Then add stable Google Chrome or Microsoft Edge, particular operating systems, and real-device checks when your users, support policy, or test goals require them. Playwright lets you configure these browser projects through one automation API; a hosted grid such as BrowserStack can extend coverage when local machines are not enough.
Start with browser engines, not browser names
A browser engine is the software responsible for much of a page’s rendering and behavior. Testing multiple browsers that share an engine does not provide the same coverage as testing across different engines.

Playwright supports projects for Chromium, Firefox, WebKit, Chrome, and Edge. Microsoft Learn describes its approach this way: “The Playwright library provides cross-browser automation through a single API.” That describes Playwright’s automation interface; it is not a claim that every browser behaves identically.
When to test Chrome or Edge in addition to Chromium
Playwright’s bundled Chromium is not necessarily the same build as the stable Google Chrome or Microsoft Edge release available to users. Its Chromium build can be ahead of those stable releases, which can help uncover changes that may reach users later. For a release regression against the branded browser people use now, configure a stable Chrome or Edge channel as well as, or instead of, relying only on bundled Chromium.

Use official Chrome or Edge binaries when the test specifically depends on branded-browser behavior or media codecs. The right choice depends on the question the test must answer: an engine-level baseline, upcoming changes, or compatibility with a particular stable browser release.
Choose operating systems and devices from your support needs
Browser engine coverage and platform coverage are separate axes. Playwright projects can also emulate tablet and mobile devices, letting you exercise responsive layouts and device-specific settings in an automated configuration.

Emulation is not evidence that a site has been validated on every physical device. The sources cited here establish that Playwright supports emulated devices, not that emulation replaces real-device testing. Use actual supported customer devices for validation when hardware-specific behavior matters, such as touch interaction, device integrations, or a reported issue that only occurs on a particular phone.
- Include desktop operating systems your product officially supports or your users materially rely on.
- Add mobile or tablet emulation for responsive and device-configured checks.
- Use real-device validation when your product requirements call for evidence on physical hardware.
- Avoid multiplying every browser, version, operating system, and form factor unless the added combinations answer a real support or risk question.
Build a useful test matrix
Keep the matrix small enough to run and maintain, but broad enough to reflect the product’s actual support commitments. Decide each dimension explicitly:

Run the matrix with Playwright
Playwright’s project configuration is the place to define which browser targets your tests run against. A compact configuration can cover the three engine families; add branded browser projects only when they serve a stated test need.
For broader browser, version, and operating-system combinations than are practical to maintain locally, BrowserStack documents hosted Playwright support and lists supported browser and OS combinations. Choose a hosted grid when that expanded matrix is needed; the available evidence does not establish a price comparison or show that one hosted provider is best for every team.
