Learn to recognize when a pattern reduces real complexity, and when a plain function, object, or native language feature is clearer.
What design patterns are—and when to use them
A design pattern gives developers shared vocabulary for a recurring problem and a familiar set of tradeoffs. The name is useful when it helps explain why code is structured a certain way; it is not a requirement to add another layer of abstraction.
Before adopting a pattern, ask whether it fits the problem, how much indirection it adds, who owns state and for how long, how tightly components become coupled, and whether JavaScript already provides the needed feature. Patterns can be implemented with functions, objects, or classes. Prefer the simplest form that makes the intent and dependencies clear.
Factory: centralize creation when choices vary
A factory function selects and creates a variant behind a stable interface. It is useful when creation depends on configuration or a changing set of alternatives. For one uncomplicated construction, direct creation is easier to follow.

Start with direct construction
function createNotification(message) {
return { type: "toast", message };
}
If there is only one kind of notification, the function above is sufficient. A factory becomes useful when callers should not need to know which implementation to construct.
Add a factory for variant selection
function createNotification(kind, message) {
switch (kind) {
case "toast":
return { show: () => console.log(`Toast: ${message}`) };
case "email":
return { show: () => console.log(`Email: ${message}`) };
default:
throw new Error(`Unknown notification kind: ${kind}`);
}
}
const notification = createNotification("toast", "Saved");
notification.show();
The caller uses the returned object’s show() operation without branching on its concrete type. Keep the interface consistent across variants, and make unsupported options fail clearly. If the factory grows into a large switch, separate implementations or configuration may be easier to maintain.
Strategy: make an algorithm interchangeable
Strategy represents alternatives with the same call shape. In JavaScript, a function passed as an argument or a dispatch object is often simpler than a family of strategy classes.

Use a function for a selected rule
const pricingRules = {
regular: total => total,
member: total => total * 0.9,
clearance: total => total * 0.7,
};
function calculateTotal(subtotal, rule = pricingRules.regular) {
return rule(subtotal);
}
console.log(calculateTotal(100, pricingRules.member));
Each rule accepts a total and returns a total, so the calculation can change without embedding every pricing condition in one function. This is a good fit when algorithms vary independently or need to be selected at runtime. For a tiny, stable conditional, a direct if statement may be more readable.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Observer: notify subscribers and clean them up
Observer lets a subject notify registered callbacks when an event or state change occurs. It works well when several consumers need updates from one source. The subject should own the subscription list and define when notifications happen.
A small observable with unsubscribe
function createSignal() {
const listeners = new Set();
return {
subscribe(listener) {
listeners.add(listener);
return () => listeners.delete(listener);
},
emit(value) {
for (const listener of listeners) listener(value);
},
};
}
const saved = createSignal();
const unsubscribe = saved.subscribe(value => console.log("Saved:", value));
saved.emit({ id: 7 });
unsubscribe();
Call the returned cleanup function when a subscriber no longer needs updates—for example, when a UI component is removed. Otherwise, retained callbacks can cause stale behavior or keep objects alive longer than intended. A direct callback is often enough when there is one known consumer; a publish/subscribe event bus is a broader channel that can decouple publishers from subscribers, but it can make event ownership and flow harder to trace.

Module: use native files before closure-based substitutes
Modern JavaScript modules provide file-level boundaries, explicit imports and exports, and bindings that remain private when they are not exported. They are the natural starting point for organizing code. The older Module pattern used closures and object literals to imitate encapsulation; it remains a technique, not a prerequisite for modern code.
Export a focused interface
// math.js
const internalRate = 1.2;
export function addTax(amount) {
return amount * internalRate;
}
// app.js
import { addTax } from "./math.js";
console.log(addTax(10));
Keep imports near the top of the file so dependencies are easy to inspect. How module specifiers resolve depends on the host and project configuration: browser examples generally need valid URLs or paths, while server-side resolution follows that runtime’s rules. See MDN’s guides to JavaScript modules and the JavaScript language overview for the host distinction.

The Decorator pattern extends behavior by wrapping a function or object while preserving a usable interface. It is distinct from syntax-level JavaScript decorators, whose implementation details depend on the runtime and toolchain; this example uses ordinary functions and runs without decorator syntax.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
Wrap a function with timing behavior
function withTiming(fn) {
return (...args) => {
const started = performance.now();
try {
return fn(...args);
} finally {
console.log(`${fn.name || "operation"}: ${performance.now() - started} ms`);
}
};
}
const save = withTiming(function saveRecord(record) {
return { ...record, saved: true };
});
save({ id: 7 });
The wrapper preserves the original function’s arguments and return value while adding timing output. Wrapping can also add logging or validation, but each layer adds another place to inspect behavior. Avoid wrappers that silently change the contract callers rely on.

These patterns are useful vocabulary when a concrete problem calls for them; none is a default architecture.
- Singleton: provides one shared instance, but often introduces global mutable state and test coupling. Prefer passing a dependency explicitly when callers need the same service.
- Proxy: presents an interface that controls access to another object, such as when access needs interception or deferral.
- Command: packages an operation and its data as an object or function, which can help when operations must be queued, recorded, or undone.
- Dependency injection: supplies a component’s dependencies from outside instead of having it construct them internally; this can make substitution and testing easier.
- Mediator: centralizes coordination among components when direct cross-component communication becomes tangled.
- Facade: gives callers a simpler interface over a more complex subsystem.

Should you learn design patterns for React or Node.js?
You do not need to memorize a catalog before building applications. Learn enough to recognize recurring problems and explain the tradeoff of a solution. The same fundamentals—clear module boundaries, deliberate state ownership, interchangeable functions, and cleanup of subscriptions—apply across JavaScript environments. Framework-specific conventions may already address a problem, so check whether the feature or framework you are using provides a simpler answer before adding a pattern.
Classes are another option when an object owns meaningful state and behavior. JavaScript is prototype-based, and class syntax builds on that model; choosing classes is a design decision, not a requirement. Use them when the state-and-behavior relationship benefits from a class, and use plain objects or functions when those communicate intent better. MDN’s guide to using classes explains the language model.
How to choose without overengineering
- State the problem first. Identify what varies, who needs to communicate, or what state must be protected.
- Write the simplest working baseline. Try a direct function, object, conditional, or native module.
- Add a pattern only for a specific gain. For example, centralize branching creation with a factory or allow a caller to substitute an algorithm with Strategy.
- Check the cost. Count added indirection, identify state ownership and lifetime, and consider how a test can replace or observe the component.
- Make lifecycle behavior explicit. Provide unsubscribe or disposal paths for subscriptions and avoid hidden mutable shared state.
- Explain the choice in plain language. A pattern name is useful when it makes the design easier for the next developer to understand.
