How the platforms differ in practice
Browserless: several ways to drive a managed browser
Browserless describes managed headless browsers accessible through Puppeteer or Playwright over WebSocket, as well as REST and GraphQL APIs. Its documentation separates four interfaces:
- BaaS v2: for connecting existing Puppeteer or Playwright scripts to managed browsers over WebSocket, retaining control of the browser workflow.
- REST APIs: for stateless HTTP tasks, such as requesting a screenshot or PDF or extracting simple page information.
- BrowserQL: a declarative GraphQL interface for browser automation.
- BAP: typed TypeScript and Python SDK methods built around BrowserQL.
Browserless positions BaaS for existing scripts and REST for one-off HTTP jobs; it presents BAP and BrowserQL for declarative and stealth-oriented tasks. Those are the vendor’s intended use cases, not independent findings about effectiveness.

- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Browserbase: browser infrastructure alongside agent-oriented services
Browserbase’s current pricing page describes a managed browser platform that includes browser infrastructure, Search and Fetch APIs, agent runs, a runtime, and a model gateway. It advertises support for Playwright, Puppeteer, Selenium, and Stagehand. Browserbase describes Stagehand as an AI SDK it created and maintains. These are advertised capabilities; they do not establish comparative speed, reliability, or success rates.

Browserbase’s listed plans differ in browser hours, concurrency, agent runs, Search and Fetch calls, proxy allowances, retention, and capabilities. Browserless’s plans differ in monthly units, concurrency, session duration, persisted-session and replay storage, log-search windows, and overage rates. Comparing only the starting prices would ignore those differences.
Model Browserless usage, not just connections
Browserless defines a unit on its pricing page as up to 30 seconds per browser connection. Its usage documentation says browser time is charged in 30-second increments and partial increments round up. Built-in proxy bandwidth and CAPTCHA solving also consume units. An open but idle session continues to consume browser-time units, according to the vendor’s usage documentation.

Estimate the whole job: session duration, idle time, reconnects, proxy use, CAPTCHA solving, concurrency, and the number of monthly tasks. Then compare the result with each vendor’s current plan limits and overage terms. A short task that reconnects often or leaves sessions open may have a different cost profile from a long-lived session, even if both complete the same number of tasks.
Can you self-host Browserless or Browserbase?
Browserless: Docker and private deployment
Browserless documents cloud use, self-hosting through Docker, and private deployment. Its documentation says the open-source Docker image is licensed under SSPL-1.0 and is suitable for open-source projects, prototyping, and evaluation. It says a commercial license is required for closed-source commercial products or closed-source CI systems. The vendor describes its licensed build as adding rights and support, and says its Enterprise image adds BrowserQL and stealth. Treat those as vendor-published licensing and product descriptions, not legal advice; confirm exact rights and feature terms with Browserless before relying on them for procurement or distribution.

Browserless also documents shared-fleet regional endpoints in US West, the UK, and Amsterdam, plus a separate private-fleet endpoint for enterprise private deployments. Use the endpoint corresponding to your selected fleet. The published material does not establish that one region is faster for a particular user or workload.
Browserbase: managed cloud, with enterprise private options
Browserbase calls itself cloud-first and says it does not offer on-premises deployment. Its pricing page describes private-cloud options, VPC connectivity, and data-residency controls for enterprise customers. These are not the same as software you operate on your own premises. If policy requires customer-operated infrastructure, that distinction may decide the shortlist before pricing does.

Which platform should you choose?
Shortlist Browserless if
- You need to operate browser infrastructure yourself with Docker, or need to investigate its documented private-deployment path.
- You have existing Puppeteer or Playwright scripts and want a managed-browser WebSocket approach.
- Your task suits a stateless REST request, or you want to evaluate BrowserQL or the BAP SDKs.
- You can satisfy the applicable licensing terms for your intended use, including closed-source commercial use.
Shortlist Browserbase if
- A managed cloud platform is acceptable and its published quotas align with your expected browser hours and concurrency.
- You need to evaluate its advertised combination of browser infrastructure, Search and Fetch APIs, agent runs, runtime, or model gateway.
- Its advertised Playwright, Puppeteer, Selenium, or Stagehand support fits your development approach.
- Its enterprise private-cloud, VPC, or data-residency options meet your requirements without requiring on-premises deployment.
Make the comparison fair
- Write down the deployment boundary your security and network policies permit: shared cloud, private cloud, VPC-connected service, or customer-operated infrastructure.
- Choose representative tasks and measure their expected monthly volume, session duration, idle time, concurrency, reconnects, proxy use, and CAPTCHA-solving needs.
- Set the required retention period for sessions, replays, and logs, and record any region or data-residency constraints.
- Map the workflow to the actual interface you will use: existing browser scripts, REST requests, declarative browser automation, or agent-oriented services.
- Estimate total cost using the same workload on each service, including included allowances and overages; for Browserless, account for its unit rounding and unit-consuming features.
- Run the same representative tasks on both platforms before making a production decision. Record results under your own conditions rather than treating vendor feature descriptions as a performance benchmark.
No matched-workload benchmark or normalized cost comparison establishes a universal winner. The defensible choice is the one that meets your deployment and workflow requirements at a verified cost for your workload.
Screenshot-only jobs: an alternative to browser infrastructure
If you need a clean screenshot or PDF rather than a programmable browser session, ScreenshotNeo is an alternative to try first: its screenshot API removes consent banners, popups, and chat widgets before capture, and failed or non-useful page outcomes are not billed.
Or skip the browser setup
ScreenshotNeo accepts a URL in one GET request and returns an image or PDF. Its API also reports page verdict and billing status in response headers. For a WebP screenshot of a page, use cURL:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for parameters and response details. Cookie banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets are removed before the shot; bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed. An MCP server lets AI agents use ScreenshotNeo through Claude, Cursor, or another MCP client. The Free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000.
