Manage test cases in BrowserStack Test Management by creating a project for the application or feature, organizing its cases into folders, choosing a suitable case template, and recording clear execution details and expected results. Then keep the repository useful with metadata, reusable steps, imports, and regular review. The steps below follow BrowserStack’s documented workflow; interface details can change, so check the linked documentation while setting up.
1. Set up a project and folder structure
BrowserStack describes a project as the top-level container for related test cases, test runs, test plans, reports, and project insights. Start with a project name and description that make its scope clear—for example, the application, service, or feature the team is testing. See BrowserStack’s project documentation for current details.
Within the project, create folders and subfolders around meaningful product areas or testing boundaries. A structure such as “Checkout” with subfolders for “Payments” and “Promotions” can make cases easier to browse, but folders are only navigation. Use fields such as tags, type, owner, priority, state, and automation status when cases need to be filtered or triaged across folders.
2. Choose a test case template
BrowserStack documents three templates: Text, Steps, and Gherkin (BDD). Choose based on how the team needs to express and execute the scenario.

| Template | Use it when | How to structure the case |
|---|---|---|
| Text | The scenario is simple and does not need separately recorded actions and outcomes. | Describe the scenario and its expected result clearly in text. |
| Steps | Another tester needs an explicit sequence to follow, with outcomes checked along the way. | Record individual actions and their corresponding expected outcomes. |
| Gherkin (BDD) | The team uses Given-When-Then scenarios to express behavior. | Write one scenario per test case, as BrowserStack’s guide specifies; create separate cases for distinct scenarios. |
These templates represent different authoring conventions, not a universal ranking. Consider how structured the scenario is, whether expected results belong at the case or step level, and whether the team uses BDD before choosing.
3. Write an executable, maintainable case
A test case should let someone other than its author understand what to test and what success looks like. BrowserStack’s “Manage test cases” documentation describes test cases as “the core of the testing process, describing specific scenarios to validate application functionality.” Use a title that identifies the behavior or condition under test, then provide the details that make execution unambiguous.

- Scenario: State the behavior or condition being validated.
- Preconditions: Include required account state, data, permissions, or setup where relevant.
- Steps and expected results: Match the chosen template. In a Steps case, pair each action with its expected outcome; in a Text or Gherkin case, keep the behavior and outcome clear in the selected format.
- Metadata: Add relevant owner, priority, type, automation status, tags, linked requirements, estimate, and state so cases can be found and acted on.
Use only metadata that helps the team make decisions. Consistent field values and naming make filtering more useful; an exhaustive set of labels that nobody maintains adds overhead rather than clarity. See BrowserStack’s create-a-test-case guide for the current authoring options.
4. Maintain the repository after creation
Case management is ongoing work. BrowserStack documents editing, deleting, copying, moving, exporting, filtering, shared steps, column preferences, and archiving or restoring cases. Establish lightweight review habits so changes in the product do not leave the repository misleading.

For the current management controls, see BrowserStack’s manage-test-cases documentation.
5. Import existing test cases
BrowserStack’s create-case documentation describes importing projects from TestRail or Zephyr Scale, as well as importing CSV data into an existing project. The product overview also describes quick imports, Jira integration, dashboards, report uploads, and unified manual or automated test runs. Import availability and the exact mapping can depend on the workflow and account configuration, so check the current instructions before preparing a migration.

- Identify the source format and decide which projects or cases should move.
- Review the current import guide and confirm required columns and field mappings before transforming data.
- Check that case titles, steps, expected results, tags, ownership, and other relevant metadata map as intended.
- After import, inspect representative cases and test the team’s filters and folder navigation before treating the migration as complete.
For CSV-specific steps, consult BrowserStack’s CSV import guide. Do not assume that a field in the source system will map automatically to a BrowserStack field without checking the current instructions.
6. Use the API for repeatable administration
Teams that generate or maintain cases programmatically can use BrowserStack’s API to list and create cases, including bulk creation. The documented case-creation endpoint requires project and folder identifiers. The API reference says a bulk request accepts 1 to 10,000 cases, and requests over 30 are asynchronous; confirm the live reference before building around those limits or response behavior.

Keep API-created cases aligned with the same conventions as manually authored ones: select the correct project and folder, use the expected template and field structure, and include metadata the team depends on for filtering. See the BrowserStack test-case API reference for endpoint details and current request formats.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.7. Keep case management distinct from test execution
A case repository describes what to validate and how; test runs record execution. BrowserStack presents test runs, automated reporting, and related workflows alongside test case management, but the exact integration behavior depends on current documentation and account configuration. Define which fields belong in the reusable case and which information belongs to a particular run, then confirm the team’s execution workflow in BrowserStack’s manual test runs documentation.
8. Troubleshoot common repository problems
- Cases are hard to find: Use meaningful folders for navigation and consistent tags, types, owners, priorities, states, or automation status for filtering. Do not rely on folder names to carry every useful attribute.
- Different testers interpret a case differently: Clarify preconditions, actions, and expected outcomes. If the scenario needs step-by-step checks, use the Steps template rather than compressing the procedure into ambiguous prose.
- A Gherkin case covers several behaviors: Split distinct scenarios into separate cases; BrowserStack documents one scenario per Gherkin case.
- Similar cases are drifting apart: Review whether repeated procedures should use shared steps, then update the affected cases when the common procedure changes.
- An import is missing or mis-mapping fields: Recheck the current source-specific or CSV import guidance, required columns, and mappings. Verify a few imported cases before importing or relying on the full set.
- Bulk API work does not behave synchronously: Check the current API reference. BrowserStack documents requests over 30 cases as asynchronous, so do not assume the response represents completed case creation.
- Archived cases are not visible among active work: Review the archive and restore controls if a retained case needs to return to active use.
BrowserStack performance claims
BrowserStack’s all-features marketing page displays claims of 90% faster test case creation, 50% improved test coverage, 1,000+ migrations, and test-data import in under 24 hours. These are BrowserStack marketing claims published in 2026; the surfaced page does not provide methodology for independently evaluating them. They should not be treated as guaranteed results for a particular team or migration: BrowserStack Test Management features.
