valid targets for
sendKeys(). - The test chooses the wrong result: use
accept()for the affirmative action anddismiss()for cancellation. For a prompt, enter text before accepting if the test requires a submitted response. - A
beforeunloadprompt is dismissed unexpectedly: Selenium says recent drivers dismiss these automatically by default. ReviewunhandledPromptBehaviorand the exact browser/driver combination if the test requires older behavior.
