Selenium Expected Conditions let a test wait for a specific browser state—such as an element becoming visible—instead of pausing for an arbitrary number of seconds. In Python, pair a condition with WebDriverWait and until(); Selenium keeps checking until the condition succeeds or the timeout expires.
How Expected Conditions work
An Expected Condition is a check of browser state. An explicit wait evaluates that check repeatedly until it returns a successful value or the timeout is reached. The condition is not a sleep and does not make progress happen; it observes whether the page has reached the state your test needs.
This Python example waits for an element with the ID revealed to become visible, then uses the returned element:
from selenium.webdriver.common.by import By
from selenium.webdriver.support import expected_conditions as EC
from selenium.webdriver.support.wait import WebDriverWait
wait = WebDriverWait(driver, timeout=10)
revealed = wait.until(
EC.visibility_of_element_located((By.ID, "revealed"))
)
revealed.send_keys("Ready")
The timeout of 10 seconds is an illustrative value from the Python API reference, not a universal recommendation. Choose a limit appropriate to the operation and test environment. Selenium’s guide demonstrates the same basic approach: trigger an action, wait for the resulting state, then interact with the element. Selenium: Waiting with Expected Conditions

What until() returns
until() returns the condition’s successful result, which is not always a Boolean. Element-based conditions commonly return a WebElement; text checks commonly return True. Use the result directly when it is an element. until_not() waits until the condition returns a falsey result.
Choose the condition that matches the state you need
| Test need | Python condition | What success means |
|---|---|---|
| Wait until an element is attached to the DOM | presence_of_element_located(locator) |
The element exists in the DOM; it may still be hidden. |
| Wait until an element can be seen | visibility_of_element_located(locator) |
The element is displayed and has nonzero dimensions. Returns the element. |
| Wait for at least one matching element to be visible | visibility_of_any_elements_located(locator) |
At least one match is visible. |
| Wait for all matching elements | presence_of_all_elements_located(locator) or visibility_of_all_elements_located(locator) |
All matches are present or all are visible, respectively. |
| Wait for text in an element | text_to_be_present_in_element(locator, text) |
The specified text appears in the element’s displayed text. |
| Wait until an element is ready for a click attempt | element_to_be_clickable(locator) |
The element is visible and enabled. This does not guarantee the application action will succeed. |
| Wait for a loading element to disappear | invisibility_of_element_located(locator) |
The element is hidden or absent; a stale reference also counts as no longer visible. |
| Wait for an old element to be detached after a rerender | staleness_of(element) |
That particular element is no longer attached to the DOM. |
| Wait until a frame is available and enter it | frame_to_be_available_and_switch_to_it(locator) |
The condition switches the driver into the frame on success. |
| Wait for an alert | alert_is_present() |
An alert is present; the condition returns and switches to it. |
| Wait for a new window | new_window_is_opened(current_handles) |
The number of window handles increases. |
| Wait for a title or URL | title_is(title), title_contains(text), url_to_be(url), or url_contains(text) |
Use equality for an exact match or a contains condition for a substring. |

Use a locator or an existing WebElement?
A locator-based condition can look up the element again on each polling attempt. This is generally useful when a page may replace an element during a rerender. A condition that takes a WebElement checks that particular object instead; if the page detaches it, stale-element behavior may matter.

For example, visibility_of_element_located((By.ID, "save")) uses a locator, while visibility_of(save_button) checks an element you already found. Use the locator form when the wait should find the current matching element; use the element form when the specific existing element is what matters. The Python API documents both forms for some visibility, invisibility, and selection checks, but not for every condition.
Combine conditions or write a focused predicate
The Python API includes combinators for cases where one condition is not enough:
all_of(condition_a, condition_b)succeeds when all supplied conditions succeed and returns their successful results.any_of(condition_a, condition_b)succeeds when any supplied condition succeeds and returns the first successful result.none_of(condition_a, condition_b)succeeds when none of the supplied conditions holds.
A custom function or lambda can express a state check that has no built-in condition. Keep it focused on reading browser state: explicit waits may call the predicate many times, so a predicate that changes the application state can produce unexpected side effects. Selenium’s Java API specifically warns about side effects in repeatedly evaluated conditions. Selenium Java ExpectedCondition API

Timeouts, polling, and implicit-wait pitfalls
The Python WebDriverWait reference documents the signature WebDriverWait(driver, timeout, poll_frequency=0.5, ignored_exceptions=None). The timeout is in seconds; the default polling interval is half a second, and NoSuchElementException is ignored by default. Other exceptions generally propagate unless configured to be ignored. A successful truthy result ends the wait; reaching the timeout raises TimeoutException. Selenium Python WebDriverWait API
Avoid mixing implicit and explicit waits. Selenium warns that combining them can make the actual timeout unpredictable because element lookups inside an explicit wait may also be affected by the implicit timeout. Prefer a clearly defined explicit wait for the state under test and set timeout values deliberately. Selenium: Waiting Strategies
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteLanguage support differs by Selenium binding
Expected Conditions examples are binding-specific; Python imports and condition names are not cross-language syntax. Selenium’s guide says .NET stopped supporting Expected Conditions in Selenium 4 to reduce maintenance and redundancy. It notes that Ruby commonly uses blocks, procs, and lambdas. Troubleshoot a wait that fails
TimeoutExceptioneven though the page loaded: Check that the condition describes the state the page actually reaches. DOM presence does not imply visibility, and visibility does not mean an element is enabled. Verify the locator and the state in the browser before increasing the timeout.- The element appears but the click does not work:
element_to_be_clickablechecks visibility and enabled state; it does not establish that an overlay, application logic, or a later action will allow the click to succeed. Inspect the page state and choose a condition that reflects the prerequisite your test needs. - A stale-element error occurs during a rerender: If the page replaces the node, a stored
WebElementrefers to the old object. Prefer a locator-based condition when the wait should re-find the current element, or usestaleness_of(old_element)when detachment is the expected transition. - The wait takes longer than expected: Check whether an implicit wait is also configured. Selenium warns that combining it with explicit waits can yield unpredictable timing.
- A condition name or import is unavailable: Confirm the programming-language binding and Selenium version. The Python API inventory does not apply automatically to .NET or Ruby.
