Add visual regression checks to your CI/CD pipeline by capturing a small set of important UI states, comparing each run with an approved baseline, and routing changes to review before deciding whether they should block a merge. Visual checks complement functional tests: they reveal rendered differences, but do not prove that a page works correctly or is usable.
What visual testing adds to a DevOps pipeline
Visual regression testing compares rendered UI snapshots with a baseline so a team can spot unintended changes. A snapshot is meaningful only when the page is in the intended state and the capture environment is consistent. A difference is a signal to inspect—not automatic proof of a defect. Chromatic’s visual testing documentation describes visual tests built around snapshots, including Storybook stories.
Keep the checks alongside existing browser tests and pull-request review. Functional tests can verify interactions and expected behavior; visual checks can show that layout, styling, or content appearance changed. Neither replaces the other.
Choose what to capture
Begin with a short list of states where an unintended visual change would matter. Prefer stable, representative screens over a large collection of near-duplicates.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Important product or landing pages.
- Checkout or other high-impact user journeys.
- Distinct UI states, such as navigation open and closed.
- Responsive layouts at the viewports your team supports.
For component-driven work, Storybook stories can represent component states; for end-to-end journeys, capture from an existing browser test such as Playwright. Decide which states matter before adding snapshots, so the suite remains reviewable.
Make captures repeatable
Screenshot comparisons are sensitive to differences in the capture setup as well as changes in the application. Keep the browser and operating environment controlled, and wait until the page reaches the intended state before taking a capture. Playwright’s CI documentation includes container-based examples and identifies containers as useful for consistent screenshot and visual-regression environments.
- Use a consistent browser version and CI environment; where practical, use a matching container image.
- Wait for the relevant UI state, rather than relying on an arbitrary short delay.
- Isolate genuinely variable content where your chosen tool allows it, so changing data does not obscure meaningful UI differences.
- Keep viewport and other capture settings consistent between baseline creation and later runs.
Percy’s Playwright client documentation describes capture-readiness and configuration options. Check the current documentation for the tool you choose because integration behavior and supported options can change.
How to run visual tests in Playwright in CI
If your project already uses Playwright, you can start by running its existing tests in CI and adding screenshot assertions at selected states. The baseline and update workflow depends on your setup; make sure the team knows where approved snapshots live and how a deliberate change is accepted.

Install and run Playwright in the CI job
A basic Playwright CI sequence installs project dependencies, installs the required browsers and system dependencies, then runs the tests:
npm ci
npx playwright install --with-deps
npx playwright test
These commands follow the general setup pattern in the Playwright CI guide. The exact job syntax depends on your CI provider and project configuration. Playwright recommends setting workers to 1 in CI to prioritize stability and reproducibility; this is guidance, not a universal requirement. If the suite becomes slow, the guide also supports sharding tests across CI jobs.
Add screenshot assertions at chosen states
In a Playwright test, navigate to the page, bring it to the intended state, and use a screenshot assertion for the part of the interface you want to monitor. For example:
import { test, expect } from '@playwright/test';
test('product page visual state', async ({ page }) => {
await page.goto('https://example.com/product');
await expect(page.getByRole('heading', { name: 'Product' })).toBeVisible();
await expect(page).toHaveScreenshot('product-page.png', { fullPage: true });
});
Replace the example URL and heading with a route and state from your own application. A full-page capture can be useful when page length is part of what you need to inspect; for more focused checks, use a locator screenshot assertion if that better represents the UI component or region at risk. Review your Playwright configuration and documentation for the baseline generation and update behavior used by your installed version.

Connect the job to pull requests
Run the visual test command for pull requests so reviewers can see the result before merging. Ensure the CI job reports failure or review status in a way your team understands. Do not make an unexplained non-zero exit synonymous with “bug”: a legitimate design change can also produce a difference.
Choose an integration route
There are several practical routes, and they solve related but not identical parts of the workflow. ScreenshotNeo is a screenshot API and MCP server, rather than a visual-diff review platform; it can supply captures, while baseline comparison and approval still need to be handled in your test or review workflow.
| Route | Good fit when | Check before adopting |
|---|---|---|
| ScreenshotNeo | You need screenshot capture by API or an MCP server for AI-agent workflows. Its clean-shot handling, non-billing for failed or non-clean captures, and $5 Starter plan for 3,000 shots make it a capture option to consider first. | It is a capture service, not a substitute for deciding how your team stores baselines, reviews differences, and gates merges. |
| Native Playwright screenshot assertions | You already run Playwright and want checks close to the existing browser test suite. | Baseline storage and updates, environment reproducibility, cross-browser needs, CI artifacts, and failure handling. |
| Chromatic | You use Storybook, Vitest, Playwright, or Cypress and want a hosted snapshot and review workflow. | Framework integration, pull-request status checks, CI secrets, diff behavior, and current plan limits. |
| Percy | You want to upload visual snapshots from an existing CI suite using a supported integration. | Capture and review workflow, gate behavior, browser and device requirements, and current plan limits. |
These routes are not interchangeable rankings of visual-testing platforms: compare them against your existing stack and review process. Chromatic documents CI secrets, commands, and pull-request status checks in its CI guide. Percy documents a Playwright client that can route toHaveScreenshot() assertions through Percy and an optional reporter gate configured to fail on changes. Its documented visual verdict is handled in Percy’s review UI, and errors can fall back to native Playwright behavior; verify the current details in the client documentation.
Set a deliberate baseline and merge policy
Treat a changed snapshot as a review item. Inspect the difference in context, decide whether it reflects an intended design update or a regression, and update the approved baseline only after that decision. Define what the pipeline does when a difference appears: report it, fail the job, or require human review before merge. Tool settings can affect the result; for example, Chromatic documents UI Test and UI Review settings that influence whether detected changes produce a non-zero exit code. See its CI documentation and align the setting with your release policy.

Keep the suite useful as it grows
Start small, then measure review load and CI duration in your own project before broadening coverage. If Playwright execution becomes slow, its CI guide describes sharding tests across multiple jobs. There is no universal test count or speedup to target: the right scope depends on which UI changes your team needs to catch and can review reliably.
Troubleshooting common visual-test failures
Snapshots change on every build
Check whether browser or operating-system environments differ between baseline creation and CI, and whether the capture occurs before the page reaches a stable state. Keep the environment consistent and wait for the UI state you intend to compare. Variable content should be isolated only when it is genuinely unrelated to the UI change under test.

A design change fails the job
A changed image does not tell you whether the change is intentional. Review the diff, approve intended design changes, and update the baseline through the process your team has agreed on. Make the CI result clearly distinguish a pending review from a confirmed regression where your tool supports that distinction.
The CI job is slow
Keep the first suite focused on high-value routes and states. If Playwright runtime is the bottleneck, consider sharding the test suite across CI jobs, as covered in the Playwright CI guide; measure the result in your own pipeline.
A hosted visual check does not fail when a diff appears
Inspect the product’s current review and gate settings rather than assuming every difference fails a job. Chromatic’s UI Test and UI Review settings affect whether detected changes result in a non-zero exit code. For Percy’s Playwright client, review how its optional reporter gate is configured and how its review UI handles the visual verdict.
Frequently asked questions
Do visual tests replace functional tests?
No. They reveal rendered differences; functional tests are still needed to verify behavior, and neither type alone establishes usability.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsShould every page have a visual test?
Not necessarily. Choose representative, high-impact states that the team can review and maintain, then expand based on observed value and review capacity.
