BrowserStack’s IntelliJ IDEA and Eclipse plugins help connect an existing Java test project to BrowserStack: install the plugin in your IDE, run its project-integration action, choose the framework and required settings, then review the generated browserstack.yml and SDK dependency before running your tests. The exact framework and build-tool instructions vary, so use the matching BrowserStack guide for your project.
What the BrowserStack SDK IDE plugins do
BrowserStack announced its IntelliJ and Eclipse IDE plugins on June 20, 2023, describing them as a way to integrate BrowserStack SDK with Java-based test suites. The documented Automate workflows can add the browserstack-java-sdk dependency to a Maven project and create a browserstack.yml configuration file. The plugin assists with setup; it does not replace your test framework or make every Java project use the same configuration.
BrowserStack’s current integration documentation includes IDE-plugin flows for specific Java frameworks, including TestNG and Selenide. Start with the guide that matches your framework and service: TestNG with Automate or Selenide with Automate. Do not assume that dependency instructions for one framework or build system apply to another.
Before you install
- Have an existing Java automated test project and know its framework, such as TestNG or Selenide.
- Identify the BrowserStack service and workflow you intend to configure. The cited IDE integration guides describe Automate workflows; other services or frameworks may have different instructions.
- Check whether the project uses Maven or Gradle, then open the corresponding framework guide. BrowserStack’s examples and dependency details differ by project setup.
- Have the BrowserStack username and access key required by the selected guide. Treat credentials as secrets: use the secure configuration method intended for your environment rather than committing a real access key to source control.
Install and integrate in IntelliJ IDEA
- Open IntelliJ IDEA’s Settings on Windows or Linux, or Preferences on macOS, and select Plugins. Menu wording and placement can vary by IDE version.
- Search the plugin marketplace for BrowserStack, install the relevant BrowserStack SDK plugin, and restart the IDE if it prompts you to do so.
- Open or select the Java project you want to integrate. From the project context menu, choose the BrowserStack integration action exposed by the plugin.
- Follow the prompts to select the project and test framework, and enter the BrowserStack parameters requested by the workflow. Use the matching BrowserStack guide for framework- and build-specific values.
- Inspect the resulting project changes. In the documented Maven path, the integration adds the
browserstack-java-sdkdependency and generatesbrowserstack.yml. Verify the framework setting, platform capabilities, project or build labels, and credential configuration against your intended run. - Run the test suite using its normal project workflow, as described by the applicable BrowserStack integration guide, and inspect the run in BrowserStack.
Install and integrate in Eclipse
- In Eclipse, open Help → Eclipse Marketplace. Search for BrowserStack and install the relevant BrowserStack SDK plugin.
- Open the Java project, then use its project context menu to launch the BrowserStack integration action.
- Choose the project and framework and provide the BrowserStack parameters requested by the integration flow. Consult the matching BrowserStack guide rather than copying settings from a different framework or build tool.
- Review the files and project changes created by the integration. In the documented Maven workflow, check the added
browserstack-java-sdkdependency and generatedbrowserstack.yml. - Confirm the configuration and credentials, then run the tests through the normal workflow documented for your framework.
Plugin labels and menu locations can change between IDE releases. If the described path is not visible, search the IDE’s plugin manager or marketplace for BrowserStack and follow the current integration guide for your framework.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Review the generated configuration before running
Check the dependency and framework
Confirm that the SDK dependency was added to the intended project and that the framework value in browserstack.yml matches the suite you selected. Dependency snippets are not universal: use the Maven or Gradle instructions in the relevant framework guide if the generated change does not fit the project.
Check platforms and run labels
Review the requested browser or platform capabilities, along with any project and build labels. These values determine how the run is configured and identified; do not leave example values in place if they do not describe your intended run.

Protect credentials
The BrowserStack guides show username and access-key placeholders. Replace them using the secure configuration approach appropriate to your environment, and avoid committing actual credentials. The available documentation does not establish that the plugin stores credentials in any particular way, so verify the resulting configuration yourself.
Know which configuration takes precedence
BrowserStack describes browserstack.yml as the SDK configuration location and says that when the same capability appears both in the test script and YAML configuration, the YAML value takes precedence. Check for duplicate capability settings if a run behaves differently from what the test code suggests. See How BrowserStack SDK works.

What happens when the SDK runs
BrowserStack says the SDK integrates with the test suite at runtime. Its documented capabilities include running across browsers or platforms, parallelization, and Local Testing for applications in lower environments such as development or staging. These are vendor-described SDK capabilities; the exact setup and availability depend on the selected framework and BrowserStack workflow. Follow the applicable guide rather than assuming that installing the IDE plugin alone configures every capability.
Troubleshooting common setup problems
- The plugin or integration action is missing: Confirm that the plugin installation completed in the IDE’s plugin manager or Eclipse Marketplace. Restart the IDE if requested, then open the project context menu again. IDE labels may differ by version.
- The generated dependency does not match the project: Check whether the project uses Maven or Gradle and consult the specific BrowserStack guide for the selected framework. Do not reuse a snippet intended for a different build tool.
- The test framework is not represented correctly: Re-run or review the integration choices and compare the configuration with the matching framework guide. The plugin flow is not evidence that every Java framework has the same setup.
- A capability differs from the value in the test script: Inspect
browserstack.yml. BrowserStack documents YAML precedence when the same capability is specified in both places. - The project contains sample credentials or labels: Replace placeholders and example values with the values appropriate to the run; keep real access keys out of committed source files.
- The guide’s menu names do not match your IDE: Look in IntelliJ’s Settings or Preferences plugin area, or Eclipse’s Marketplace, and use the current BrowserStack framework guide. Menu paths can vary with IDE versions.
Keep these BrowserStack tools distinct
The Java SDK plugins discussed here are not the same as BrowserStack’s VS Code Live extension, which launches Live browser sessions from VS Code. BrowserStack documents that separate workflow at BrowserStack Live integration with Visual Studio Code. Test Companion is another distinct product with its own installation instructions and broader IDE coverage; see the Test Companion installation guide.
