Choose a Browserless endpoint by the result you need: use /content for rendered HTML, /scrape for selector-based JSON, /screenshot for an image, /pdf for a PDF, and /function for custom Puppeteer logic. These REST endpoints handle one browser task per request; if your workflow needs browser state to persist across steps or requests, consider BaaS sessions or BrowserQL instead.

Which Browserless API endpoint should you use?

Start with the output you want, then check whether the task is a single request or a longer interaction.

Task Endpoint or path What it returns or does
Get JavaScript-rendered page markup to parse yourself /content Rendered HTML with a text/html response.
Extract known fields with CSS selectors /scrape Structured JSON from the selectors and extraction properties in your request; supports waits for JavaScript or lazy-loaded elements.
Scrape with Browserless choosing a lighter or browser-based approach /smart-scrape JSON; tries HTTP first and falls back to a full browser.
Capture a rendered page /screenshot PNG, JPEG, or WebP; supports full-page capture and Puppeteer-style screenshot options.
Generate a document /pdf PDF output.
Run custom browser actions or extraction logic /function Executes your Puppeteer code and lets it choose the response content type; the session closes when execution finishes.
Search, map, crawl, download, or retrieve a native-type response /search, /map, /crawl, /download, or /export Discovery, asynchronous crawling, downloads, and native-type retrieval. Check each endpoint’s documentation for its inputs and constraints.
Run a Lighthouse audit /performance JSON metrics.
Attempt to retrieve selected data from a protected page /unblock Can return selected content, cookies, a screenshot, or a browser WebSocket endpoint; success depends on the protection in use.

Browserless describes REST as HTTP endpoints for common browser tasks, including screenshots, PDFs, content scraping, downloads, function execution, and unblocking. See the REST API overview for the current endpoint guidance.

How to choose among the scraping endpoints

Use /content when you need the markup

/content returns rendered HTML, including content produced by JavaScript. Choose it when you want to apply your own parsing rules to the page’s markup rather than ask the endpoint for particular fields.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Use /scrape when you know the selectors

For a repeatable extraction of known page fields, name CSS selectors and extraction properties in the request. The response is structured JSON, and the endpoint supports waits for JavaScript or lazy-loaded elements. This avoids writing a separate HTML parser for fields you can identify by selector. See the scrape endpoint documentation.

Use /smart-scrape when you want an automatic fallback

The overview says this endpoint tries HTTP first, then falls back to a full browser. It is a fit when you want Browserless to choose between the lighter HTTP path and browser rendering; its response is JSON.

When a one-request REST endpoint is not enough

Browserless REST is stateless: a request launches a browser, performs a task, and closes the session after the response. A specialized endpoint is not a persistent browser session, so a sequence such as clicking a control, filling a form, then scraping cannot be spread across multiple REST requests while keeping the same page state.

Use /function for custom steps within one execution

/function runs caller-supplied Puppeteer code, which is useful when a task needs custom actions or extraction logic that a specialized endpoint does not express. It still closes the browser session when the function completes; it is not a way to retain state for later requests. Consult the function endpoint documentation.

Use BaaS sessions or BrowserQL for persistence

If later actions need cookies, page state, or a browser session kept available across requests, choose a documented session-management or persisted-state approach rather than chaining stateless REST calls. Browserless points readers to BaaS session management or BrowserQL persisted state and reconnect. Its getting-started guide recommends BAP for new automation, REST for stateless one-shot work, and Puppeteer or Playwright for users who already have local scripts: Browserless getting started.

What if the site blocks automation?

/unblock is intended for attempts to retrieve content from protected pages and can return selected content, cookies, a screenshot, or a browser WebSocket endpoint. It is not a guarantee of access: advanced fingerprinting and interactive CAPTCHAs can still defeat REST attempts. For advanced cases, Browserless recommends BrowserQL. See the unblock documentation and the REST API overview.

Which path fits your automation style?

  • One HTTP request, one result: use the specialized REST endpoint that matches your output.
  • Custom Puppeteer behavior, but one execution: use /function.
  • Browser state across multiple steps or requests: use BaaS session management or BrowserQL persisted state/reconnect.
  • Existing local browser scripts: the getting-started guide identifies Puppeteer or Playwright as options for developers who already have them.
  • New automation: the getting-started guide recommends BAP.

The Browserless API reference displayed documentation version 2.56.7 when reviewed on October 3, 2026. That is a documentation version, not a statement that every Browserless deployment runs that version. Screenshot alternative: ScreenshotNeo

If your specific job is capturing a website screenshot through a simple API call, try ScreenshotNeo first. It provides PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF output, removes supported consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture, and bills only clean shots; bot checks, blank pages, failed loads, timeouts, and cache hits are not billed. It also has an MCP server for AI agents. The Browserless endpoint guide above is for choosing Browserless paths; ScreenshotNeo is a separate alternative for screenshot jobs.

Or skip the browser setup

Make one GET request for a screenshot:

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

Cookie banners, popups, and chat widgets are removed before the shot; bot checks, blank pages, and failed loads are never billed. An MCP server lets AI agents take screenshots. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation, then sign up for 1,000 free screenshots a month with no card.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Browserless REST keep cookies between requests?

No. REST requests are stateless and close the browser session after completing the task. Use BaaS session management or BrowserQL persisted state when you need persistence.

Does /unblock guarantee access to a protected site?

No. Advanced fingerprinting and interactive CAPTCHAs may still block REST attempts.
