Selenium WebDriver lets a program control a real browser through a language-specific API. For a first local script, install a Selenium binding, have a supported browser available, then create a browser session, navigate to a page, interact with or inspect an element, and call quit() to close the session. In modern Selenium, Selenium Manager commonly handles browser-driver setup automatically; manual configuration can still be needed in custom or restricted environments.
What is Selenium WebDriver?
WebDriver is a browser automation interface, not a browser or programming language. Selenium provides bindings for languages such as Python and JavaScript; those bindings send commands to a browser-specific driver, which controls the browser. You can run a browser on your own computer or connect to remote Selenium infrastructure.
The W3C describes WebDriver as “a remote control interface that enables introspection and control of user agents.” The WebDriver 2 document at W3C WebDriver is a Working Draft published July 2, 2026, so its text remains subject to change.
What do you need to get started?
- A language binding: install Selenium for the language you plan to use.
- A browser: for example, Chrome for the sample below.
- A browser driver: the browser-specific component that connects WebDriver commands to the browser. Selenium Manager, included with current Selenium bindings, automates much of its management in ordinary setups.
These are the conceptual pieces even when you do not install each one yourself. A locked-down machine, a custom browser location, or remote execution may require explicit configuration. See Selenium’s Getting started guide and project documentation for installation details by language.

Do you still need to download ChromeDriver?
Usually not for a straightforward current local Selenium setup: Selenium Manager can resolve and manage the driver automatically. ChromeDriver remains the separate executable that implements WebDriver support for Chrome, maintained by the Chromium team with WebDriver contributors. If you need to pin a driver, use a nonstandard browser installation, or work in an environment where automatic downloads are blocked, configure it explicitly using the ChromeDriver guide and your binding’s current documentation.
How to install Selenium WebDriver and run a first script
The commands and sample below use Python. They assume Python and Chrome are already installed and that your environment can access Selenium Manager’s driver-management process. The example opens the Selenium documentation, finds an element by its ID, prints its text, and closes the session even if an error occurs.
- Create and activate a virtual environment in your project directory:
python -m venv .venv. Activate it withsource .venv/bin/activateon macOS or Linux, or.venvScriptsactivatein Windows Command Prompt. - Install the Python binding:
python -m pip install selenium. - Save this as
first_selenium.py:from selenium import webdriver from selenium.webdriver.common.by import By driver = webdriver.Chrome() try: driver.get("https://www.selenium.dev/documentation/") heading = driver.find_element(By.TAG_NAME, "h1") print(heading.text) finally: driver.quit() - Run it:
python first_selenium.py. Chrome should open, load the page, print the firsth1text, and close.
If you prefer JavaScript, Selenium’s official quick start installs selenium-webdriver with npm and creates a Chrome session. The current JavaScript API lists Node.js 22 or later as its requirement; that runtime requirement applies to this binding, not to Python.

How to find elements and interact with a page
A locator identifies an element in the current page. Prefer a stable identifier intended for the element, such as an ID or a dedicated test attribute, when the site provides one. CSS selectors are useful where a stable attribute or structure is available; text and position-based selectors can be more fragile when page content changes.
In Python, import By from selenium.webdriver.common.by, then use calls such as driver.find_element(By.ID, "search") or driver.find_element(By.CSS_SELECTOR, "button[type='submit']"). A returned element can be clicked with .click(), filled with .send_keys("text"), or inspected with properties such as .text. Use the locator that matches the actual page; the sample’s h1 lookup is for demonstration, not a guarantee that every page has one.
How do you wait for an element?
A page navigation completing does not guarantee that a JavaScript-rendered control is ready. Wait for the condition your next action depends on—for example, an element becoming present or clickable—instead of making a fixed sleep the default. A hard-coded delay can waste time on fast loads and still be too short on slow ones. Consult the wait strategies in the WebDriver guide and the current API for your binding for exact wait syntax.

When a script fails intermittently, first identify what was not ready: the element may not yet exist, may be hidden, or may not yet accept interaction. Choose a wait condition that matches that state, and make sure the locator targets the intended element.
Local browser, remote WebDriver, and Grid
A local session is the simplest place to learn: your script starts a browser on the same machine and controls that session. Remote WebDriver connects the script to a browser running elsewhere. Selenium Grid is the project’s option for distributing browser runs across machines, useful when a team needs centrally managed or parallel execution. Grid is a later scaling step, not a prerequisite for a first script. The WebDriver documentation covers remote sessions and browsers; the Selenium project overview describes Grid.

Classic WebDriver commands versus BiDi
Traditional WebDriver work follows a command-and-response pattern: your script asks the browser to navigate, locate an element, or interact with it. WebDriver BiDi adds a WebSocket connection for bidirectional communication, including streaming browser events such as network requests, console messages, and JavaScript errors. It is an advanced capability, not a requirement for basic scripts. Support can differ by browser and binding, so check the documentation for the exact capability you need before depending on it.

- The browser does not start or the driver cannot be obtained: confirm the browser is installed and accessible, then check whether your environment blocks Selenium Manager’s downloads or network access. For custom or restricted setups, follow the binding’s driver configuration guidance or the official ChromeDriver setup instructions.
- The element cannot be found: verify the page and locator in the browser, ensure the element is in the current document, and wait for dynamically rendered content before searching.
- The element is found but interaction fails: check whether it is visible and interactable, whether an overlay covers it, and whether the page has finished the relevant asynchronous update. Use an appropriate condition rather than adding an arbitrary long delay.
- The script leaves a browser running: put
driver.quit()in afinallyblock so cleanup runs after success or failure. Usequitto end the whole session, rather than relying on closing a single window. - The sample fails under a different runtime or binding version: compare your installed binding and language runtime with that binding’s current API documentation. Requirements for JavaScript, for instance, should not be assumed to apply to Python.
