To handle cookies in Selenium WebDriver, first navigate to a page on the cookie’s domain; then use your language binding’s add, get, or delete cookie methods in the current browsing context. In Python, the core methods are add_cookie(), get_cookie(), get_cookies(), delete_cookie(), and delete_all_cookies().
Why you must open the cookie’s domain first
WebDriver’s cookie commands apply to the current browsing context. Navigate to a page on the domain for which the cookie is valid before adding or inspecting it. Selenium’s guide states: “First of all, you need to be on the domain that the cookie will be valid for.” Selenium: Working with cookies
If the homepage is slow, Selenium’s guide notes that you can navigate to a smaller page on the same site before adding the cookie. Choose a URL whose domain matches the intended cookie scope.
Add a cookie in Python
The following examples use Selenium’s documented Python API. The Python API reference cited here is for Selenium 4.50.0; check the documentation for the Selenium version installed in your project if signatures or accepted fields differ.

Add a cookie using a dictionary with a name and value:
driver.get("https://example.com/") driver.add_cookie({"name": "key", "value": "value"}) -
Use the site or test flow that depends on the cookie. If you need to confirm it was added, retrieve it by name or inspect the full cookie set.

Replace the example URL, cookie name, and value with those required by your test. The sample shows the basic name-and-value form; include additional attributes only when your test and the target site require them.
Inspect cookies in the current context
Retrieve one cookie by name
cookie = driver.get_cookie("foo")
print(cookie)Use this when you want to inspect a particular cookie. Check the returned value in your test rather than assuming the cookie exists.
Retrieve all cookies
cookies = driver.get_cookies()
print(cookies)Use get_cookies() when the test needs to examine the set of cookies available in the current browsing context.

Delete cookies
Delete one cookie by name
driver.delete_cookie("test1")Use the name of the cookie you intend to remove.
Delete every cookie in the current context
driver.delete_all_cookies()This clears every cookie in the current context, so use it only when the test intends to reset the entire cookie set rather than remove one entry.
Cookie attributes beyond name and value
Selenium’s documentation includes cookie fields or builder options such as path, secure, and sameSite. Its Python examples show sameSite values Strict and Lax. The exact accepted fields and syntax depend on the language binding and browser; consult the official example or API reference for the binding and version in your project before relying on a particular combination.

Java places cookie operations on the driver’s management interface. Selenium’s guide shows adding a cookie with driver.manage().addCookie(new Cookie("key", "value")) and retrieving the set with driver.manage().getCookies(). Do not copy Python method names or argument shapes directly into Java; use the examples for your binding and installed version.

Troubleshooting cookie handling

Adding a cookie fails: Confirm that the browser is on a page in the cookie’s valid domain before calling the add method.

The cookie is not in the result: Check that you are inspecting the intended browsing context and that the cookie name is correct. Use
get_cookies()to inspect the set rather than checking only one name. -
Attribute syntax is rejected: Verify the field names and accepted values for your Selenium language binding and version. Documentation examples do not establish identical signatures across bindings or browser behavior.

A reset removes more state than intended: Replace
delete_all_cookies()withdelete_cookie("name")when the test should remove only one cookie.
