To detect website defacement and other unauthorized changes, compare the live site and server against a verified, known-good baseline, then investigate alerts alongside release records, authentication logs, processes, and network activity. A page that looks normal is not proof that the server is clean: attackers can alter configuration, application code, accounts, or other files without changing what visitors see.
What counts as website defacement or an unauthorized change?
A defaced page is one visible sign of a broader integrity incident. Unauthorized changes can include inserted, deleted, or modified public content, application code, web-server files, configuration, accounts, or software. NIST NCCoE defines integrity as “guarding against improper information modification or destruction and ensuring information non-repudiation and authenticity.” Its guidance treats detection as part of a wider process involving integrity monitoring, event detection, logging, containment, and forensics (NIST NCCoE SP 1800-26, Volume A).
Visual checks help spot changes to what a visitor sees, but they cannot establish that underlying files or accounts are trustworthy. Conversely, a file-change alert is not proof of an attack: deployments, patches, and administrator work can all change files legitimately.
How to detect changes: build a known-good baseline and monitor it
1. Verify the site before trusting its baseline
Establish the reference state only after checking that the server and site are clean. A baseline made from an already-compromised system can mark malicious files as trusted. Include the files and settings that matter to your threat model, such as critical public content, application code, web-server configuration, and relevant system files.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
2. Protect the reference data
A file-integrity monitor compares current checksums or cryptographic hashes with a reference database and reports differences. Store the reference data offline or otherwise separately from the monitored host so an attacker who can alter the website cannot quietly rewrite the trusted reference too. Avoid weak 32-bit CRC checks for integrity verification; NIST SP 800-44 discusses using stronger checksums and protecting the reference database (NIST SP 800-44).
3. Monitor the files and activity that matter
Monitor selected critical files and relevant application and server configuration. Keep timestamps and contextual logs, and route alerts to the administrator or response team responsible for investigating them. Also monitor server logs, processes, accounts, and system activity: a file difference is more informative when considered alongside who authenticated, what changed, and what ran around the same time.

4. Triage each alert against authorized work
Check release calendars, patch records, administrator activity, and approved change tickets before treating a difference as malicious. Investigate unexplained changes, especially if they coincide with unusual logins, new privileged accounts, unexpected software or services, unfamiliar processes, or unusual network behavior. NIST’s older SP 800-44 recommends nightly checks on selected system files affected by compromise; that is a recommendation in that publication, not a universal current schedule. Set monitoring frequency according to your risk, environment, and response capability.
5. Preserve evidence and follow the response plan
If a change is suspicious, preserve relevant logs and artifacts before remediation alters them, and follow your incident-response and reporting procedures. A screenshot or the visible page alone is not a complete forensic record. CISA’s incident-investigation guidance emphasizes artifact and log preservation and analysis; use the relevant procedures in your organization’s response plan (CISA, Technical Approaches to Uncovering and Remediating Malicious Activity).

What indicators should you look for?
None of these signals proves compromise on its own. Correlate them with approved changes and other evidence.
- A hash or checksum mismatch on a critical file.
- Unexpected edits to public pages, scripts, application code, or server configuration.
- Changes outside expected release or maintenance windows.
- New privileged accounts, software, services, or processes that lack an approved explanation.
- Unusual authentication patterns or network activity occurring around the time of a file change.
Host monitoring, network monitoring, and visual checks
These methods observe different things; they complement rather than replace one another. NIST SP 800-44 Rev. 2 describes host-based and network-based intrusion-detection capabilities and limitations (NIST SP 800-44 Rev. 2).

| Approach | What it can reveal | Trade-offs and limits |
|---|---|---|
| Host-based monitoring | File and system changes, processes, and activity on the monitored server. | Uses host resources and depends on the operating system. An attacker who compromises the host may also affect an on-host monitor. It remains useful where encrypted web traffic limits network inspection. |
| Network-based monitoring | Traffic patterns across monitored network locations and potentially multiple hosts. | Coverage depends on sensor placement; encryption can reduce visibility into traffic contents. It does not replace file-integrity checks on a particular server. |
| Visual page checks | Changes in rendered content and appearance from the viewpoint being checked. | Cannot establish the integrity of server files, configuration, accounts, or code. A normal-looking page does not rule out unauthorized changes. |
Host software also requires maintenance, and both host and network monitoring can generate false positives. Alert quality depends in part on current detection content and on how well alerts are tuned to the environment. Plan for triage rather than expecting any one monitor to catch every attack.

For public-facing pages, compare consistent captures of important URLs over time. Keep the same viewport, device settings, and capture conditions when possible; otherwise responsive layouts, rotating content, personalization, or delayed loading may look like unauthorized changes. Review a visual difference against the release calendar and corroborate it with server-side integrity and log data. A screenshot records a rendered page, not the underlying files or the identity of whoever changed them.
