A user agent is the software that makes a request to a website—usually a web browser, but it can also be another HTTP client. The User-Agent request header is a text string that describes that client. It can help a site diagnose compatibility problems or understand broad traffic patterns, but it is not reliable proof of which browser, device, or person is making the request.
What does “user agent” mean?
In HTTP, a user agent is the client software that initiates a request. A browser is the familiar example; other software that requests web resources can be a user agent too. The term refers to the program, not the person using it. The HTTP Semantics standard, RFC 9110, defines the term and describes the related header: RFC 9110.
The User-Agent header is a text field a client may send with an HTTP request. It commonly contains product identifiers and optional comments. RFC 9110 says a user agent SHOULD send this header with each request unless specifically configured not to; “SHOULD” is the standard’s recommendation, not a guarantee that every request contains an unchanged value.
What does a User-Agent string tell you?
A string may identify a client product and include version or platform-related information. A browser string can contain several product tokens, including compatibility labels retained for historical reasons. Its contents and detail vary: browser conventions, user settings, and user-agent reduction can all affect the value.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
MDN documents a reduced Chrome-on-Android-style example in which the browser’s major version remains while some platform, model, and lower version details are genericized. That is an illustration for a particular browser context, not a universal format or a dependable recipe for identifying every browser: MDN’s User-Agent header reference and MDN’s User-Agent reduction guide.
Read the header as a client-supplied description, not verified identity. It may be incomplete, reduced, shaped for compatibility, or configured by the client. A token that names a browser does not establish that the browser actually supports a particular feature, and the string does not identify the person at the keyboard.
Why do websites inspect the header?
Servers may use the User-Agent value to investigate interoperability reports, apply a workaround for a known client limitation, tailor a response, or analyze broad patterns of client usage. Those are possible uses, not proof that a site uses the header for any one of them. The header is only one piece of request information, and its contents may not be dependable enough for consequential decisions.

Should developers detect browsers from the User-Agent?
Usually not for choosing site behavior. Matching names or version numbers in the string—often called user-agent sniffing—is brittle: strings change, compatibility tokens can mislead, and a browser label does not establish that a capability is present. MDN recommends feature detection and progressive enhancement where possible: Browser detection using the user agent string.
Choose the test that answers the real question
- If you need to know whether a web API or capability is available, test for that capability rather than inferring it from a browser name.
- If you need an adaptable layout, use the relevant web platform capabilities instead of treating the string as a trustworthy device database.
- If a narrow, documented browser workaround is unavoidable, isolate the check and keep it easy to remove when the workaround is no longer needed.
User-Agent strings and Client Hints compared
Client Hints offer a more selective disclosure model in environments that support them. They do not make browser identification universally available or replace capability testing when the actual question is whether a feature works.
| Approach | How information is disclosed | Reliability and support | Privacy consideration |
|---|---|---|---|
User-Agent string |
Typically sent passively in the request header, unless the client is configured otherwise. | Widely encountered, but can be verbose, reduced, misleading, or changed by configuration. A match does not prove feature support. | Detailed platform and version information can contribute to fingerprinting when combined with other characteristics. |
| HTTP User-Agent Client Hints | A site can indicate requested information, commonly with Accept-CH; a supporting client may then return selected Sec-CH-UA-* headers. |
Availability and behavior vary by browser and configuration. Request only information needed for a specific purpose. | More explicit and selective than relying only on passively shared detail, but still discloses client information when requested and provided. |
The IETF describes Client Hints as an opt-in mechanism in RFC 8942. MDN covers practical use and compatibility in its Client hints guide and the User-Agent Client Hints API reference.

Can a website identify your device from your browser?
A User-Agent string can reveal information about the client software and, depending on what it contains, aspects of the platform. It is not by itself proof of a unique device or person. RFC 9110 notes that excessive identifying detail can contribute to fingerprinting when combined with other characteristics; the risk depends on the information available and how it is combined.
User-Agent reduction is intended to limit some information shared passively in supporting browsers, including exact platform or OS version, device model, and minor browser-version detail in documented examples. Browsers do not all implement identical reductions. Where a site has a justified need for extra details, Client Hints may allow it to request selected information, subject to client support and user configuration.

When to use Client Hints
- Identify a specific, justified need for client information; do not request details simply because they are available.
- In supporting environments, indicate requested hints through the appropriate mechanism, commonly the response header
Accept-CH. - Account for differences in browser support and configuration. A client may not provide a requested hint.
- Use the returned information only for the purpose that requires it. If your real question is feature support, use feature detection instead.
Client Hints do not eliminate privacy considerations: they communicate client information when requested and provided. For protocol context, see RFC 8942 and MDN’s HTTP Client hints guide.

Capture a page with a chosen User-Agent
For a browser-based test, configure the browser or automation client to send the User-Agent value you want to evaluate, then capture the page and compare its behavior. Treat the value as one test condition: it does not guarantee the page will behave like a particular physical device or prove support for a feature.
Or skip the browser setup
ScreenshotNeo accepts a custom User-Agent for a screenshot request. For example, use cURL to capture https://stripe.com with a test value; consult the ScreenshotNeo documentation for the current request options and encoding:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server from Yorker Media. Before capture, it can accept the cookie or consent banner as a visitor and remove more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each step can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server offers take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients. The free plan includes 1,000 shots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots. Every feature is on every plan. See ScreenshotNeo or its documentation.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does every browser send a User-Agent header?
RFC 9110 says a user agent SHOULD send it on each request unless configured otherwise, but that recommendation does not guarantee every request contains the header.
Is a User-Agent string the same as a browser fingerprint?
No. The string is one possible source of client information; fingerprinting can arise when details are combined with other characteristics.
