For repeatable web automation, use a version-pinned Chrome for Testing build with its matching ChromeDriver. Use regular Google Chrome when the test needs to reflect the auto-updating browser people use. Choose Chromium when you specifically need to test Chromium or a particular Chromium revision. The right choice depends on whether you value user-browser fidelity, repeatability, or a specific open-source build.

Chrome, Chromium, and Chrome for Testing: what each means

Chromium is an open-source browser project and a family of browser builds. Google Chrome is a browser Google builds, packages, and distributes using Chromium. Their exact differences depend on the operating system; the official comparison available here describes Linux, not every platform. Chromium’s download documentation and Google’s platform-specific comparison help distinguish the project from Google’s distributed browser.

Chrome for Testing is a Chrome build intended for browser automation and testing. It is versioned for download and released in lockstep with Chrome channels, making it useful when a test needs a known browser version rather than one that may update automatically. Chrome for Developers describes Chrome for Testing as a Chrome flavor for web app testing and automation.

Which browser should you use for testing?

Testing goal Best fit Trade-off
Reproduce a test or bug consistently in CI Version-pinned Chrome for Testing with its matching ChromeDriver You must deliberately update the browser and driver versions.
Check the current browser experience users receive Regular Google Chrome Automatic updates can change the version between runs.
Test Chromium itself or a specific Chromium revision A Chromium build for the required revision Builds may be best-effort snapshots from arbitrary revisions and may not correspond to a consumer Chrome release.

Chrome’s guidance explains that pinning a Chrome for Testing version supports consistent test runs and lets teams rerun older commits against the browser version used at the time. See the Chrome for Testing announcement and guidance. If your purpose is to validate the browser users currently receive, normal Chrome is more representative, but its moving version weakens run-to-run reproducibility.

Can you use Chromium instead of Chrome for Selenium?

Yes, when the Chromium build is the browser you intend to test and your automation setup can use that build. But “Chromium” does not identify one fixed release: downloadable builds can come from arbitrary revisions, may be best-effort, and may not map neatly to a user-facing Chrome release. For stable Chrome-oriented Selenium runs, prefer Chrome for Testing and its matching ChromeDriver rather than an arbitrary Chromium snapshot. Chrome’s automation overview covers Chrome for Testing and ChromeDriver within its automation ecosystem: ChromeDriver documentation.

Keep the browser binary decision separate from the test framework. Chrome for Testing, ChromeDriver, Puppeteer, and headless mode are automation components or options; the browser choice does not determine whether a test is a browser integration/end-to-end test or a web test that checks rendered or JavaScript output against expected results. Chromium’s testing documentation distinguishes those test types: Chromium testing overview.

Headless Chrome or the older headless shell?

Current Chrome Headless mode runs Chrome without showing a visible UI. Starting with Chrome 112, the updated mode uses Chrome itself and creates platform windows without displaying them. That makes it the more faithful choice when the test needs full Chrome behavior, such as high-fidelity end-to-end or extension testing.

The older headless shell is a separate, lighter wrapper around Chromium’s //content module. Its smaller dependency footprint can suit lightweight screenshot or scraping tasks, but it is not the same choice as running full Chrome headlessly. Choose based on whether reduced dependencies or full-browser fidelity matters more. Chrome’s Headless documentation explains the modes.

Platform differences: do not assume Linux details apply everywhere

Chrome and Chromium can differ in codecs, packaging, profile and cache locations, and crash or user reporting behavior. The official feature comparison cited for those examples is Linux-specific, so treat them as Linux differences rather than universal rules. If a test depends on a codec, file path, package format, or profile behavior, verify it on the exact operating system and build used in CI. Consult Chromium’s platform-specific download and comparison information.

Keep automation builds secure and reproducible

Chrome for Testing does not auto-update. Pinning makes runs reproducible, but it also means the team must refresh the browser and driver intentionally. Chromium’s security guidance warns that Chromium may not include recent security fixes and recommends using it only for browser automation and testing with trustworthy content. Do not treat a pinned test binary as a daily browsing installation; schedule updates and limit what test builds are allowed to access. Read Chromium’s security guidance.

Capture a page without managing a local browser

If the immediate task is a screenshot rather than a browser-driven interaction test, ScreenshotNeo is an alternative to try first: it returns a screenshot or PDF from one GET request and reports whether the page was billed, failed, blank, or served from cache. It does not replace Selenium or validate interactive behavior, but it can avoid setting up a browser for capture-only work.
