Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteThe key difference is what happens after a check fails: a hard assertion typically stops the current test path, while a soft verification records or collects the failure and lets later checks run. But Selenium WebDriver itself does not provide a universal verify command. The exact behavior comes from the testing tool or assertion framework you use.
Does Selenium WebDriver have both assert and verify commands?
No. WebDriver controls a browser; it does not define how a test compares values, reports pass or fail, or handles a failed check. Selenium’s components guide says WebDriver “does not know a thing about testing,” including how to assert pass or fail. Selenium components guide (last modified July 20, 2026).
In older Selenium terminology and in Selenium IDE, assert generally means a fail-fast check and verify a soft check. Those terms are not a pair of built-in WebDriver methods shared by Java, Python, JavaScript, C#, and other bindings. For WebDriver tests, your test runner and assertion library determine the syntax and failure behavior. Selenium’s testing guide recommends using an assertion library and test runner, and lists choices including JUnit, TestNG, pytest, unittest, NUnit, MSTest, RSpec, Minitest, Jest, Mocha, and Kotest. Selenium testing practices
What happens when each kind of check fails?
| Behavior | Hard assertion | Soft verification or assertion |
|---|---|---|
| After failure | Typically marks the test as failed and interrupts the current path. For example, TestNG documents that a failed Assert throws AssertionError. TestNG 7.9.0 Assert API |
Records or collects the failure and allows later checks to run. Selenium IDE documentation describes its verify commands as soft assertions and says the test continues after a verify failure. Selenium IDE commands |
| Useful for | A prerequisite or critical invariant that later actions depend on | Independent checks where seeing several failures in one run is useful |
| Trade-off | Fails promptly, but later independent checks may not run | Can reveal more failures at once, but needs deliberate collection and reporting |
| Scope | Behavior depends on the assertion framework and test runner | “Verify” behavior is tool-specific; Selenium IDE’s command semantics are not a universal WebDriver rule |
When should you use a hard assertion or a soft check?
Use a hard assertion for a prerequisite
Stop the test path when proceeding would be meaningless, unsafe, or misleading. For example, if the next actions require a successful sign-in, first check that the expected account page is present. If that condition fails, continuing with account-specific actions is unlikely to produce useful results.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Use soft checks for independent expectations
Collect soft failures when the checks do not depend on one another and a single run should report several problems—for example, separately checking the labels or links in a page section. The framework must retain the failures and report them later; merely continuing execution does not guarantee a useful summary.
How does this look in a WebDriver test?
The following Java example uses TestNG’s hard assertion API. It illustrates a framework-specific pattern; it does not call a WebDriver verify method.

In TestNG 7.9.0, a failed Assert throws AssertionError, so dependent statements after it are not reached on that test path. Other frameworks provide their own assertion APIs and soft-assertion mechanisms; consult the documentation for the specific framework and version you use rather than assuming that a method named “verify” behaves the same everywhere.
