Visual testing catches unintended changes in a website’s rendered interface by comparing screenshots of meaningful page states with approved reference images. A difference is a signal to review—not an automatic verdict: keep an approved design change by updating its baseline, or retain the old baseline when the change is a bug.
How visual testing works
Applitools Documentation defines visual testing as “a type of regression testing that ensures previously correct screens have not changed unexpectedly.” The practical loop is to exercise a user-visible state, capture a screenshot at a useful checkpoint, compare it with an accepted baseline, inspect the difference, and then either approve the change or fix the defect. Applitools Documentation: Overview of Visual UI Testing
This complements functional tests: a page can still load and its controls can still work while spacing, typography, colors, or component layout have shifted. Visual checks help reveal those rendered changes, but a reviewer still has to decide whether they are intentional.
Choose meaningful states to capture
A single screenshot of an arbitrary page rarely represents the important ways people use a site. Choose checkpoints that correspond to meaningful interface states and journeys: for example, a landing page, a navigation menu after it opens, or a form displaying validation feedback. Capture after the state has been reached, not merely after navigation starts.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Keep each test reproducible: use stable navigation, controlled account and data state, and deterministic content where possible. Playwright recommends testing user-visible behavior and isolating tests so each can run independently with its own state. Playwright Best Practices
Start with Playwright screenshot assertions
For a Playwright Test project, the built-in toHaveScreenshot() assertion is a direct way to create and check visual references. The first run creates reference screenshots; later runs compare new captures against them. See Playwright: Visual comparisons for the supported options and setup details.

- Navigate to the target state. Set up the page and any required data so the same user-visible state is reached on each run.
- Add a screenshot assertion. For example, use
await expect(page).toHaveScreenshot();in a Playwright Test test after the page reaches the state you want to protect. - Generate the reference. Run the test to create its initial screenshot reference, then inspect it to make sure it represents the intended design.
- Run it again under the same conditions. Subsequent runs compare the new screenshot with the stored reference and report differences.
- Review before updating. If a change is intentional and approved, update the reference through your team’s normal review process; if it is a defect, fix the page and keep the prior reference.
Playwright also provides options such as a pixel-difference allowance and a stylesheet applied during capture. Use allowances carefully: they can tolerate small rendering differences, but they can also make small real regressions less visible. A stylesheet can stabilize or hide volatile content; any hidden area is not being visually checked in that run.
Make comparisons repeatable
Keep the rendering environment consistent
Screenshot output can vary with the host operating system, browser version, browser settings, hardware, power source, and headless mode. Keep the operating system and browser versions consistent between reference generation and test runs, and avoid changing capture conditions without understanding how that affects existing references. Playwright documents these sources of variation in its visual comparison guidance.

- Fast and Reliable 85W Charging: Offers high-capacity, speedy charging for laptops up to 85W, so you spend less time tethered to an outlet and more time being productive.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
Control page state and data
Use the same account state, input data, and navigation path for each run. Where practical, replace changing test content with deterministic values. Timestamps, rotating promotions, and frequently changing third-party content can create diffs unrelated to the change you intend to catch.
Handle volatile regions transparently
First consider stabilizing the source of the changing content. If that is not practical, Playwright supports applying a custom stylesheet during screenshot capture—for example, to suppress an iframe that makes the image nondeterministic. Document what the stylesheet excludes and why. Masking or hiding a region reduces noise but also removes that region from visual coverage.

Review differences and baseline updates responsibly
Treat each diff as evidence to inspect in context. Look at the changed pixels, then revisit the journey and interface state that produced them. Ask whether the difference was expected and whether it matches an approved change. Update the reference only after approval. An intentional design or feature change can become the new baseline; a visual defect should be corrected while the old reference remains the comparison target. This review-and-update workflow is described in Applitools’ overview of visual UI testing.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Choose an implementation that fits your team
Native framework assertions and hosted visual-testing services are different workflow choices. The right fit depends on how your team wants to capture, compare, review, and approve screenshots; the available documentation does not establish a universal winner or a neutral cross-tool browser-coverage ranking.
