Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesChoose Cypress if your team writes JavaScript and wants an integrated runner for web application end-to-end or component tests. Choose Selenium WebDriver if you need multiple test languages, already operate Selenium infrastructure, or want its broader browser automation suite and distributed execution model. If either fits, pilot both against the same journeys, browser targets, CI capacity, and failure-triage process before committing.
How Cypress and Selenium WebDriver differ
Both automate browsers, but they organize test execution differently. Cypress runs in the application’s browser run loop and communicates with a Node process for privileged tasks. Selenium WebDriver sends commands from an external client through browser automation interfaces. These architectures affect how a team works with the tools, but neither architecture alone establishes a universal speed or reliability winner.
Cypress presents an integrated testing application, including a runner and optional hosted services. Selenium WebDriver is part of a broader open-source suite that includes language bindings and Selenium Grid for distributed execution. The practical choice depends on your team’s language, browser matrix, test design, and CI ownership.
Compare language, browser, and CI requirements
| Decision point | Cypress | Selenium WebDriver |
|---|---|---|
| Test languages | Test code is written in JavaScript, according to Cypress documentation: Cypress: Why Cypress? and Launching Browsers. | Official bindings include Java, Python, C#, JavaScript, Ruby, and Kotlin: Selenium overview. |
| Execution architecture | Runs in the application’s browser run loop, with a Node process available for privileged tasks. See Cypress open mode. | An external client sends commands through browser automation interfaces. See Selenium overview. |
| Browser scope | Cypress lists Chrome-family browsers and Firefox; its launch documentation describes WebKit support as experimental. Confirm specific versions against current documentation: Launching Browsers. | Selenium supports broad browser automation. Verify the actual browser and version combinations your project requires in the Selenium overview and related official documentation. |
| Distributed CI | Cypress Cloud coordinates spec distribution across CI machines; Cypress CI documentation says parallelization requires recording to Cloud: Cypress Cloud parallelization. | Selenium Grid provides distributed execution infrastructure that the team configures and operates: Selenium overview. |
| Cost model | Cypress App is downloadable open-source software. Cypress Cloud is a separate SaaS service with paid plans; review current plan economics at Cypress pricing. | Selenium is an open-source suite, but running and maintaining browsers, machines, and Grid infrastructure still has an operational cost: Selenium overview. |
Choose based on your team’s constraints
Choose Cypress when JavaScript and an integrated workflow fit
- Your test code and existing web application work are primarily JavaScript.
- Your main goal is web application end-to-end or component testing.
- The team values an integrated runner and may benefit from hosted CI recording, replay, analytics, or coordinated parallelization.
Cypress Cloud is separate from Cypress App. Assess its current plan terms and cost alongside the value of its hosted CI functions rather than assuming the open-source app includes them.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Choose Selenium WebDriver when language choice or distributed execution matters
- Your organization needs bindings in more than one language, or its test codebase already uses Java, Python, C#, JavaScript, Ruby, or Kotlin.
- Your team already has Selenium expertise or operates Selenium Grid.
- Your browser automation requirements favor Selenium’s broader suite and distributed execution model.
Check that the binding and exact browser/version combination you need are supported by current official documentation; broad browser automation support does not guarantee every version behaves identically.
Do not choose on an assumed speed or reliability winner
The official product descriptions explain capabilities and architecture, not a neutral, controlled head-to-head benchmark. Cypress and Selenium performance claims should be treated as vendor claims unless independently measured under conditions matching your workload. Your result will depend on the test suite, browsers, CI resources, application, and triage process.

Run a representative pilot if both remain viable
Use the same critical journeys and compare operational effort, not just a single runtime number. Keep browser targets and CI capacity as similar as practical so the results answer your team’s question.
- Select representative journeys. Include workflows that are business-critical and tests that exercise the UI patterns your team actually maintains.
- Set a matching browser matrix. Test the versions required for deployment, checking both tools’ current support documentation first.
- Use comparable CI capacity. Record machine count, resource limits, and any hosted service or Grid configuration used.
- Track four outcomes. Measure suite runtime, effort to diagnose failures, maintenance effort, and total service plus infrastructure cost.
- Review failure ownership. Decide who will maintain browser versions, CI integration, parallel execution, and the process for investigating intermittent failures.
- Make the choice from the team’s constraints. Prefer the tool that meets required language and browser coverage with an operational model your team can sustain.
ScreenshotNeo as an alternative for screenshot capture
Cypress and Selenium are browser testing tools; if the need is to capture website screenshots rather than build browser automation tests, try ScreenshotNeo first. It is a screenshot API and MCP server for developers, not a replacement for either test framework. A single GET request can return a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF, and its parameter names also work with those used by other screenshot APIs, which can make switching easier.

ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie and consent banners and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; those steps can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for AI agents and MCP clients. The Free plan includes 1,000 shots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots.
