Selenium uses the same window-handle mechanism for tabs and windows.
Switch to a tab opened by a click
A click that opens a tab does not automatically make that tab the active context for WebDriver commands. Keep the original handle, wait for the new context, then switch to its handle. Selenium’s official Python example follows this pattern: Working with windows and tabs.

The call to driver.switch_to.window() selects an existing context by handle. The set difference identifies the handle that was not open before the click, rather than assuming that the new tab will always occupy a particular list position.
Wait for the right condition
number_of_windows_to_be(2) is suitable when the test starts with one context and the click should open exactly one more. If other tabs may open, use the original handle set with Selenium’s new_window_is_opened condition, then calculate the difference:

Selenium documents both explicit-wait conditions in its Python expected conditions API. The example assumes the action opens one new context; if the page can open several, decide which one the test should use rather than relying on an arbitrary handle.
Create a new tab from the test
If the test—not the page—should create the context, Selenium 4 and later provides new_window("tab"). It creates a tab and switches WebDriver to it. Pass "window" to request a separate window instead. The documented Python API accepts those values: SwitchTo API reference.

driver.switch_to.new_window("tab")
This differs from the click workflow: new_window creates the browsing context, while window(handle) selects one that already exists.
Return to the original tab or close a tab
Save the original handle before switching if the test needs to return to it. After closing the current tab, switch explicitly to a handle that remains open before sending more commands. Selenium warns that commands sent while targeting a closed context can raise a No Such Window Exception.

# Use driver.quit() at the end to close the whole WebDriver session.
driver.close() closes the current tab or window; driver.quit() ends the WebDriver session and closes all its contexts. The distinction and handle workflow are covered in Selenium’s browser windows documentation.
Common problems and fixes
- The click succeeds, but commands still affect the first tab: a click does not select the newly opened context for WebDriver. Wait for the new handle and call
driver.switch_to.window(new_window). - The test times out waiting for two windows: confirm the click actually opens another context and that the expected count matches the starting state. If the test may have multiple contexts, wait with
new_window_is_opened(before)instead of assuming the total is exactly two. - The test raises
No Such Window Exceptionafter closing a tab: switch to a still-open saved handle before issuing another command. - The wrong new tab is selected: compare handles before and after the action. Do not assume the new handle is at index 1 or that the browser’s ordering will match the test’s assumptions.
