With php-webdriver/php-webdriver, call $driver->executeScript() to run synchronous JavaScript in the browser’s currently selected frame. Use executeAsyncScript() when the script must finish asynchronous work and signal completion through Selenium’s callback.
Run synchronous JavaScript with executeScript()
Call executeScript() on your RemoteWebDriver instance. The first argument is JavaScript source; the optional second argument is an array of values or element references to pass into the script.

$driver->executeScript('document.body.style.backgroundColor = "red";');Include JavaScript’s return when you need a value in PHP. Without it, the script can still change page state, but it does not return the expression’s value to your PHP code.
Pass PHP values and web elements safely
Do not build JavaScript by concatenating PHP values into the source string. Pass values as the second argument and refer to them in JavaScript as arguments[0], arguments[1], and so on. This also works for elements located with WebDriver.

Choose between synchronous and asynchronous execution

For asynchronous execution, the callback’s value becomes the PHP method result. Configure a script timeout appropriate to the operation using the timeout API for your installed php-webdriver version; there is no universal timeout value established here.

);Every success and failure path in an asynchronous script should eventually invoke the callback. Otherwise, WebDriver continues waiting until the configured script timeout is reached.
Run the script in the intended browser context
JavaScript executes in the currently selected frame or window. If the target page is inside another frame, or the script needs a different window, switch to that browsing context before calling either execution method. A script that refers to document will operate on the document belonging to the selected context, not automatically on every frame or window.

When JavaScript is—and is not—the right tool
Use JavaScript execution for page-context work, such as reading page state or changing a style. For ordinary test actions, use WebDriver’s element interactions when they express the behavior you intend to test. A script that changes page state is not, by itself, evidence that a user could perform the same action; the cited API behavior does not establish that JavaScript-triggered actions are equivalent to user input.
Troubleshooting JavaScript execution
- The script reads the wrong page or returns an unexpected value: Confirm the active window and frame, and check that the driver is on the intended page before execution.
- PHP receives no value: Add a JavaScript
returnfor synchronous execution. For asynchronous execution, pass the desired value to Selenium’s completion callback. - An asynchronous call waits or times out: Check that every completion path calls the injected callback, then review the script timeout configured for the installed php-webdriver version.
- A value or element is missing in JavaScript: Pass it through the method’s argument array and access it through the corresponding
arguments[n]index. - A complex JavaScript object converts unexpectedly: The exact PHP representation can depend on the installed php-webdriver and Selenium versions. Check those versions’ behavior rather than assuming every JavaScript object maps to a particular PHP type.
