Cypress can capture screenshots during browser tests, but screenshot capture alone does not detect visual regressions. To find unintended changes, pair Cypress checkpoints with a comparison workflow that checks each image against an accepted baseline. Stabilize the page first, inspect differences, and update a baseline only when the change is intentional.

How Cypress visual testing works

A visual regression check usually follows four stages:

  1. Drive the application to a meaningful page or component state.
  2. Capture a checkpoint with Cypress after the interface and its data have settled.
  3. Compare the image with an accepted baseline using a visual-testing integration or image-diff tool.
  4. Review the result: accept a new baseline for an intended design change, or investigate the difference as a possible defect.

A screenshot difference is evidence to review, not automatically a bug. Cypress documents the capture controls; integrations supply comparison, baseline storage, and review workflows. See the Cypress screenshot API.

Capture stable screenshots with Cypress

Use Cypress’s screenshot command at the point in a test where the rendered state matters. Its options let you control capture behavior, including the captured area, scaling, timers, animations, failure screenshots, and elements to black out. Consult the API documentation for the exact options supported by your installed Cypress version.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Cypress disables timers and CSS animations by default during screenshot capture to reduce visual variation. That does not make every page deterministic: clocks, rotating content, asynchronous data, and other changing DOM content can still produce noisy comparisons. Cypress documents onBeforeScreenshot and onAfterScreenshot callbacks for changing the DOM around a capture—for example, hiding a changing clock before taking the image.

  • Wait for the application state and layout that the test intends to verify; avoid capturing while data or fonts are still changing.
  • Hide or stabilize volatile content, rather than repeatedly accepting baselines that differ only because of a clock or similar element.
  • Use blackout selectors when content should not appear in a screenshot.
  • Keep functional assertions alongside visual checks: an image shows rendered appearance, not whether every interaction or underlying behavior is correct.

Choose page, component, or chart coverage

End-to-end pages and user flows

For a user journey, capture a page after Cypress has driven the application to the intended state. Choose checkpoints that represent important layouts or transitions; a screenshot taken before the state is stable can make the baseline unreliable.

Isolated components

Cypress component testing mounts an individual component in a browser canvas. Tests can set the component’s state and API inputs directly, which is useful for checking variations without navigating through an entire user flow. Cypress describes support for multiple frameworks and development servers; see its component testing documentation.

Charts and graphs

Visual testing can check whether charts and graphs render as expected, a use case Cypress addresses in its FAQ. Ensure the chart has stable input data and rendering before capture. A screenshot can reveal a missing, clipped, or visibly changed chart, but it does not replace assertions about the data or interactions that produce it.

Ways to compare Cypress screenshots

Cypress’s plugin directory includes community image-snapshot and diff extensions as well as hosted products such as Percy, Applitools, and Chromatic. Cypress labels listed extensions as community-owned and not reviewed by Cypress, so check the directory and the project’s own documentation for current compatibility and maintenance before adding one.

Approach What it provides What to weigh
Cypress screenshot API Capture settings and callbacks for managing screenshot timing and content. Whether its capture controls address the page’s unstable or excluded content. Cypress documentation.
Local/community image diff The Cypress directory lists image snapshot and diff plugins. The Image Diff documentation describes pixelmatch-based comparisons, page or element capture, thresholds, and baseline updating. Where baselines are stored, how thresholds are tuned, and the maintenance burden. Verify current compatibility in the Cypress plugin directory and the Image Diff documentation.
Hosted visual review Percy describes centralized snapshot review, approvals, history, and cross-browser rendering. Applitools describes checkpoint and baseline review. Team review needs, browser coverage, service fit, and each vendor’s current setup. These are vendor descriptions, not a neutral performance or price comparison. See Percy’s Cypress workflow and Applitools’ visual testing overview.
Component visual coverage Cypress component testing mounts a component in a browser canvas and supports framework-specific mounting. Whether isolated component states or whole-page user flows are the right level of coverage. See the Cypress component testing documentation.

The cited materials do not establish a neutral, current comparison of prices or performance across these choices. Plugin versions and compatibility can change; check the current project documentation before following version-specific setup steps.

Troubleshoot noisy or unexpected diffs

  • The same test produces different images: look for changing clocks, rotating content, asynchronous data, or layout that has not settled. Stabilize or hide volatile content, and use Cypress’s screenshot callbacks where appropriate.
  • A large portion of the image changes: check that the test reached the same application state and that the capture settings and viewport are consistent. Review the changed image before updating the baseline.
  • A small rendering difference repeatedly fails an image diff: review the comparison tool’s threshold settings. Local Image Diff documentation describes threshold tuning; avoid loosening a threshold so far that meaningful changes disappear.
  • A plugin install or command does not work: check the plugin’s official installation instructions and its current Cypress compatibility. Cypress’s directory identifies extensions as community-owned and not reviewed by Cypress.
  • A changed baseline hides a regression: do not approve every difference automatically. Keep the previous accepted image while investigating changes that were not part of an intended design update.

ScreenshotNeo is a screenshot API and MCP server for developers. It captures a URL as an image or PDF; it is not a Cypress visual-diff or baseline-review system, so use a comparison workflow if you need regression checks. Its API accepts a URL in one GET request:

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for options and response details. Before capture, it accepts cookie or consent banners and removes 60+ known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each of those steps can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and responses indicate page verdict and billing status in headers. Its MCP server gives AI agents tools to take screenshots, get page information, and capture PDFs. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month without a card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 screenshots.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a screenshot diff tell me whether a change is a bug?

No. A diff identifies a visual change; a reviewer or workflow must decide whether it is intentional or a regression.

Does Cypress itself store and review visual baselines?

Cypress documents screenshot capture. Comparison and baseline review are provided by integrations or image-diff tools.
