Use BrowserStack’s unified SDK route to run functional tests on BrowserStack Automate and connect them to Percy visual tests in the same pipeline. Create a Percy Web App project, configure browserstack.yml with the matching project name and Percy settings, choose automatic or manual snapshot capture, then run the suite and review the Percy build. Exact install commands and snapshot calls vary by language and framework, so follow the official guide for your stack.

Check framework support before configuring Percy

First confirm that your language and test framework are supported by the BrowserStack SDK. BrowserStack lists end-to-end frameworks such as WebdriverIO, Java test frameworks, and NUnit, but coverage can change. Check the current SDK framework coverage before choosing an integration path.

The SDK is the natural route when you want functional execution on Automate and Percy visual testing coordinated through one configuration. Do not assume one install command or screenshot API works across frameworks: use the install and test instructions for your language in BrowserStack’s Percy SDK integration guide.

Create the Percy project and match its name

  1. In Percy, create a Web App project and select the BrowserStack SDK / Automate integration route presented for your project.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
    • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
    • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
    • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
    • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
    • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  2. Choose a stable project name. BrowserStack’s project setup guide describes using projectName in configuration to create or associate the project. Use the same name in the Percy project and the BrowserStack configuration.

  3. Open the project’s setup instructions and confirm the current UI labels and project connection before running the suite. BrowserStack’s Create a project guide covers project type, naming, and configuration.

Configure BrowserStack Automate and Percy

In the project’s browserstack.yml, enable Automate and Percy, set the project name to the Percy project’s name, and select a capture mode. A minimal illustration of the relevant settings is:

browserstackAutomation: true
percy: true
projectName: "your-percy-project-name"
percyCaptureMode: "auto"

This shows the settings to align, not a complete universal configuration: the required BrowserStack credentials, framework settings, and any other fields depend on your SDK and test framework. Keep access credentials in environment variables or your team’s secret manager; do not commit tokens to the repository. Refer to BrowserStack’s project configuration guidance and the framework-specific setup page for the complete file format.

Choose automatic or manual snapshot capture

Mode How it works Use it when
auto Captures snapshots at supported predefined events. You want broad, lower-touch capture without adding explicit checkpoints throughout the tests.
manual You invoke a framework-supported snapshot method at chosen points. You need snapshots only after a specific action or at a meaningful application state.

For manual capture, BrowserStack gives PercySDK.screenshot(driver, name) as an example. The exact class, method, imports, and arguments depend on the SDK and language; adapt the call from the framework’s official guide rather than copying it as universal code. In either mode, ensure the browser is at the intended state before capture—for example, after navigation and the interactions that reveal the UI you want reviewed.

BrowserStack’s integration documentation explains the automatic and manual capture options. Its integration-options guide also describes when direct Percy SDK control may fit better.

Run the test suite and review the Percy build

  1. Run tests using the command specified for your framework’s BrowserStack SDK setup. There is no single cross-framework command to substitute safely.

  2. Open the resulting Percy build and inspect its snapshots and highlighted visual changes. A functionally passing test does not establish that a visual change is acceptable.

  3. Approve intended snapshot changes or the build through Percy’s review workflow. When repository integration is configured, approval can update pull-request or commit status.

Percy builds are review artifacts, not just a pass/fail signal. See BrowserStack’s Visual Testing with Percy guide for build review, approvals, and project organization.

Handle parallel test execution and build finalization

Workers distributed across machines or containers

When test shards run on separate machines or containers, group their snapshots into the same Percy build using the documented --parallel flow. Finalize the build only after every worker has finished; otherwise the build can remain in “Receiving” instead of becoming a complete review artifact.

Processes parallelized on one machine

For processes running in parallel on a single machine, Percy documents a shared Percy server approach. Start the shared server for the tests and stop it only after all test processes exit. Follow the exact commands and framework-specific options in BrowserStack’s parallel test suites guide.

Choose the SDK route that fits the suite

Route Best fit Trade-off
BrowserStack SDK Teams that want functional tests on Automate and Percy visual tests coordinated in one pipeline and configuration. Confirm the framework is supported and that the unified route exposes the controls your suite needs.
Percy SDK Teams that need direct Percy controls, such as DOM transformations, responsive snapshots, or advanced Percy configuration. It is a distinct integration choice from the unified BrowserStack SDK workflow; verify framework compatibility and how the team will run browser tests.

BrowserStack’s integration options distinguish these routes and also describe Automate versus Percy browser environments. Choose based on the framework and required capabilities, rather than assuming both SDKs provide identical controls.

Troubleshoot common setup problems

  • No Percy project or snapshots appear: Check that percy: true is enabled, Automate is enabled, and projectName matches the intended Percy project. Confirm that the test run uses the configuration file you edited.

  • The framework setup command or screenshot call does not work: The install command and API vary by language and test framework. Use the current official setup guide for that exact stack; do not transplant a call from another SDK or language.

  • Snapshots capture the wrong state: In manual mode, move the capture to the checkpoint after the relevant navigation or interaction, and use the framework’s documented wait or synchronization mechanism before taking the snapshot. In automatic mode, check which predefined events your supported integration captures.
