To test how a website behaves in a browser, start with a Lighthouse audit in Chrome DevTools for page-level diagnostics, use WebPageTest to compare browser loads under chosen locations and connection profiles, and use scripted browser tests when you need to exercise a user journey. These tests answer different questions from a concurrent-traffic load test: Lighthouse alone does not establish how many simultaneous users a service can handle.
Choose the test that answers your question
| What you need to know | Suitable starting point | Record with the result |
|---|---|---|
| Where a page has performance opportunities or diagnostic issues | Lighthouse in Chrome DevTools | The page, device or audit configuration, metrics, and opportunities observed. |
| How browser loads compare across locations or connection profiles | WebPageTest | Browser, test location, connection profile, run count, and whether the result is a first or repeat view. |
| How a scripted browser journey behaves and what browser metrics it produces | k6 browser | The journey, browser environment, and metrics collected. |
| How a service or backend behaves under concurrent traffic | A protocol-based load test, such as k6 protocol testing | Workload shape and server-side measures. Add browser tests if user-visible rendering and interaction also matter. |
A browser audit, a remote page test, and a concurrency test are related but not interchangeable. Pick the method based on whether you are diagnosing one page, comparing a simulated browser experience, or generating traffic against a service.
Establish a page-level baseline with Lighthouse
Run the audit in Chrome DevTools
- Open the page in Chrome and open DevTools.
- Open Lighthouse, select the audit settings relevant to your question, and generate a report.
- Review the metrics, screenshots, opportunities, diagnostics, and passed audits in the report.
- Record the page and audit configuration alongside the result.
Use the report to identify what to investigate, not as a complete explanation of page behavior. When assessing a change, keep the page and browser conditions consistent and audit after each relevant change so you can distinguish its effect from other changes.
Automate Lighthouse when needed
Lighthouse is also available as a command-line tool and a Node module. Its project README recommends the CLI for more flexible configuration or automation. Check the current Lighthouse documentation for runtime requirements before installing; those requirements can change.

Compare browser loads with WebPageTest
Set conditions that reflect the question
- Enter the page URL.
- Choose a test location near the audience whose experience you want to approximate.
- Select a browser available at that location.
- Choose a connection profile that reflects the scenario you want to examine.
- Choose the number of runs and whether to test first view, repeat view, or both.
A remote test describes the selected browser, location, and connection profile; it does not automatically represent every visitor or production region. Report those settings with the result rather than treating it as a universal page-speed measurement.
Keep first and repeat views separate
A first view is useful for a fresh-visit scenario. A repeat view is intended to represent another visit with browser state or cache retained according to the test setup. These are different conditions, so label them distinctly when comparing results.

- 5-in-1 USB-C Hub: Experience comprehensive connectivity featuring a Power Delivery input, two USB-A 2.0 ports, a USB-A 3.0 port, and an HDMI port. (Note: The USB-C power delivery input port is only for connecting an external wall charger to power your laptop and cannot power peripheral devices.)
- 90W Pass-Through Charging: Achieve optimal charging with 90W pass-through power to your laptop, supported by a total input of 100W, with the hub reserving 10W for operational efficiency. (Note: Wall charger not included.)
- Quick Data Transfers: Accelerate your productivity with rapid data transfers using a high-speed 5Gbps USB 3.0 port and two 480Mbps USB 2.0 ports.
- 4K HDMI Display: Enhance your visual experience with a hub capable of delivering 4K resolution at 30Hz in both mirror and extend modes. Please note that this hub is compatible with MacBook (macOS 12 and newer), Windows 10 and 11, ChromeOS, and laptops equipped with DP Alt Mode and Power Delivery. Note: This device is not compatible with Linux.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
Multiple runs help reveal variation; they are not the same thing as repeat views. When runs differ, inspect the request waterfall and visual filmstrip to understand the loading timeline instead of selecting one favorable result as representative.
Use scripted browser and protocol tests for traffic and journeys
When a real browser interaction matters
k6 browser supports scripted interactions through a Chromium-based browser. Use a browser script when the behavior under test depends on rendering or interaction—for example, a user journey that needs to be exercised in a browser context. Define the journey and identify which browser metrics you intend to collect.

When concurrent traffic matters
Protocol-based tests can generate requests efficiently and help assess service or backend behavior. A protocol script does not show the same rendered, interactive experience as an actual browser. Combine protocol testing with browser testing when you need both a view of concurrent request handling and a view of user-visible behavior.
Specify the workload rather than guessing at a universal target
A test plan should state its virtual-user count, arrival pattern, duration, test geography, browser mix, and user journey. There is no universal value for those settings: tailor them to expected traffic and the test environment. Do not describe a run as representative without explaining the workload it actually generated.

Make comparisons reliable
- Change one relevant factor at a time when diagnosing a page.
- Compare like-for-like conditions: the same page, browser, location, connection profile, and view type where applicable.
- Use repeated runs to understand variability, and distinguish those runs from repeat-view visits.
- Keep the detailed report, waterfall, and filmstrip available for diagnosis; a single score does not explain what happened.
- State the setup and workload whenever reporting a result or claiming an improvement.
Limits to keep in mind
- Lighthouse is a diagnostic page audit, not a designed capacity or stress test.
- A remote browser result represents only its chosen browser, location, connection, and view conditions.
- Browser-based scripts and protocol-based traffic tests answer related but distinct questions; neither automatically substitutes for the other.
- Results can vary between runs, so a single result should not be presented as a stable fact without supporting setup details and comparable measurements.
Or skip the browser setup
ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server, not a load-testing service. It can capture a page as a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF; a screenshot can document how a page rendered during your investigation, but it does not measure concurrent-user capacity.
One GET request returns a capture. For example, save a WebP screenshot of the test page with cURL:
