To track Amazon prices automatically, first decide what you need to observe: seller-facing offer signals, a third-party history of marketplace offers, a shopper’s recent price history, or rule-based changes to your own offer. Amazon’s Selling Partner API (SP-API) and Keepa can support automated monitoring in different ways; Amazon’s price-history feature is a quick viewing aid, while Automate Pricing changes your own prices rather than providing a broad competitor-history database.
Choose the data source that fits the decision
| Need | Starting point | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Current offer and competitive signals to inform your own seller pricing | Amazon SP-API Product Pricing API | Seller eligibility, required role, marketplace access, ASIN or SKU coverage, signal definitions, and integration work. |
| Price history, alerts, and offer attributes across selected products | Keepa marketplace offer data and tracking and alert configuration | Marketplace coverage, history completeness and freshness, offer selection, API limits and price, notification delivery, and permitted use. |
| A quick view of recent movement on a product | Amazon’s price-history feature | Whether the feature and required time period are available in your marketplace and on the product page. |
| Rule-based repricing of your own Amazon offer | Amazon Automate Pricing | Professional selling-plan eligibility, price limits, rule behavior, and performance outcomes. |
These routes are not interchangeable. SP-API returns defined seller-facing pricing and offer signals; a third-party tracker can assemble observations over time; Amazon’s customer feature displays price history; Automate Pricing executes rules against your own offer.
Define exactly what “price” means
Before you build a monitor, specify the product and the comparison unit. An ASIN identifies a catalog product, but a competitive decision may concern a particular seller’s offer or the SKU you sell. Record the marketplace and currency, product variant and pack size, condition, fulfillment method, shipping, coupons, and stock status. A headline price that excludes shipping or reflects a different bundle may not be comparable.
Amazon’s competitive-price signals can normalize unit prices across pack sizes and may use near-identical products as comparables. That can make a signal useful for pricing decisions, but it also means it is not necessarily a literal match to one specific competitor offer. Keepa’s offer data distinguishes details such as seller, condition, fulfillment, Prime status, price, shipping, stock, coupons, and histories; select the fields that match your decision.

Use Amazon SP-API for seller-facing competitive signals
Amazon lists Product Pricing API version v2022-05-01 as current in its documentation and marks availability as sellers only. Its documented competitive-summary and Featured Offer Expected Price operations require the Pricing role. Check the role, marketplace, and operation requirements in the Product Pricing API documentation before designing an integration.
The API provides defined fields rather than unrestricted access to every competitor’s complete price history. Amazon documents Competitive Price Threshold, Featured Offer Price, and Average Selling Price, as well as ANY_OFFER_CHANGED and PRICE_HEALTH notifications. getCompetitiveSummary returns competitive details for an ASIN and featured buying-option details. Use the field that answers your seller-pricing question, not a loosely named “price” value.
Interpret signals by their definitions
- Average Selling Price: Amazon calculates this from purchases in the previous 60 days and excludes prices and quantities during promotions such as Best Deals and Lightning Deals. It is not necessarily a current competitor offer.
- Price by Amazon (
retailOfferPrice): Amazon defines this as the highest price listed in the preceding 14 days for products shipped and sold by Amazon. - Competitive summary and Featured Offer signals: These describe specific competitive or featured buying-option information, not a complete historical series for all marketplace offers.
Amazon’s pricing documentation describes batch operations with limits of up to 40 SKUs for Featured Offer Expected Price data and up to 20 ASINs for featured offers. These are operation-specific batch sizes, not a total tracking allowance. See the Product Pricing API and Notifications FAQ for definitions and operation details.

Combine polling with notifications
Use pull operations when your system needs a snapshot or reconciliation, and use notifications when you need to react to supported changes. Store each observation with its timestamp, ASIN or SKU, marketplace, currency, and the signal’s definition. A notification stream and periodic snapshots complement one another; neither should be treated as a complete historical record unless your own collection has retained the observations.
Use a third-party tracker when history and alerts are central
Keepa documents marketplace offer objects that can include seller, condition, fulfillment and Prime flags, coupons, and price, shipping, stock, and Prime-exclusive histories. Its tracking configuration supports desired-price thresholds, marketplace locale identifiers, API notification delivery, and out-of-stock or back-in-stock criteria. This makes it a route to evaluate when the goal is a history and threshold alerts rather than just seller-facing Amazon signals.
History quality depends on collection and request behavior. Keepa warns that returned offers may be stale or incomplete and histories can contain gaps. Its documentation recommends checking lastSeen and update information, and requesting data regularly when fuller offer coverage is needed. Missing observations mean “unknown,” not proof that the price stayed unchanged. Review the offer object documentation and tracking creation documentation for the fields and alert criteria.

Use Amazon’s price history for a quick shopper view
Amazon describes price-history views of 30, 90, and 365 days. Its page lists the feature as available to customers in the U.S., UK, Canada, and India; the stated rollout of 365-day insights names the U.S., UK, and India. Availability can vary by marketplace and product, so confirm the history period shown on the product page. Amazon’s page, published May 1, 2026 and updated June 24, 2026, also notes that Rufus was renamed Alexa for Shopping on May 13, 2026. These customer-facing views are useful for a quick check, but they are not a substitute for a seller’s own structured monitoring pipeline.
Keep monitoring separate from repricing
Monitoring records or alerts on market conditions; repricing changes your offer. Amazon Automate Pricing is for a seller’s own prices, requires a Professional selling account and an active offer, and is included with the Professional selling plan. Sellers can set minimum and optional maximum prices, and Amazon provides a detailed 30-day history to compare with business reports.
Recommended Free Tools
Price changes do not guarantee Featured Offer status. Amazon notes that inventory availability, fulfillment, and customer service are among the other performance-based requirements. Use price floors and optional ceilings to bound rule behavior, and evaluate results against Seller Central reports rather than assuming that matching a competitor will win the Featured Offer.

Build a reliable monitoring workflow
- Write down the decision. Decide whether you need an alert, a time series for analysis, a current seller-facing signal, or an automated change to your own offer.
- Choose a permitted source. For seller signals, verify SP-API access, roles, and marketplace requirements. For a third-party provider, check its terms, coverage, commercial plan, limits, and notification method. The sources here do not establish permission for arbitrary scraping.
- Define comparable offers. Normalize product variants and pack sizes, condition, fulfillment, shipping, coupons, currency, and stock treatment before comparing values.
- Capture context with every observation. Store timestamp, marketplace, product identifier, seller or offer when available, signal name, price components, and source update information.
- Use events for responsiveness and scheduled collection for analysis. Notifications can surface supported changes; periodic snapshots let your system retain a series and reconcile gaps.
- Validate freshness and gaps. Check update timestamps or fields such as Keepa’s
lastSeen. Mark absent or stale observations as unknown rather than carrying a prior price forward as if it were current. - Review alert and repricing outcomes. Tune thresholds to the decision you actually make. If rules change your own price, apply bounds and assess outcomes with seller reports.
Troubleshoot common monitoring problems
- You cannot access a competitive-summary operation: Verify that the account is eligible for SP-API, the required Pricing role is authorized, and the selected marketplace and operation are supported.
- A field does not match the competitor’s current offer: Check its formal meaning and time window. Average Selling Price is a historical sales measure, and Price by Amazon has a specific Amazon-sold definition; neither should automatically be treated as the lowest live third-party offer.
- An offer is missing or seems old: Treat the record as stale or incomplete until its update and last-seen information supports freshness. A provider’s offer history may have gaps; do not infer a constant price between observations.
- An alert fires for the wrong comparison: Recheck marketplace locale, ASIN/variant, seller or offer selection, condition, fulfillment, shipping, coupon treatment, and threshold. “Price” must use the same basis on both sides.
- A low price does not win the Featured Offer: Repricing is not a guarantee. Review eligibility factors such as inventory, fulfillment, and customer service, as well as the configured rule limits.
- Your shopper history view is unavailable or shorter than expected: Check marketplace and product-page availability. The 365-day rollout and the stated feature country list are not identical, so do not assume the longest period appears everywhere.

Does Amazon Automate Pricing monitor competitors without changing my price?
Automate Pricing is a rule-based tool for adjusting your own active offer. For monitoring, choose a seller-facing signal or a history-and-alert source instead.
Does an Amazon price-history chart prove a price was unchanged between points?
No. A displayed history is a view of recorded history, not proof that a price remained constant at every unobserved moment.
