Windows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallOutdated Drivers Are Slowing You Down
One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchTest autofocus at the moment it is supposed to happen: when a page or screen loads, a dialog opens, or a user action changes the interface. Assert both where focus ends up and whether keyboard users can continue operating the interface predictably. Autofocus may come from HTML’s autofocus attribute or a programmatic call such as JavaScript focus(), so cover both paths where your application uses them.
What an autofocus test should prove
A useful test checks a change in focus, not just that a control can receive focus. First identify the triggering state or action; then verify the intended focus target and the keyboard experience that follows. Also test states where focus should not be moved automatically.
- Timing: focus is correct after the page or screen loads, a dialog opens, or the relevant action completes.
- Destination: focus lands on the intended element—or remains in normal sequential order when no automatic move is intended.
- Keyboard behavior: focus is visible, Tab order is meaningful, and focus alone does not unexpectedly change context or submit a form.
- Return path: after a dialog closes, keyboard navigation can return to its invoking control.
The WP Accessibility Knowledge Base recommends loading a page and checking that keyboard and visible focus is not automatically set through either the autofocus attribute or JavaScript assignment: WP Accessibility Knowledge Base guidance.
Build a test around states and transitions
- Set up the initial state. Load or render the page or screen in the state being tested. Include a case where focus should not be moved, not only cases with intentional autofocus.
- Trigger the event. For initial autofocus, load the view. For a dialog, activate the control that opens it. For other programmatic focus, perform the user action that causes the state change.
- Assert focus at the correct time. Check after the triggering event has taken effect, rather than asserting only that the target is focusable. On the web, inspect the active element. For a dialog, also test focus after closing.
- Exercise the keyboard. Use keyboard input, not pointer interaction alone. Check that the focus indicator is visible and that navigation order remains understandable.
- Check for unwanted side effects. Focusing a control by itself should not unexpectedly open a new window, move focus elsewhere, or submit a form.
- Repeat for relevant paths. If the application can focus a control through either an HTML attribute or code, include the mechanisms used by the application in the tests.
Use assertions suited to the platform
The shared test plan is portable; the APIs for causing input and observing focus are not. The following sources support these platform approaches, but do not prescribe one universal assertion recipe.

| Platform | Trigger and observe | Important consideration |
|---|---|---|
| Web | Load the page or trigger the relevant UI transition, then inspect the active element and test keyboard navigation. | Account for both the HTML autofocus attribute and JavaScript focus() where used. Keep focus visible and test keyboard-navigable components. web.dev focus guidance |
| Android Compose | Use focus-state assertions and simulated key input, including Tab and Shift+Tab. | Compose tests start in touch mode by default. Set or account for input mode when testing keyboard behavior. Android Compose testing documentation |
| Apple UI automation | Use XCTest with XCUIAutomation to interact with the app and inspect UI state. | The cited documentation supports UI interaction and state inspection, but does not provide an autofocus-specific assertion recipe. Choose a query and assertion appropriate to the app’s focusable element and accessibility setup. Apple XCTest UI testing documentation |
Cover the important cases
| Scenario | What to verify |
|---|---|
| Page or screen loads without intended autofocus | Focus is not unexpectedly moved to a control; visible focus and keyboard navigation remain predictable. |
| Dialog opens | Focus moves to the appropriate element inside the dialog. |
| Dialog closes | The user can resume keyboard navigation from the invoking control. |
| Keyboard navigation | The focus indicator remains visible and the sequence is meaningful. |
| Control receives focus | Focus alone does not unexpectedly launch a window, move focus to another component, or submit a form. |
| Compose keyboard test | The expected focused or not-focused state holds, and Tab or Shift+Tab input is exercised in an appropriate input mode. |
Automated assertions do not replace human judgment for every accessibility question. Microsoft recommends manual keyboard and screen-reader checks where human judgment is needed; use those checks to supplement the automated cases. Microsoft accessibility testing guidance

Does an autofocus test need to check both the HTML attribute and JavaScript?
Include both mechanisms if your application uses both; the assertion should verify the resulting focus behavior, regardless of how it was assigned.

Can an automated UI test confirm screen-reader behavior?
The cited guidance calls for manual keyboard and screen-reader checks where human judgment is needed, so automation should be supplemented rather than treated as a complete substitute.
