For browser tests, first decide whether you need to test the login screen or merely start the application in an authenticated state. Use Playwright’s saved storage state for the latter, but isolate accounts when parallel tests change overlapping server-side data. Treat saved state as a credential. OAuth security for an application running in the browser is a separate design question: current browser-app guidance favors Authorization Code with PKCE, rejects the Implicit flow, and asks teams to consider a Backend-for-Frontend (BFF).
Choose the right authentication approach for the job
| What you need to test | Practical approach | Key consideration |
|---|---|---|
| The login experience itself | Run the test through the login UI. | Do not rely on saved state to test whether the login flow works. Third-party identity-provider behavior and policies are not established here; avoid assuming a provider’s sign-in flow will remain automatable. |
| Application behavior after sign-in | Authenticate in a setup step, save the resulting Playwright storage state, then load it in test contexts. | This avoids repeating login while keeping browser contexts isolated. It is suitable only when tests can safely share the same account state. |
| Parallel tests that change overlapping server-side data | Provision different test accounts for the tests or workers that could interfere. | Separate browser contexts do not prevent conflicts in shared server-side account data. |
| Security design for an SPA or other browser-based application | Make an OAuth architecture decision independently of test setup. | RFC 10017, dated August 2026, recommends Authorization Code with PKCE, rejects Implicit flow, and asks implementers to consider a BFF. |
Playwright’s authentication guidance describes the setup-project and storage-state pattern for tests that can share an account safely. Its live documentation was reviewed on October 3, 2026; it does not list a publication date. Playwright: Authentication
Reuse authenticated state with Playwright
Use this pattern for tests that need to begin signed in, rather than repeatedly exercise the login UI. The setup step signs in once and saves state; test contexts load that state while remaining isolated from one another.
1. Keep the generated state out of version control
Use a dedicated directory such as playwright/.auth and add it to .gitignore. Do not commit the state file, including to a private repository. Playwright warns: “The browser state file may contain sensitive cookies and headers that could be used to impersonate you or your test account.” Apply the same caution to local copies and CI artifacts: restrict access and retention because the file may enable account impersonation.

2. Authenticate in a setup project
In the setup test, use the application’s login UI to establish the intended test account session, then call Playwright’s storage-state save API on the authenticated browser context. Configure the main test project to depend on the setup project and load the saved state with its storageState setting. The exact selectors, URLs, and login steps depend on the application; use its supported test environment and account rather than assuming a third-party sign-in flow can be scripted reliably. See the Playwright authentication guide for current configuration and API details.
3. Confirm what actually carries authentication
Do not assume every application stores its signed-in state in the same place. Playwright’s documented authentication state can include cookies, local storage, and IndexedDB; WebAuthn/passkey state may also be relevant to an application’s flow. Session storage is a special case: it is not automatically included in the ordinary saved storage state and requires explicit, domain-specific save and restore handling.

- Check whether the app’s session is represented by cookies, local storage, or IndexedDB.
- If authentication depends on session storage, implement and verify an explicit restore step for the right origin.
- If a flow involves a passkey, test the required WebAuthn behavior rather than assuming a saved cookie reproduces it.
Handle parallelism and browser isolation
Playwright browser contexts are isolated, non-persistent contexts, and its browser-context APIs include cookie operations. That isolation is useful for tests, but it does not make shared server-side records independent. If two workers edit the same account, project, or other overlapping data, their requests can still race or invalidate each other.
- For tests that only read shared account data or otherwise do not interfere, a shared authenticated state can be appropriate.
- For tests that make overlapping server-side changes, create separate test accounts so parallel runs do not collide.
- Keep per-test browser contexts isolated even when they load the same saved state.
See Playwright: Browser contexts for the context model and BrowserContext API for documented browser-context operations.

Keep OAuth architecture separate from test authentication
Reusing a test account’s approved state is a test setup technique; it does not determine how your production browser application should handle OAuth tokens. RFC 10017, dated August 2026, addresses browser-based application security and recommends Authorization Code with PKCE, rejects the Implicit flow, and asks implementers to consider a Backend-for-Frontend (BFF) design. A BFF can keep tokens out of browser code. The RFC notes that browser code cannot securely hold a client secret.

Troubleshoot common failures
- A test starts signed out: Confirm the setup project ran, the saved state path matches the test project configuration, and the authentication mechanism is included. If the application relies on session storage, add explicit save-and-restore handling.
- One parallel run logs another out or sees unexpected data: The workers may share server-side account state. Use separate accounts for tests that modify overlapping data.
- A state file works locally but fails in CI: Check that the setup step ran in CI and that the state artifact is available at the configured path. Avoid exposing that artifact broadly; it may contain impersonation-capable cookies or headers.
- A passkey-based flow is not reproduced by the state file: Verify whether the test needs to exercise WebAuthn itself. Do not assume storage-state restoration covers a passkey interaction.
- A third-party sign-in flow becomes unreliable: The reviewed sources do not establish the automation rules or future behavior of any individual identity provider. Prefer a supported test identity path where available, and keep login-flow tests distinct from tests that only need an authenticated starting state.
Or skip the browser setup
If the task is capturing a page rather than testing an authenticated workflow, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server for developers. A single GET request can return a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF; it is not a replacement for exercising an application’s login UI or validating authenticated browser behavior.
For example, this cURL request captures a public URL as WebP:

Frequently Asked Questions
Can Playwright reuse an authenticated session without logging in for every test?
Yes. Authenticate in a setup step, save storage state, and load it in tests that only need to start signed in.
Does Playwright automatically save session storage?
No. Session storage needs explicit save-and-restore handling; it is domain-specific.
Is saved Playwright authentication state safe to commit to a private repository?
No. It can contain sensitive cookies and headers that could impersonate the test account, so keep it out of version control.
