Intelligent testing can mean two different things: using AI to help test software, or testing software that contains AI. The first can help teams generate test ideas, prioritize regression tests, and analyze failures; the second requires evaluating data, models, and AI behavior as well as ordinary application code. In both cases, AI can assist the work, but its output needs review and evidence. AI-generated tests are not automatically correct, complete, or useful.

What Is Intelligent Testing?

“Intelligent testing” is not a single standardized product category. In software discussions, it usually refers to one of two related practices:

  • AI-assisted testing: using AI, including generative AI, to support parts of the testing process, such as proposing test cases or summarizing failures.
  • Testing AI-based systems: evaluating a product whose behavior depends on machine learning (ML), a large language model (LLM), or another AI component.

The distinction matters. A tool that drafts tests for a conventional web application is not necessarily testing an AI model. And a conventional suite that checks an application’s buttons and API responses does not, by itself, establish that an AI feature behaves safely or reliably across relevant inputs.

ISTQB’s CT-GenAI syllabus addresses applying generative AI in testing. Its CT-AI v2.0 syllabus focuses on testing AI systems, including ML and generative AI. These are separate learning paths for separate problems, not evidence that any AI testing product will improve a team’s results.

How Can AI Improve Software Testing?

AI can offer candidate ideas or analysis that testers can check against requirements, code, logs, and expected behavior. These are potential use cases, not guaranteed improvements in coverage, speed, cost, or defect prevention.

Proposing test cases

A generative AI assistant can turn a requirement or feature description into candidate positive, negative, boundary, and edge-case tests. A tester still needs to verify that the cases reflect the actual requirement, include meaningful assertions, and can distinguish correct behavior from incorrect behavior. A list of steps without a reliable expected result is not a useful test.

Prioritizing regression tests

AI-supported analysis may help teams choose which existing tests to run first or identify redundant tests in a large suite. Treat prioritization as an aid, not a reason to discard coverage: a prediction can miss a regression. Preserve a way to run the broader suite on an appropriate schedule and examine failures rather than assuming unselected tests are safe.

Analyzing failures and reports

AI can summarize test output, group similar defect reports, or suggest possible causes. Check any explanation against reproducible behavior, logs, source code, and domain knowledge. A plausible summary is a lead for investigation, not proof of root cause.

Supporting UI automation

AI features may help draft browser interactions or maintain automation when a user interface changes. Review selectors, assertions, test data, browser and viewport coverage, and repeatability. A test that clicks through a page but does not verify the outcome can pass while the feature is broken.

What would show that it helped?

Set a measurable, local evaluation before adopting an AI-assisted workflow. For example, compare the candidate tests it produces with tests reviewed by your team, or measure whether proposed failure groupings help investigators reach a verified cause. Record the input, prompt or configuration, tool version, human edits, and final test result. The sources cited here do not establish a general percentage improvement in test productivity, coverage, cost, or escaped-defect rates.

How Do You Test an AI System?

AI-based systems can depend on data and behave probabilistically or non-deterministically. That makes a single fixed pass/fail expectation insufficient for some use cases. Define what acceptable behavior means for the product, then test the system and the processes that produce and operate it.

1. Define use-case acceptance criteria

Specify what the AI feature is meant to do, who uses it, what inputs it may receive, and what an acceptable response looks like. Where appropriate, set limits for incorrect, unsafe, or out-of-scope behavior. Choose criteria that match the intended use; an aggregate score alone may conceal failures that matter to a particular user group or scenario.

2. Test input data

Check that data is relevant to the intended task, valid for the system’s input format, and handled appropriately when it is missing, malformed, unusual, or outside expected ranges. Consider privacy, security, and whether evaluation data is suitable for the populations and situations the feature is intended to serve.

3. Test model and feature behavior

Design cases for expected inputs, boundary conditions, errors, and misuse relevant to the feature. For classification, select performance measures appropriate to the task rather than relying on one headline accuracy figure. For an LLM-enabled feature, assess the quality and appropriateness of generated outputs against use-case-specific criteria, including failure cases. ISTQB’s CT-AI v2.0 syllabus covers AI quality characteristics, ML functional performance metrics for classification, and test-case design and execution; CT-GenAI includes evaluating results and considering hallucinations, reasoning errors, bias, privacy, and security.

4. Test the development and operating lifecycle

Evaluate more than the model in isolation. Consider the ML development process, the data and model versions used, changes between releases, and how the feature behaves in its deployed context. Keep enough traceability to reproduce an evaluation: record relevant inputs, configurations, versions, criteria, and results. For generative systems, exploratory testing and red teaming can help expose unexpected behavior, but neither replaces defined acceptance criteria or routine verification.

5. Re-evaluate when conditions change

Changes to data, models, prompts, surrounding software, or user workflows can affect results. Establish what changes trigger a new evaluation and retain the ability to compare results across versions. A test run is evidence about the configuration and cases exercised, not a permanent guarantee about every future input.

What AI Testing Does Not Replace

AI-generated tests and analyses need independent review, validation, and traceability. Generative systems can produce hallucinations or reasoning errors; systems and workflows can also raise bias, privacy, and security concerns. Reviewers should check not just whether a suggested test looks plausible, but whether it is traceable to a requirement, runs repeatably, and checks the right outcome.

AI-specific evaluation also sits alongside conventional software verification. NISTIR 8397 describes 11 recommended software verification techniques, including threat modeling, automated testing, static code scanning, heuristic secret detection, black-box and structural tests, historical test cases, fuzzing, web application scanners where applicable, and checking included code. NIST presents these as minimum recommendations, not a complete verification plan or an AI-testing standard. Teams should select controls appropriate to their software and risk rather than treating a generated test suite as a replacement for established assurance practices.

Accountability for risk selection, acceptance criteria, interpretation, and release decisions remains with the people and organization responsible for the software. The sources discussed here do not establish that AI replaces software testers.

How to Choose an Intelligent Testing Approach

Start with the system and decision you need to evaluate, not a vendor’s broad “AI-powered” label. A conventional application, an ML model, an LLM feature, and a data pipeline may need different tests and evidence.

Evaluation question What to check
What is under test? Identify whether you need to test application code, an ML model, an LLM-enabled feature, input data, or the development pipeline.
Which lifecycle stages are covered? Check whether the approach supports test design, input-data evaluation, model behavior, deployment, and ongoing evaluation as applicable.
Can results be reproduced and traced? Look for recorded test inputs, relevant versions and configurations, measurable criteria, and a clear account of failures.
Does it address relevant risks? Consider security, privacy, robustness, bias or subgroup performance, and misuse or adversarial behavior where applicable.
Will it fit operationally? Assess integration with the existing CI and test stack, supported interfaces, access controls, data handling, team skills, and cost.
What supports the claims? Separate syllabus descriptions and vendor-stated features from independent evidence that a tool works for your stack and test corpus.

Examples of different approaches

Existing automated tests with AI assistance: a team may use AI features to draft cases, analyze failures, or support UI automation while keeping its existing test runner, assertions, and review controls.

AI evaluation platforms: NIST describes Dioptra as an open-source, modular, microservice-based platform for testing trustworthy AI model characteristics and creating reproducible, trackable, reusable AI workflows. Check its current documentation and implementation requirements against your intended evaluation.

Commercial testing platforms: Katalon’s official product page describes AI-supported requirement analysis, test-case generation, autonomous test running, bug reporting, report generation, and root-cause analysis. Those are vendor-described capabilities, not independent evidence of performance for a particular application. Validate the supported workflow, data handling, and results with your own test corpus before relying on them.

Guidance and Learning References

  • ISTQB CT-AI v2.0 focuses on testing AI systems, including input-data testing, model testing, and ML development testing. The ISTQB page says CTFL is a prerequisite. It also states that the English CT-AI v1.0 certification remains available through April 21, 2027, and non-English versions through October 21, 2027; exam availability and arrangements can change, so check ISTQB’s current certification information before booking.
  • ISTQB CT-GenAI covers applying generative AI in testing, including prompting, evaluating and refining results, hallucinations, reasoning errors, bias, privacy and security, adoption, and standards and regulation.
  • NIST AI Risk Management Framework (AI RMF) is voluntary, not a mandatory regulation. NIST says it is intended to help incorporate trustworthiness considerations into AI design, development, use, and evaluation, and that RMF 1.0 is being revised. NIST dates its Generative AI Profile to July 26, 2024. The framework is risk-management guidance, not a detailed software test plan.
  • NIST AI Resource Center provides guidance and technical documents, including resources on testing, evaluation, verification, and validation (TEVV) of AI.

Capturing UI Evidence for Tests

For a UI test, a screenshot can provide evidence of what the page rendered at a particular point. A screenshot alone does not verify the underlying behavior: pair it with assertions, test data, and a repeatable browser or capture configuration. If the goal is to capture a page as a visitor would see it, account for consent banners, popups, chat widgets, page load failures, and bot checks; these can affect the image or make a capture unusable.

ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server, not an AI testing platform. It can supply a screenshot or PDF to a UI-testing workflow; it does not replace test assertions or AI model evaluation. A GET request returns PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF output. For example, this cURL request saves a WebP capture of Stripe; replace the URL with the page you need to capture. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options.

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie or consent banners and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each step can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients. The Free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 screenshots. Sign up for 1,000 free screenshots a month, with no card required.
