Allure Report and ExtentReports are the two reporting layers to compare first for Selenium teams. Allure is a strong fit when you need structured results, attachments, and cross-run analysis; ExtentReports suits teams that want to compose logs, screenshots, and metadata through a logger-style library. Neither is universally best: confirm support for your exact language, test runner, and version before adopting one. Selenium Grid is execution infrastructure, not a reporting tool.
How to choose a Selenium reporting tool
Choose based on the work you need the report to do after a WebDriver test runs. Check the integration for your language and runner, the failure evidence it can preserve, how reports are generated and published, and whether you need history across runs or a centralized service.
- Language and runner: Confirm a maintained adapter for your specific combination. “Works with Selenium” alone is not enough.
- Failure diagnosis: Decide whether you need steps, stack traces, screenshots, browser logs, network events, or custom metadata.
- History: Distinguish a report for one run from comparisons across launches and environments.
- Delivery: Plan where result files and generated reports live, how CI publishes them, and how long artifacts are retained.
- Governance: Check the current license, edition boundaries, and procurement terms for the exact version and reporter you intend to use.
Allure Report: structured results and history
Allure describes itself as an open-source, framework-agnostic test-result visualization tool. Its documented workflow separates collecting test results from rendering them: a test framework writes result files, and the Allure utility reads those files to create an interactive HTML report. You can generate reports locally or publish them through a web server or a documented CI integration. This separation is useful when tests execute on multiple workers and report generation should happen after their results are collected.
Diagnostics and analytics
Allure’s documented report features include steps, attachments, filters, timelines, and analytics. Its result data can include stack traces and runtime information. The file-based model can combine results from parallel nodes when those result files are brought together before report generation; ensure the CI workflow actually collects and retains every worker’s results.

Allure 2 documents history comparisons, investigation of unstable tests, categories, and timelines. Allure 3 adds a different set of capabilities, including rerun grouping, multiple environments, live updates, quality-gate settings, and built-in storage. These are version-specific distinctions, not a guarantee that every integration or workflow works identically across both major versions.
Allure 2 or Allure 3?
| Version | Documented positioning | Check before choosing |
|---|---|---|
| Allure 2 | Mature option with the broadest range of integrations, according to Allure’s documentation. | Verify that the framework adapter and CI or IDE integration you need are supported for the version you plan to deploy. |
| Allure 3 | Rebuilt TypeScript application with rerun grouping, multiple environments, live updates, quality gates, and Allure Storage Service. | Do not assume Allure 2 integrations have feature parity. The integration guide marks some integrations as version-specific. |
Java Selenium browser logs and network events
For qualifying Java setups, Allure’s Selenium BiDi integration can attach browser log and network events from Selenium WebDriver 4 to test results. The documentation states Java 17 or later and validation against Selenium Java 4.44; it also lists compatibility with Allure Java integrations including JUnit Jupiter and TestNG. Treat those as documented compatibility details, and recheck the current integration documentation when setting up a project.

CI and centralized management
The Allure integration list includes Azure DevOps, GitHub Actions (Allure 3), Jenkins, TeamCity (Allure 2), Maven, and Gradle, with version qualifications. Check the current integration page for your exact combination instead of treating that list as interchangeable across versions.
A local Allure report does not require Allure TestOps. Allure identifies TestOps as a paid option for centralized test-result management, including manual and automated case tracking and analysis across launches and projects. Consider it only if local reports and your existing CI artifact workflow do not meet that need; verify current terms and capabilities directly.

ExtentReports: build report content in the logging flow
ExtentReports describes itself as a logger-style reporting library for automated tests. Its official materials describe reports containing events, screenshots, tags, devices, and authors, with customizable templates and multiple destinations. This approach may suit a team that wants to record report content directly as tests run and control the presentation or output destination.
Check the major version and reporter
Examples for older versions can be misleading. ExtentReports v5 Java documentation says ExtentHtmlReporter and ExtentLoggerReporter were removed and identifies ExtentSparkReporter as the replacement. The version 4 documentation describes differences between community and professional functionality, including reporter availability. Before copying a snippet, verify its language binding, major version, reporter name, edition, and license against the official documentation for your project.

History and reporting boundaries
Extent’s site describes real-time analytics and report customization. The official materials cited here do not establish a feature-for-feature equivalent to Allure’s documented long-term history comparisons. If cross-run trends or launch-level analysis are essential, test that specific workflow and distinguish what the generated report provides from any separate service or storage you would need.

Where Selenium Grid fits
Selenium Grid routes WebDriver commands to remote browser instances. Selenium documents it as a way to run scripts across machines, browsers, versions, and platforms, including in parallel. Grid runs browser sessions; a reporting library records, formats, and presents outcomes. A team can use Grid with either Allure or ExtentReports, but Grid is not a competing report generator.

A practical selection and rollout checklist
- List the actual stack: Record language, Selenium version, test runner, build tool, CI provider, and whether tests run in parallel.
- Verify the integration: Check the official integration documentation for the chosen major version and confirm it supports that stack.
- Define the failure record: Decide which steps, screenshots, logs, network events, environment details, and attachments are necessary to diagnose a failed test.
- Test a known failure: Deliberately produce a representative failure and confirm the report includes the evidence you expect, not just a pass/fail status.
- Exercise parallel collection: If tests run on multiple workers, verify that each worker’s results reach report generation and that the resulting report contains them.
- Try the publication path: Generate locally, then test the CI artifact or publishing integration your team will actually use. Check access controls and retention.
- Review version and licensing: Pin the intended versions and verify current edition and license terms before standardizing.
Or skip the browser setup
ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server, rather than a Selenium test reporting framework. It can help when a test workflow needs a screenshot of a page without setting up browser capture: consent banners are accepted and more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets are removed before capture; each step can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and responses identify page verdict and billing status in headers. AI agents can use its MCP server tools, including take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf.
One GET request returns an image or PDF. The example below saves a WebP screenshot:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for parameters and setup. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000. Sign up for ScreenshotNeo free.
Common setup problems
- The report is empty or missing tests: Check that the test adapter writes result files and that the report command reads the correct directory. In a parallel job, collect results from every worker before generating the report.
- A CI integration does not work with the selected Allure version: Check the integration guide’s version label. The documented integration set differs between Allure 2 and Allure 3.
- A Java Selenium report lacks browser logs or network events: Confirm that the Selenium BiDi integration is configured and that the environment meets its stated Java and Selenium compatibility requirements.
- An ExtentReports example fails to compile: Check whether it targets v4 or v5. In v5 Java, use the documented ExtentSparkReporter rather than removed reporter classes.
- Screenshots or attachments are absent: Verify that the test code records them, the output files remain available through report generation, and CI retains or publishes the relevant artifacts.
- The report works locally but not in CI: Compare the local and CI result paths, permissions, dependency versions, and publication step; confirm the generated output is included in the CI artifact.
