To run Selenium 4 tests on BrowserStack Automate, connect your test project to BrowserStack, provide your account credentials securely, select the remote browser and operating system, and run the suite using its usual test command. For Java with Maven, BrowserStack’s getting-started guide lists JDK 11+, Maven 3.6+, and Selenium 4.23+ using W3C capabilities; those prerequisites apply to that Java/Maven route, not every language. The setup below distinguishes the documented SDK workflow from a direct remote-WebDriver setup, explains local-app access, and shows how to diagnose common configuration problems.

Choose a BrowserStack setup route

BrowserStack documents three ways to get started: run a sample build, integrate an existing test suite, or test a local app. A sample project is useful for learning the connection and dashboard flow; for a real test suite, integrate the project you already run locally. The exact installation and test command depend on your language and build tool. BrowserStack Selenium get-started guide

  • SDK-managed setup: Install the BrowserStack SDK for your language, configure a browserstack.yml file, and execute your normal test command. This is the documented Java and Python onboarding route covered here.
  • Direct remote session: Configure Selenium to connect to BrowserStack’s remote WebDriver endpoint and pass the required authentication and platform capabilities yourself. Use BrowserStack’s current language-specific documentation for the precise endpoint, capability names, and code; the documentation covered here does not establish a complete current direct-session example to copy verbatim.

Before committing to either route, check that your chosen language and framework are supported by the current BrowserStack integration guide and that the target browser/OS combination is available in its capability catalog.

Prepare credentials and configuration

Keep the access key out of source control

Automate sessions require a BrowserStack username and access key. Store them in environment variables or your team’s secret manager, not in a committed test file. The Python integration guide specifically describes environment-variable configuration; Java’s documentation also discusses credentials in the project’s BrowserStack configuration. In a CI environment, add the credentials as protected secret variables and make them available to the test process. Do not print their values in logs. If a key has been exposed in a repository or build log, rotate it in BrowserStack and update the secret store.

Use browserstack.yml for SDK settings

In the documented SDK workflow, create browserstack.yml at the project root. It holds BrowserStack-specific settings, including credentials and the target platform list. BrowserStack describes capabilities as key-value pairs that configure a cloud-grid session; use its current capability reference to check exact supported values rather than relying on examples that may have aged. When the same capability is set both in your test script and in browserstack.yml, BrowserStack says the configuration-file value takes precedence. If a session uses an unexpected browser, OS, or other setting, inspect the YAML for a duplicate value before changing the test code. SDK configuration documentation

Run the documented Java Maven SDK workflow

Check the Java-specific prerequisites

BrowserStack’s Java getting-started page lists JDK 11 or later, Maven 3.6 or later, and Selenium 4.23 or later using W3C capabilities. These are requirements stated for that Java/Maven path; do not apply them automatically to Python or another build system. Confirm the current Java SDK installation instructions and dependency version before starting, since SDK versions can change. Java Maven getting-started guide

Configure, then run the project

  1. Install the BrowserStack Java SDK using the current instructions for your project’s build tool.
  2. Add browserstack.yml to the project root and configure the credentials and platform combinations. Keep secret values in environment variables or another secret store rather than checking them into version control.
  3. Confirm that the test suite runs locally and that its normal Maven command selects the tests you intend to execute.
  4. Run that same Maven test command with the BrowserStack SDK integration configured. The SDK connects the test execution to the selected remote platforms.
  5. Open the Automate dashboard and inspect the resulting build and sessions. BrowserStack’s getting-started flow includes dashboard results for sample and integrated runs. Getting-started workflow

The Java guide supports the SDK and YAML configuration approach, but a complete direct WebDriver implementation can vary with current client libraries and capability names. For that route, follow BrowserStack’s current Java integration and capability documentation rather than treating a conceptual configuration example as tested copy-and-paste code. Run the documented Python SDK workflow

Install the project and SDK dependencies

BrowserStack’s Python onboarding assumes Python 3 and pip, and provides a sample-project and dependency setup. For an existing project, follow its Python integration guide to install the BrowserStack Python SDK, supply credentials through environment variables, run the setup process, and create browserstack.yml. Use the guide’s current commands and dependency versions rather than copying a version from an older tutorial. Python onboarding and integration guide

Check platform coverage before relying on the SDK

The cited Python SDK integration page describes support for Chrome on desktop and Android in its documented configuration. That page alone does not establish support for every browser or operating system. If your matrix needs other platforms, verify that the current BrowserStack Python SDK documentation supports them or choose another officially documented integration method.

  1. Set the BrowserStack username and access key in the environment used to run tests.
  2. Install and configure the Python SDK according to the current integration guide.
  3. Put the desired platform and BrowserStack settings in browserstack.yml.
  4. Run the project’s normal test command and review the sessions in Automate.

Select platforms and configure parallel or local runs

A platform entry specifies the browser and operating-system combination for a remote session. Choose combinations from the current capabilities catalog, and make the matrix only as broad as your test goal requires. BrowserStack’s SDK documentation also covers cross-browser platform configuration, parallelization, and Local Testing; available options and names can vary by SDK and version. For parallel execution, confirm that the suite and test framework can safely run tests concurrently. A larger platform matrix and more parallel sessions can increase the number of simultaneous remote sessions your build requests, so align the configuration with the execution capacity and plan available to your team. The documentation cited here does not establish a particular concurrency limit or price for a given account.

Test localhost, staging, or an internal application

A remote browser cannot automatically reach a service bound to your laptop’s localhost or an inaccessible private network. For a local, staging, or internally hosted target, establish a BrowserStack Local connection and configure the session with the documented local capability. Both pieces matter: the tunnel must be running, and the remote session must be configured to use it. BrowserStack Local Testing guide

  1. Start BrowserStack Local using the current language-binding or command-line setup for your environment.
  2. Set the Local Testing capability in the SDK configuration or session capabilities, as appropriate to your integration.
  3. Use the application URL reachable through that tunnel in the test.
  4. Keep the tunnel alive for the duration of the test run, then close it when the run is complete.

If the browser session starts but the application does not load, first check that the tunnel is connected, the local capability is enabled, and the URL and port are correct from the machine running the tunnel.

Troubleshoot common setup failures

Symptom Likely cause What to check
Authentication fails or the session is rejected The username or access key is missing, incorrect, or unavailable to the process. Verify the secret variable names and values in the test environment, without printing the key in logs. Confirm that the SDK is reading the expected configuration.
The session runs on the wrong platform A platform entry is incorrect, unsupported, or overridden by a duplicate YAML setting. Validate the browser/OS combination in the current capability catalog. Check browserstack.yml because its value takes precedence over a duplicate script capability.
The test command runs locally instead of on Automate The SDK integration was not installed or initialized for the project, or the test command bypasses the expected configuration. Revisit the language-specific SDK setup, ensure the YAML file is at the documented project location, and run the project command through the documented integration path.
Python configuration does not offer the expected browser The documented Python SDK configuration may not cover that platform. Check the current Python integration support statement and capability catalog; the cited integration page describes Chrome on desktop and Android, not universal platform coverage.
A private app times out or is unreachable The BrowserStack Local tunnel may not be running, or the session may not have the local capability enabled. Start the tunnel, enable local for the session, and verify the target URL and port from the tunnel host.
A configuration change appears to have no effect The same capability is set in both the script and YAML, and the YAML value wins. Remove or update the duplicate setting in browserstack.yml, then rerun the test.

Operational considerations

  • Version drift: Selenium, language SDKs, and supported browser platforms change independently. Check the current language-specific guide and capability catalog when upgrading the project.
  • Build time: Remote sessions add network and cloud-grid execution to a local test workflow. Start with a small platform matrix while validating integration, then expand it to the combinations your release process actually needs.
  • Reliability: Keep credentials, SDK configuration, and Local Testing tunnel lifecycle explicit in CI. Record the Automate build/session identifiers in logs so a failing run can be located in the dashboard without exposing secrets.
  • Cost: The sources cited here do not establish your account’s current pricing or concurrency allowance. Check the applicable BrowserStack plan and usage controls before scaling platform combinations or parallel execution.
