Selenium and Playwright are browser-automation tools, not replacements for deciding how your unit and integration tests should be organized.
Choose a framework by what you need to test
There is no single framework that fits every Python project. Start with the behavior under test, then account for the suite you already have, how your team likes to write tests, browser coverage, and what your continuous-integration (CI) agents can run. These are practical decision criteria, not benchmark categories.
| Need | Starting point | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Test Python functions or modules with no added test-runner dependency | unittest |
It ships with Python and includes cases, fixtures, suites, runners, command-line execution, and test discovery. |
| Write function-style tests with plain assertions and reusable fixtures | pytest | It offers detailed assertion failure output, automatic discovery, modular fixtures, and support for unittest suites. |
| Exercise a web application in a browser | Selenium or Playwright, commonly paired with pytest or unittest | These tools automate browser interactions; they complement rather than replace a test runner. |
If a project already has a working suite, do not migrate for fashion’s sake. pytest can run unittest tests, so adopting it incrementally is an option. For browser tests, compare the browser and remote-session coverage you need, existing test code, CI setup, and debugging workflow. Selenium’s project guidance puts the point plainly: “No one approach works for all situations.”
Use unittest for standard-library testing
unittest is a sound choice when avoiding an external runner matters, when a project already uses it, or when its class-based test structure suits the team. A test class subclasses unittest.TestCase; test methods conventionally begin with test. Setup and cleanup methods can prepare or release resources around tests.

import unittest
def add(a, b):
return a + b
class AddTests(unittest.TestCase):
def test_adds_two_numbers(self):
self.assertEqual(add(2, 3), 5)
if __name__ == "__main__":
unittest.main()
Save this as test_math.py and run it directly with python test_math.py. For discovery from a project directory, run python -m unittest discover. Test cases can be run independently or in combinations, so keep each case self-contained where possible.
Use pytest for a flexible general-purpose runner
pytest is an external framework and runner. Its plain assert statements are reported with failure details, and fixtures provide reusable setup and teardown. The current pytest overview documents Python 3.10+ or PyPy 3 support; check its live compatibility documentation when selecting a Python version, since compatibility can change.
def add(a, b):
return a + b
def test_adds_two_numbers():
assert add(2, 3) == 5
Save the file as test_math.py and invoke pytest from the project environment. pytest conventionally discovers files named test_*.py or *_test.py. Consistent naming makes it easier for both contributors and CI to find tests.
Set up a project environment
- Create and activate a virtual environment for the project so test and application dependencies stay isolated.
- Install the project and the test runner in that environment. For a package you are actively developing, pytest’s documented good-practices guidance describes editable installation as one suitable layout.
- Put tests in a dedicated test directory or use another consistent layout that fits the project; make sure the test command discovers the intended files.
- Run the same test command locally and in CI, and add the command to the project’s contributor instructions.
pytest can run many existing unittest suites without rewriting them. That makes it possible to adopt pytest’s runner and fixtures gradually while retaining existing TestCase classes.

Add browser automation only for browser behavior
A unit test can check a function’s output without launching a browser. A browser test is appropriate when the behavior depends on the rendered page, user interaction, navigation, or browser-specific behavior. Keep the layers complementary: use ordinary tests for code-level behavior and a focused set of browser tests for user-visible flows.
Selenium WebDriver and Playwright both automate browsers from Python. Selenium’s Python documentation demonstrates integration with both unittest and pytest. Selenium Manager can handle browser and driver installation when a WebDriver is instantiated, but verify the actual browser setup in your environment. If you need remote WebDriver sessions, Selenium requires a Selenium Grid.
Do not assume either tool is categorically faster, more reliable, or better across all browsers. Check the browsers and environments your project must support, the team’s existing code, and the setup and debugging facilities available in CI.
Keep browser tests isolated and clean up sessions
- Give each test a clear purpose and avoid relying on state left by an earlier test.
- Arrange setup and teardown so that browser sessions close even when an assertion fails. Selenium’s examples use cleanup or fixture teardown to call
driver.quit(). - Prefer stable page conditions—such as waiting for an expected element—over assumptions that the page will always load in a fixed amount of time.
- Keep test data and interactions understandable so a failure points toward the behavior being checked rather than hidden shared state.
Plan CI browser dependencies explicitly
A browser test agent needs to be able to launch the required browser and its operating-system dependencies. Playwright’s Python CI guidance shows a workflow that ensures browsers can run, installs Playwright and browser dependencies with playwright install --with-deps, and then runs pytest. Its GitHub Actions example retains traces on failure and uploads test artifacts; those are example workflow choices, not universal requirements.

playwright install --with-deps
pytest
Adapt installation and artifact collection to the CI provider and browser coverage your project actually needs. Confirm the browser dependencies on the specific agent image rather than assuming a developer laptop and CI runner have identical environments.
Make the test suite maintainable
- Keep tests independent. A test should be runnable alone and should not depend on execution order or another test’s side effects.
- Use a consistent discovery layout. With pytest, use the conventional
test_*.pyor*_test.pynames unless the project has a deliberate alternative. - Isolate dependencies. Use a virtual environment during development and ensure CI installs the same declared project and test dependencies.
- Adopt tools incrementally. If you have unittest tests, pytest support lets you introduce a new runner without replacing the suite all at once.
- Make cleanup explicit. Release files, services, and browser sessions reliably, including on test failure.
- Keep browser coverage purposeful. Cross-browser and browser-environment complexity make functional tests challenging; automate interactions where a browser is part of the behavior you need to verify.
- Choose practices for your environment. Selenium’s guidance cautions against treating any one approach as universal.
Capture a web page as a visual test artifact
If a browser test needs a screenshot artifact, you can capture it through your browser automation setup. That keeps the capture in the same test workflow, but it also means your test environment must manage the browser and its dependencies. A screenshot is an artifact to inspect or compare; by itself, it does not establish that the page is correct.
Or skip the browser setup
For a standalone website screenshot, ScreenshotNeo provides a screenshot API and MCP server. One GET request can return an image or PDF; its clean-shot steps can accept consent banners and remove supported consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture. Each step can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and responses identify the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server offers screenshot and PDF tools for MCP clients including Claude and Cursor. See ScreenshotNeo and the API documentation.

Imports work locally but fail in CI
Check that CI installs the project and its test dependencies into the environment used to run tests. Keep local and CI setup aligned, and use the project’s documented package layout rather than relying on incidental working-directory behavior.
A browser test cannot launch in CI
Verify that the runner can launch the required browser and has the necessary OS dependencies. For Playwright, follow its CI setup guidance for installing Playwright and browser dependencies. For Selenium, verify browser availability and driver handling in that environment; Selenium Manager’s behavior does not eliminate the need to validate the runner setup.
A test passes alone but fails in the full suite
Look for shared state, order dependencies, reused test data, or resources not being cleaned up. Make setup and teardown local to the test or fixture, and ensure browser sessions and other resources are closed after failures as well as successes.
A browser failure is hard to diagnose
Check whether the CI workflow can preserve useful artifacts. Playwright’s documented GitHub Actions example retains traces on failure and uploads artifacts; configure an equivalent approach only if it fits your runner and retention needs.
