Deploy Browserless Enterprise by pulling its private Docker image, activating it with your Enterprise license key, and exposing the service on port 3000. For production, pin an image version, configure a separate API token, allocate adequate shared memory, and tune concurrency and queue limits to your workload. The license key (KEY) and API authentication token (TOKEN) do different jobs: one activates Enterprise features; the other authenticates client requests.
What you need before deploying
- Docker installed on the machine or infrastructure that will run Browserless Enterprise.
- A Browserless Enterprise license key.
- Registry credentials from Browserless to pull the private image. These credentials are separate from the runtime license key.
Browserless documents support for ARM64 and AMD64. Its Enterprise image is hosted at registry.browserless.io/browserless/browserless/enterprise. The official guide recommends pinning a specific version for production rather than relying on the mutable latest tag; 2.3.0 is an example tag in that guide, not a claim that it is the latest release. See the Browserless Enterprise Docker guide.
Pull and run the Enterprise image
-
Authenticate to Browserless’s private registry using the credentials Browserless provided:
docker login registry.browserless.io -
For a quick start, pull the documented latest tag:
docker pull registry.browserless.io/browserless/browserless/enterprise:latestFor production, substitute a version tag confirmed in the current Browserless documentation and pin it in your deployment configuration.

Use Docker Compose for a production starting point
Browserless recommends Compose for production deployments. The following mirrors the guide’s example settings; they are configuration examples, not universal sizing recommendations or performance guarantees. Set secrets securely for your environment and pin IMAGE_TAG to a version you have chosen.

Save the file as compose.yaml, provide the variables through your deployment’s secret mechanism, then start and inspect the service:
docker compose pull
docker compose up -d
docker compose ps
docker compose logs -f browserless
Compose support for resource reservations and limits can depend on the runtime and deployment mode. Confirm that your Docker environment applies the settings as intended. The values above are the guide’s example, not a sizing formula.
Allocate shared memory for Chrome
Chrome uses /dev/shm. Browserless says Docker’s default shared-memory allocation is 64 MB and can lead to instability under load; its production guidance recommends increasing it, with --shm-size=2g as an example. In Compose, the equivalent example is shm_size: 2g.
--ipc=host is another possible option in some environments, but it shares the host IPC namespace and may be less desirable when isolation matters. Prefer an explicit shared-memory allocation unless your environment gives you a reason to use host IPC.

Configure licensing and API authentication separately
KEY: validates the Enterprise license and unlocks Enterprise features.TOKEN: authenticates client API requests. It does not replaceKEY.
According to the configuration reference, an unset TOKEN leaves endpoints unauthenticated. Configure a token whenever clients can reach the service beyond localhost, and restrict network access as an additional security layer.
For production, Browserless’s best-practices guide demonstrates using Docker secrets with KEY_FILE and TOKEN_FILE, rather than leaving credentials in environment variables or application code. Keep the registry login credentials, Enterprise key, and API token protected as separate secrets.
Limit exposed capabilities
Keep CORS disabled or narrow allowed origins to the clients that need access. Leave ALLOW_GET false and ALLOW_FILE_PROTOCOL false unless your deployment specifically requires them. Review the configuration reference before enabling other sensitive protocol features.
Manage self-hosted token roles
Browserless documents self-hosted Docker token roles of admin, developer, viewer, and public. The root TOKEN receives the admin role on first startup, and tokens persist to disk across restarts. This role-management behavior is documented for self-hosted Docker; do not assume it applies to every Browserless deployment type. See the self-hosted token guide.

Tune concurrency, queueing, timeouts, and persistence
Concurrency and queue limits
CONCURRENT caps simultaneous browser sessions. QUEUED sets how many requests can wait while sessions are occupied. If the running and queued capacity is exhausted, Browserless can reject requests with HTTP 429. Choose values by measuring your own workload and available resources; the documentation does not provide a universal sizing formula.
Session timeout
The configuration reference documents a default session timeout of 30 seconds. Increase TIMEOUT for jobs that legitimately take longer. Setting TIMEOUT=-1 disables the timer, so your application must reliably close sessions or they can consume resources indefinitely.
Persistent data
Use DATA_DIR and a volume mount when data needs to survive container replacement or restart. The configuration reference also documents volume-backed persistence examples for user data and metrics; choose paths and retention appropriate to your deployment.
Plan the operational trade-offs
With Enterprise Docker, you control the infrastructure and data location, which can suit data-sovereignty needs, air-gapped environments, or custom network configurations. You also own deployment security, monitoring, capacity, scaling, and operational upkeep. Browserless documents scaling across containers, but the example Compose limits above do not establish a capacity guarantee.

The self-hosted Enterprise image is distinct from Browserless’s free self-hosted open-source product. Browserless’s current product documentation points to Enterprise Docker for BrowserQL, stealth and CAPTCHA solving, session recording, live debugging, webhooks, and OpenTelemetry; verify current plan details with Browserless before relying on a specific capability. See Enterprise Docker documentation.
Move from Browserless Cloud to self-hosted
A move from Cloud changes both the service URL and authentication setup: clients must point to your self-hosted endpoint and use the configured self-hosted TOKEN. If reconnect or LiveURL links would otherwise advertise localhost:3000, set EXTERNAL to the public-facing URL that clients should use.
Managed residential proxies are not included by default with self-hosting. If your workflows need proxies, provide your own and configure them per request. See the Cloud-to-self-hosted migration guide.
Troubleshoot common deployment problems
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check or change |
|---|---|---|
| Docker cannot pull the image | Registry authentication is missing or invalid, or the image reference is incorrect. | Log in to registry.browserless.io with the credentials supplied by Browserless, then verify the full image path and tag. |
| Enterprise features are unavailable | KEY is missing, invalid, or confused with the client token. |
Check the container’s configured license key. Set TOKEN separately for API authentication; one does not substitute for the other. |
| Requests work locally but fail from clients | Clients may be using the wrong host or port, or the service may not be reachable through the network or firewall. | Confirm port 3000 mapping and routing, then try /pressure from the client network. For reconnect and LiveURL links, configure EXTERNAL with the reachable public URL. |
| API calls are rejected with 429 | Active sessions and queued requests have reached their configured limits. | Review CONCURRENT and QUEUED, investigate session cleanup and workload peaks, and tune limits against measured resource use. |
| Chrome becomes unstable under load | Shared memory may be too small for the workload. | Check the container’s /dev/shm allocation; Browserless recommends increasing it, with 2 GB as an example production setting. |
| Long jobs time out | The session timeout is shorter than the job duration. | Raise TIMEOUT to suit the job. If disabling it with -1, ensure clients close sessions reliably. |
| Endpoints are accessible without credentials | TOKEN is unset. |
Set a client token, preferably through Docker secrets or the documented file-based secret settings, and restrict network exposure. |

Frequently Asked Questions
Does the Enterprise key authenticate API requests?
No. The Enterprise key activates licensed features; client requests use the separate API token.
Can I use managed residential proxies with a self-hosted deployment?
Not by default. You must provide proxies yourself and configure them per request.
