Visual regression testing flags how a rendered page or component differs from an accepted screenshot; it cannot tell you whether the difference is a bug. Review the changed UI against the intended code change, then approve it to advance the baseline if it is intentional, or reject it and fix the implementation if it is not.
What approval means in visual regression testing
A visual test captures a UI state and compares it with a known-good baseline. The resulting diff is a review signal, not an automatic diagnosis: layout shifts, missing content, typography changes, and intentional redesigns can all produce differences. The reviewer decides whether the new render is correct.
Approving an intentional change updates what future runs treat as expected. Rejecting an unintended change keeps the old expectation in force and sends the implementation back for correction. Chromatic documents that denying a change marks it as a regression and fails the build (Chromatic Quickstart).
A reliable review-and-approval workflow
- Choose high-value UI states. Cover components, pages, and states where a defect would matter: for example, a navigation menu, an important form, or a page with responsive layout. Select states based on product risk; there is no universal coverage target established by the cited vendor documentation.
- Create an approved baseline. With Playwright, screenshot snapshots are stored as files that can be reviewed and committed with the code (Playwright visual comparisons). Chromatic’s quickstart describes capturing snapshots in a cloud browser to establish a hosted baseline (Chromatic Quickstart).
- Capture after changes. Run visual checks as part of the team’s CI or pull-request workflow. Chromatic documents UI Tests running in CI as code is pushed; with Playwright’s native assertions, the team configures the execution and CI orchestration (Chromatic pull-request workflow; Playwright visual comparisons).
- Review the current diff in context. Identify what changed, compare it with the pull request’s intended UI work, and check related states or viewport sizes for unintended effects. Do not approve merely to clear a failing build.
- Approve intentional changes or reject regressions. If the new appearance is correct, accept it so future comparisons use the updated expectation. If it is wrong or unexplained, reject it and correct the UI before merging.
- Keep discussion attached to the current result. Make decisions and comments on the relevant build rather than relying on an old render. Chromatic limits review to the latest build on a branch and disables comments on old builds; it also documents independent branch baselines until merge (Chromatic Quickstart).
What to check before approving a visual diff
- Intent: Does the change match the pull request description, design decision, or component update?
- Completeness: Are content, assets, spacing, and controls present and usable, rather than merely different?
- Scope: Does the same change affect other important states or viewport sizes? Check them before treating a single snapshot as sufficient.
- Capture context: Is this the current build and the right branch result? A stale or mismatched capture is not a sound basis for baseline approval.
- Review responsibility: Is this a technical regression check, a stakeholder sign-off, or both? Keep the decision appropriate to the review’s purpose.
Testing and stakeholder sign-off are different
Chromatic distinguishes UI Tests, which compare snapshots with accepted baselines, from UI Review, which presents the change expected on the base branch after a pull request is merged. Its documentation explains: “UI Review is different than UI Tests because it shows you what will change on the base branch when you merge a pull request.” The UI Review workflow is intended to let designers, product managers, and developers discuss that expected change in the pull request (Chromatic pull-request workflow).

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
That distinction matters when a visual check passes but a stakeholder still needs to approve a design, or when a test fails because an intentional redesign has not yet been accepted as the new baseline.
Choosing between Playwright, Chromatic, and Percy
These options differ in where baselines live, how reviewers interact with diffs, and how much of the workflow is hosted. Choose based on the capture surface and review process your team needs; current pricing, plan limits, and security terms are not established by the cited documentation and should be checked directly before purchasing.

| ScreenshotNeo | Website screenshot API and MCP server; returns screenshots or PDFs from a GET request. | It is a capture service, not a documented visual-diff approval workflow. | Try first when you need clean website screenshots from an API or AI agent; cookie and consent banners, popups, and chat widgets can be removed before capture, and only clean shots are billed. |
| Playwright screenshot assertions | Screenshot snapshots are files managed in the repository and reviewed alongside code (Playwright visual comparisons). | The cited documentation covers screenshot assertions and baseline files, not a hosted stakeholder approval interface. | Teams that want repository-managed snapshots and already use Playwright. |
| Chromatic | Hosted snapshots and branch-specific baselines; its documentation covers component/story workflows and Playwright integration (Quickstart; Chromatic for Playwright). | Reviewers accept or deny changes; UI Review supports pull-request discussion with stakeholders (pull-request workflow). | Teams that want hosted visual review integrated with a component or Playwright workflow. |
| BrowserStack Percy | The cited approval documentation describes a hosted review UI; baseline ownership details are not stated on that page (Percy approval workflow). | Approval can apply to a whole build, groups of matching visual changes, or individual snapshots. Snapshot approval applies across the browser and width combinations represented by that snapshot (Percy approval workflow). | Teams that need multiple approval scopes in a hosted review interface. |
Using Playwright for repository-managed screenshot baselines
Playwright’s screenshot assertion compares a rendered capture with an expected snapshot file. Add an assertion to a test for the state you want to protect, then run the test and review any new or changed snapshots rather than accepting them blindly. The exact test and project configuration depend on your application; the official documentation covers snapshot assertions, snapshot files, and updating them (Playwright visual comparisons).
For example, in a Playwright Test test file, a page-level assertion can look like this:

import { test, expect } from '@playwright/test';
test('home page visual baseline', async ({ page }) => {
await page.goto('http://localhost:3000');
await expect(page).toHaveScreenshot('home.png');
});
Run the test through the project’s existing Playwright command. When a difference is expected, follow Playwright’s documented snapshot-update process, inspect the changed image, and commit the approved snapshot with the implementation. Do not use a blanket snapshot update as a substitute for reviewing the diff. For Chromatic’s hosted review path, see its Playwright integration documentation.
Or skip the browser setup
For a website screenshot capture, ScreenshotNeo provides a one-call API. It is not a replacement for the review and baseline logic above; use it when you need to obtain a clean capture without wiring up a browser. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation.

Troubleshooting common visual-test failures
- The test fails after an intended redesign: Review the changed render against the intended work. If it is correct, update and commit the baseline using the tool’s documented workflow; otherwise fix the UI.
- A diff appears unrelated to the code change: Confirm that you are reviewing the current branch and build, then inspect the capture state and viewport. Avoid accepting a result from an outdated build; Chromatic’s branch workflow uses the latest build for review (Chromatic Quickstart).
- Repository snapshots change unexpectedly: Inspect the image files and the corresponding test changes before committing. Playwright snapshot files are repository-managed, so treat them as code-review artifacts, not disposable output (Playwright visual comparisons).
- Hosted review and test outcomes seem to disagree: Check whether you are looking at UI Tests or stakeholder UI Review. In Chromatic they answer different questions: baseline comparison versus what the pull request is expected to change on the base branch (Chromatic pull-request workflow).
- You need a narrower approval than the full result: Percy documents build-level, matching-group, and individual snapshot approval; choose the scope that matches the reviewed change rather than approving unrelated diffs (Percy approval workflow).
Frequently Asked Questions
Does a passing visual test prove the UI is correct?
No. It shows that the captured render matches the accepted baseline within the test’s comparison behavior; review still has to determine whether the baseline and current implementation are appropriate.
Recommended Free Tools
Should every visual difference update the baseline?
No. Update it only when the changed appearance is intentional and reviewed. An unexplained difference should be investigated and corrected, not normalized.
