Locate a Selenium WebElement, then call its attribute method with the name you want. Be aware that getAttribute() may return the element’s current DOM property rather than the literal value in its HTML. Use the DOM-attribute or DOM-property method when you need one specific value.
Get an attribute value in Selenium
Here are basic examples in Python and Java. In both cases, first find the element, then request the value by name.
Python
from selenium.webdriver.common.by import By
link = driver.find_element(By.CSS_SELECTOR, "a.next")
href = link.get_attribute("href")
print(href)
This uses the Selenium Python binding’s get_attribute() method. See the Python WebElement API for binding-specific details.
Java
WebElement link = driver.findElement(By.cssSelector("a.next"));
String href = link.getAttribute("href");
System.out.println(href);
See the Java WebElement API for the documented method behavior.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Understand what getAttribute() returns
In the documented Java and Python APIs, the general attribute method is property-first: Selenium returns a same-named DOM property when one exists, and otherwise falls back to the attribute. If neither exists, Java returns null and Python returns None. That means the result can differ from the literal markup, especially after user interaction or script changes an element’s state.
For example, an input may have a value in its original HTML, while its live value property changes as a user types. A property-first call can reflect the current state rather than the initial markup. Choose the method that matches what your test is asserting.

Choose between a DOM attribute and a DOM property
| What you need | Python | Java | Use it for |
|---|---|---|---|
| General property-first lookup | get_attribute(name) |
getAttribute(name) |
Convenience lookup when the fallback behavior is acceptable. |
| Attribute value from the DOM markup | get_dom_attribute(name) |
getDomAttribute(name) |
Assertions about the attribute itself, rather than a same-named live property. |
| Current DOM property | get_property(name) |
getDomProperty(name) |
Assertions about the element’s current state, including changes after page load. |
For an explicit Python comparison:
markup_value = element.get_dom_attribute("value")
current_value = element.get_property("value")
print("Markup attribute:", markup_value)
print("Current property:", current_value)
The Java API describes getDomAttribute() as returning the named attribute, not a property with the same name. Its getDomProperty() method reads the current property value. Consult the binding’s API documentation for its precise behavior.
Boolean attributes and binding-specific results
Do not assume all bindings represent boolean attributes the same way. The Java API documents boolean attributes such as disabled, checked, selected, and required as returning the string "true" when present and null when absent through its attribute methods. Java’s general getAttribute() also maps common names such as class and readonly to the className and readOnly properties.

Python documents get_attribute() as returning booleans for values it considers truthy, including "true" and "false"; other non-None results are strings. Handle the return type according to the binding you use instead of assuming Java, Python, and JavaScript behave identically.

JavaScript
The Selenium JavaScript WebElement API provides getAttribute, getDomAttribute, and getProperty. These methods return promises, so await the result in asynchronous code:

Troubleshoot unexpected values
- The value differs from the HTML: You may be reading a live property through the property-first method. Use
get_dom_attribute()in Python orgetDomAttribute()in Java to request the DOM attribute specifically. - The value reflects typing or interaction: That is likely the current property state. Use the binding’s property method when current state is what you intend to verify.
- The result is missing: Confirm the locator found the intended element and that the named attribute or property exists. The general method returns
Nonein Python ornullin Java when neither is present. - A boolean check behaves unexpectedly: Check the binding’s documented return type; Python may return a boolean, while Java documents strings or
nullfor the cited boolean-attribute behavior. - JavaScript appears to return a promise: Await the method call before using its result.

If your goal is a screenshot rather than a Selenium DOM assertion, ScreenshotNeo can capture a URL with one GET request. It is a website screenshot API and MCP server for developers.
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options. Before capture, it can accept cookie or consent banners and remove 60+ known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each step can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and response headers report the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for AI agents and other MCP clients. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots.
