A headless browser is a browser running without a visible window; a “real browser” usually means a headed browser with its user interface displayed. Headless does not necessarily mean a different or fake browser: modern Chrome Headless shares Chrome’s implementation, though the exact browser build, automation framework, operating system, and configuration can change the result. Use headless for unattended automation such as CI, and a visible browser when you need to inspect or interact with the interface.
What the terms mean
Headless browser
A headless browser runs without displaying a browser window. It can still load and render web pages and be controlled by automation software. Chrome describes its Headless mode as running without visible UI in unattended environments. Chrome Headless mode
Headed or visible browser
A headed browser displays its normal interface. In automation, the same general browser-control tools can launch a browser in visible mode, allowing a person to watch the page and interact with it.
Why “real browser” can mislead
Headless and headed describe whether the UI is shown, not by themselves which browser engine or build is running. For a useful comparison, identify the engine, exact browser build and version, channel, operating system, viewport, and whether it is headed or headless. A headed browser is not automatically a closer match to a user’s environment if its version or platform differs.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Headless vs. headed: the practical differences
| Area | Headless | Headed (visible) |
|---|---|---|
| Interface | No browser window is displayed; suitable for unattended servers, containers, and CI. | Displays the browser UI for interactive inspection. |
| Implementation | Modern Chrome Headless shares the Chrome implementation, but older Headless and some automation-framework configurations use a separate headless-shell binary. | Runs the browser’s visible mode; fidelity depends on matching the target build, channel, and platform. |
| Typical use | Automated tests, screenshots, PDF generation, and other tasks that do not need a person to see the browser. | Debugging visual behavior and investigating workflows that benefit from direct interaction. |
| Fidelity considerations | Framework defaults may select a different browser binary from the one you expect. Check the build and configuration. | Branded-browser behavior, operating-system differences, and media codec availability may matter. |
| Automation tools | Chrome can be controlled with tools such as Puppeteer or Selenium/WebDriver; Playwright documents multiple browser builds and projects. | The same families of automation tools can launch browsers in headed mode, depending on configuration. |
Does headless Chrome behave like normal Chrome?
Modern Chrome Headless is not inherently a separate browser engine: Google says Chrome now has unified Headless and headful modes. The unified mode was updated in Chrome 112; it creates platform windows without displaying them. That describes Chrome’s implementation, not a guarantee that every automated run will match every visible session. Build selection, framework configuration, operating system, viewport, and other settings still matter. Chrome’s Headless documentation
Legacy Headless is a separate case
The older Chrome Headless implementation was separate from regular Chrome. Starting with Chrome 132.0.6793.0, that old mode is available as the standalone chrome-headless-shell binary. Do not assume that a framework’s “headless” setting selects modern unified Chrome Headless: the framework may choose the shell instead.

Playwright’s browser choice matters
Playwright documents that its default headless Chromium can use a separate headless shell, while a Chromium channel can opt into the newer headless mode. Its documentation warns that Google Chrome and Microsoft Edge’s newer Headless implementation can differ from the Chromium headless shell used by default. Playwright versions also require particular browser binaries, and supported browser versions change with releases. Check the configuration and browser version you actually run. When to use each mode
Choose headless for unattended work
- Run repeatable automated checks in CI, containers, or a server without a display.
- Capture screenshots or generate PDFs as part of a workflow.
- Run tests where the primary need is automated execution rather than watching the browser.
Headless is a practical default for these jobs, but do not assume it is always faster, more stable, or lighter on resources. Those outcomes depend on the browser build and workload; the available documentation does not establish a universal performance advantage.

Choose headed mode when seeing the interface helps
- Investigate a failure by watching the page load and interacting with it.
- Inspect visual behavior or a workflow that is difficult to diagnose from test output alone.
- Reproduce a user-facing issue with a visible browser, while matching the user’s browser and platform as closely as practical.
Use both when fidelity matters
A useful workflow is to run routine checks headlessly, then investigate or validate relevant release regressions in the browser channel and operating system your users receive. If media codecs or platform-specific behavior are important, test on a matching platform rather than treating headed mode alone as proof of equivalence.
How to make browser tests reproducible
- Pin the browser version. Chrome for Testing is intended for testing and automation and can help pin versions for reproducible runs. Chrome automation and testing
- Record the automation framework and browser binary. In Playwright, note the Playwright version, selected browser project or channel, and whether headless uses the shell or newer Headless implementation. Playwright browser binaries are tied to framework releases. Playwright browser documentation
- Match the relevant environment. Record the operating system, viewport, browser channel, and headed/headless setting. Match platform and browser branding when those differences are relevant to the failure.
- Compare like with like. If headed and headless results differ, hold the browser version, platform, viewport, and test configuration constant where possible, then vary the mode or binary deliberately.

Troubleshooting differences between runs
A test passes headed but fails headless
First check whether both runs use the same browser binary, version, channel, operating system, viewport, and automation settings. In frameworks such as Playwright, verify whether headless selected the headless shell rather than newer Chrome Headless. Compare logs and the rendered page before attributing the failure to headless mode itself.
A test passes headless but fails in the visible browser
Check whether the visible run uses a branded Chrome or Edge channel while the automated run uses a framework-provided Chromium build. Differences in platform, codecs, or browser version can affect results. Align those variables with the environment where the issue occurs.

Runs change after an upgrade
Automation-framework releases can update the browser binaries they support. Record and pin the framework and browser versions for repeatable checks, then update deliberately and investigate any changes against the prior known-good configuration.
Frequently asked questions
Is a headless browser fake?
No. “Headless” means the browser UI is not displayed. Modern Chrome Headless shares Chrome’s implementation, although some tools and legacy modes use a separate headless-shell binary.
Is headless always faster?
No universal speed advantage is established. Performance depends on the browser build, environment, and workload, so measure the configuration that matters to your task.
Can headless browsers take screenshots and make PDFs?
Yes. Screenshot capture and PDF generation are among the common unattended automation uses for headless browsers.
