Websites detect scraping by combining signals—such as request patterns, known fingerprints, browser-side checks, and traffic trends—and then applying rules to allow, block, challenge, or limit requests. No single signal proves that a visitor is a scraper, and the signals and controls vary by provider and plan. For site owners, the practical goal is to protect specific routes without disrupting legitimate visitors or useful crawlers; for developers collecting data, the key is to follow the site’s rules and use authorized access.

How websites detect automated traffic

Bot detection is usually a layered classification process, not a single test for a particular user agent or request. Cloudflare says it uses multiple detection engines because different bot types require different strategies. Its documented examples include signatures, heuristics, machine-learning approaches, behavioral analysis, JavaScript detections, traffic baselines, and bot scoring. These are examples of one provider’s toolkit, not a universal checklist used by every website. Cloudflare’s detection-engine documentation describes the engines it offers.

Fingerprints and heuristics

A system may compare a request or client characteristics with known patterns, or apply rules that flag combinations of signals. Matching a known signature can help identify simple automation, but signatures alone may not describe more complex traffic. Detection providers may combine these signals with other evidence rather than treating one characteristic as conclusive.

Behavior and traffic patterns

Repeated requests, unusual request sequences, or activity that differs from a site’s normal traffic can contribute to a classification. As a vendor-specific example, Cloudflare documents scraping detections that analyze patterns at the zone level, including by autonomous system number (ASN) and JA4 fingerprint. Cloudflare says those matches are recalculated rather than treating one fingerprint as a permanent flag. The details should not be generalized to other providers or sites. Cloudflare’s scraping-detection documentation explains this implementation.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

JavaScript and client-side signals

Some systems use browser-side JavaScript detections as one input to bot classification. This is one reason a request that looks ordinary at the HTTP level may still be assessed using additional signals. The exact checks depend on the provider, its configuration, and the service tier; the reviewed documentation does not establish one client-side test that all sites use.

Scores are provider-specific

Cloudflare documents a bot score from 1 to 99, with lower scores indicating a higher likelihood that a request came from a bot; scores below 30 are commonly associated with bot traffic in Cloudflare’s system. This is Cloudflare’s scale, not an industry-wide standard. A score is a classification signal, not proof that a request is automated. Cloudflare’s bot-management architecture reference describes the scale.

What a website can do after detection

Detection informs policy; it does not dictate one universal response. A site can allow a request, block it, issue a challenge, or apply a rate limit. The best choice depends on the route, the likely harm, and the risk of affecting real users.

Response What it does Tradeoff or suitable use
Allow Permits the request, including traffic classified as an acceptable bot where policy allows it. Useful when automated access supports the site, such as for a verified or otherwise welcome crawler.
Block Denies requests that match a rule. Direct, but an overly broad rule can deny legitimate visitors or integrations.
Challenge Asks a visitor to complete an additional check before access. Can deter suspicious traffic, but may disrupt legitimate visitors and API clients. Cloudflare advises excluding API paths where operators do not want challenges issued. See Cloudflare’s challenge overview and scraping-detection guidance.
Rate-limit Restricts how often a client can repeat an operation during a defined period. Useful for controlling request volume on sensitive routes, but limits need to reflect legitimate usage. Cloudflare gives repeated price lookups as an example of an operation that can be limited to make large-scale catalog scraping harder.

Rules can be scoped using a web application firewall (WAF) or application logic, depending on the site’s setup. Cloudflare’s guidance emphasizes tailoring limits to the route and operation and monitoring their effect on legitimate traffic. Cloudflare’s rate-limiting best practices provides vendor-specific implementation guidance.

Distinguish unwanted scraping from useful bots

Automated traffic is not automatically harmful. Search crawlers and other bots may serve a site’s interests, while high-volume or extractive activity may not. Cloudflare describes behavior-based classification as a way to allow bot behavior that helps a business and block behavior that harms it. Policy should therefore identify which automated access is acceptable, rather than treating every bot classification as a reason to block. See Cloudflare’s bot concepts.

What robots.txt can—and cannot—do

robots.txt communicates crawler preferences. Google says Googlebot and other respectable crawlers follow those instructions, while other crawlers might not. It is not an access-control mechanism: a client that ignores the file can still make requests. If a path must be protected, use an appropriate server-side control, such as authentication, WAF rules, or rate limits, rather than relying on robots.txt alone. Google Search Central’s robots.txt guide explains the file’s role; Cloudflare’s bot-management explainer discusses enforcement options.

Choosing controls for a site

Start with the operation you need to protect, then select signals and actions that fit it. Available engines and rule features differ among providers and service tiers. Cloudflare and Google Cloud document managed bot controls, but the cited vendor materials do not constitute an independent cross-vendor effectiveness test, so they do not support ranking providers by how well they stop scraping. Google Cloud Armor’s bot-management documentation is one example of another managed offering.

  • Signal: Is the decision based on known signatures, request behavior, client-side JavaScript signals, broader traffic patterns, or a combination?
  • Action: Can you allow, block, challenge, or rate-limit, and can those actions be selected independently?
  • Scope: Can rules target the specific route, operation, or class of crawler at issue?
  • User impact: Could a challenge interrupt legitimate visitors or API calls? Could a limit constrain normal usage?
  • Operations: Can your team review classifications and adjust rules as traffic and site behavior change?
  • Provider and plan: Confirm which detection engines and controls are included in the relevant service tier instead of assuming every provider offers the same features.

Practical deployment and monitoring

  1. Identify the resource and behavior to protect. Focus on a route or operation, such as repeated catalog lookups, rather than treating all automated requests alike.
  2. Decide which bots should be allowed. Separate useful or authorized crawlers from traffic you intend to restrict.
  3. Choose a proportionate response. Use a rate limit when request volume is the concern; reserve blocks or challenges for rules that justify a stronger intervention.
  4. Scope rules carefully. Apply them to the relevant routes and operations. If using challenges, exclude API paths that should not receive them, following the applicable provider’s guidance.
  5. Observe real-world effects. Check whether legitimate visitors or integrations are being affected and revise the rules if the response is too broad.

For authorized website screenshots

When your goal is to capture a page you are authorized to access, a screenshot API is a different tool from a bot-detection or blocking service. ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server; it is not a way to bypass a site’s access controls. Its API accepts a URL and returns an image or PDF. For a one-request capture, use the documented endpoint and an API key:
