To turn browser actions into a Puppeteer script, record the flow in Chrome DevTools Recorder and export it as Puppeteer. Use the Recorder’s JSON export instead if you need to edit the flow and import it back into Recorder. If by “record” you mean a video of a page, Puppeteer’s separate, experimental page.record() API captures MP4 video; it does not generate automation code.

Record browser actions and export Puppeteer code

  1. Open the page you want to automate in Chrome.
  2. Open DevTools. Open the Command menu with Command+Shift+P on macOS or Control+Shift+P on Windows, Linux, or ChromeOS. Search for Recorder panel and select it. Alternatively, open More options > More tools > Recorder panel. See Chrome DevTools Recorder overview.
  3. In Recorder, create a recording, then perform the actions that make up your user flow in the page. Recorder captures the flow for replay, editing, and export.
  4. Use Export and select Puppeteer. Save the generated JavaScript.
  5. Review the generated steps and adapt the script to your test or automation task. If you change the flow in Recorder, its displayed export reflects the recorded steps; generated Puppeteer JavaScript itself cannot be imported back into Recorder.

Chrome DevTools Recorder’s documented export choices include Puppeteer, JSON, Puppeteer Replay, Puppeteer for Firefox, and Puppeteer with Lighthouse analysis. Refer to the Recorder features reference for the export workflow and formats.

Choose the right recording format

Output Use it when Important distinction
Puppeteer JavaScript You want editable code to customize and run with Puppeteer. It cannot be imported back into Recorder.
JSON You want a human-readable flow to edit, re-import into Recorder, or replay with tooling. This is the better choice for a round-trip editing workflow.
Puppeteer Replay You want to replay a Recorder-created flow with the Puppeteer Replay library. The exported steps remain a JSON object. Puppeteer Replay provides APIs to replay and stringify Recorder-created recordings; see its official repository.
Puppeteer for Firefox You need the separate Firefox-oriented export format. Chrome describes it in connection with WebDriver BiDi and says it can run on Chrome and Firefox. Confirm support for the Puppeteer version you plan to use.
Puppeteer with Lighthouse analysis You want exported code that includes Lighthouse analysis. This is an analysis-oriented export rather than simply the basic Puppeteer flow.

Record video or performance data instead

Capture an MP4 video

If you need a visual recording rather than code representing clicks and other actions, Puppeteer 25.12.0 documents the experimental page.record() API. It returns a screen recording as an MP4 stream; call stop() to finish it. Because the API is marked experimental, check the version and compatibility details for your target environment in the Page.record() API reference.

This API is distinct from Chrome DevTools Recorder: the former captures page video, while the latter records a user flow that can be exported as automation code.

Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Collect a performance trace

Puppeteer tracing produces a diagnostic trace file for inspection in Chrome DevTools or a timeline viewer. It is neither a Puppeteer script nor an MP4 recording. Only one trace can be active per browser. See the Puppeteer Tracing API reference.

The Puppeteer Page API marks screencast() obsolete and directs users to Page.record(). Its documentation says screencast requires Chrome 153 or later and ffmpeg. Since record() is experimental, verify current requirements before adopting either video workflow; see the Page API reference.

Or skip the browser setup

If your goal is simply to capture a page as an image or PDF—not to record interactions as a Puppeteer script—ScreenshotNeo can return a screenshot with one GET request. Its API accepts URL capture requests and supports PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF output. For example, this cURL request saves a WebP screenshot:

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options. Before capture, it can accept cookie or consent banners and remove known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; these steps can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server gives AI agents tools for screenshots, page information, and PDF capture. The free plan includes 1,000 shots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots. Troubleshooting the Recorder workflow

  • Recorder panel does not appear: Open DevTools and use the Command menu shortcut for your operating system, search for “Recorder panel,” or use More options > More tools > Recorder panel.
  • You need to edit and re-import the flow: Export JSON instead of Puppeteer JavaScript. The JavaScript export can be customized and run, but it cannot be imported into Recorder.
  • The exported code does not reflect your latest change: Make the change to the flow in Recorder and review its displayed export again; editing the downloaded JavaScript does not modify the Recorder flow.
  • You expected a video file: Recorder’s Puppeteer export is automation code. Use the separate experimental page.record() API for MP4 video, and check its current version compatibility.
  • You need diagnostic timing data rather than a replayable flow: Use Puppeteer tracing, which writes a trace file and permits only one active trace per browser.
  • You want Firefox execution: Choose the Firefox-oriented export only after confirming its current support with the Puppeteer version you use; Chrome documents the format in connection with WebDriver BiDi.
