Choose CSS by the constraint you need to solve: use container queries when a component should respond to its own available space, cascade layers when you need an explicit precedence system, nesting to keep related rules together, and @supports to add features without sacrificing a usable baseline. None is a universal replacement for older techniques; check your target browsers and keep sensible fallback styles.
Make a component respond to its container, not the viewport
A card may look right in a wide page and break when reused in a narrow sidebar. A media query measures viewport or device conditions; a size container query measures a declared containing element. That makes a container query useful when the component’s own slot—not the overall window—should determine its layout. See MDN’s guide to container size and style queries.
.card-shell {
container-type: inline-size;
}
.card {
display: grid;
gap: 1rem;
}
@container (width > 36rem) {
.card {
grid-template-columns: 8rem 1fr;
}
}
The base card remains a single-column grid. When its query container is wider than the example threshold, the card switches to two columns. This is an illustrative pattern, not a tested demo; choose the threshold from the content and design constraints, rather than treating 36rem as a standard breakpoint.
When a media query is still the right choice
Use a media query when the condition genuinely concerns the viewport or device, such as an overall page layout responding to available screen width. Use a container query when the same component may appear in differently sized slots and should adapt independently in each one. A component can use both when it has both kinds of constraints.

Support and fallback
Keep a usable base layout outside the query, then check live compatibility information for the actual browsers your project supports. Google’s Baseline page lists size container queries as Newly available in February 2023; that dated milestone is a support signal, not proof that every browser your users run supports the feature. Check Baseline and your project’s browser targets.
Stop escalating selector specificity to control precedence
When vendor, base, component and utility rules keep competing, cascade layers let you declare an order for groups of styles instead of continually making selectors more specific. MDN describes layers as a way to prioritize sections of CSS without fighting specificity. A typical starting order is:
@layer reset, vendor, base, components, utilities;
Put declarations into those layers consistently. For example, third-party CSS can be imported into a vendor layer when it is available to you as an import:

@layer reset, vendor, base, components, utilities;
@import url("vendor.css") layer(vendor);
@layer components {
.button {
border-radius: 0.5rem;
}
}
Layer order is not a magic override switch. Normal unlayered author styles outrank normal layered author styles from the same origin, so an unlayered declaration may bypass the precedence plan. Audit styles that remain outside your layers. MDN explains the ordering behavior in its cascade layers guide.
Layers versus selector escalation
| Approach | How precedence is expressed | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Cascade layers | Explicit order among named groups of styles. | Requires a consistent layer plan; normal unlayered rules still outrank normal layered rules from the same origin. |
| More-specific selectors | Precedence is implicit in selector specificity. | Can make later overrides harder to manage and encourages escalation. |
Avoid making !important or duplicated selectors the default repair. MDN’s specificity guidance says the best approach is not to use !important; layers offer a standard way to prioritize styles without relying on specificity. See MDN’s specificity guide.
Keep related rules together with CSS nesting
When a component’s base styles and variants are scattered through a long stylesheet, native nesting can keep related rules close together. At-rules whose bodies contain style rules can also be nested inside a style rule, allowing a component’s conditional styles to sit beside its base styles. For example:

- Flawless 4K@60Hz Video with HDMI: Delivers exceptional clarity and smoothness with its 4K@60Hz HDMI port, making it ideal for high-definition presentations and entertainment. (Note: Only the HDMI port supports video projection; the USB-C port is for data transfer only.)
- Double Up on Efficiency: The two USB-A 3.0 ports and a USB-C port support a fast 5Gbps data rate, significantly boosting your transfer speeds and improving productivity.
- Fast and Reliable 85W Charging: Offers high-capacity, speedy charging for laptops up to 85W, so you spend less time tethered to an outlet and more time being productive.

@media (width > 40rem) {

Use nesting for locality, not as permission to build deep selector chains. Check how each nested selector resolves and keep the relationship readable. Google’s Baseline page lists CSS nesting as Newly available in August 2023; confirm support for your target browser set rather than inferring universal support from that date. See the Baseline milestones and MDN’s CSS nesting reference.
Add newer features without breaking the baseline
Start with styles that preserve the content and primary interaction in browsers that lack an enhancement. Add the newer capability inside @supports so the browser applies it only when the relevant feature test succeeds. MDN’s guide to feature queries and older browsers recommends this baseline-first approach.

}
@supports (display: grid) {
.panel {
display: grid;
grid-template-columns: 1fr 2fr;
gap: 1rem;
}
}
The first rule is the fallback; the grid layout is an enhancement. Test the feature your enhancement actually depends on, and make sure the fallback still presents the content and permits the main task. Feature queries do not replace checking your project’s minimum browser versions.

Let a parent theme influence descendants carefully
Container style queries can test a custom property on a container and apply styles to descendants. This can help a parent expose a theme choice to components within it. MDN documents custom-property style queries, but says style queries for regular CSS declarations and properties are not yet supported in any browser. Do not rely on a query such as @container style(font-weight: bold) to inspect an ordinary computed property. Also avoid applying queried styles to the queried element itself when that could create an infinite loop. See MDN’s container query support notes.
Check milestones against the browsers you actually support
Baseline milestones provide dated context, not a substitute for a project-specific support decision. Google’s Baseline page lists these features as Newly available on the following dates:
| Feature | Baseline milestone |
|---|---|
| Size container queries | February 2023 |
| Subgrid | September 2023 |
| CSS nesting | August 2023 |
:has() |
December 2023 |
Those dates do not establish population-wide support. Before shipping a feature, check current compatibility data for the browsers and versions your project targets, then retain a fallback wherever the feature is not guaranteed. Google web.dev: Baseline.
