They do not guarantee lower proxy use: pages may keep making requests after reconnection, and the browser service may bill while it waits. Measure proxy requests and session costs against a fresh-session baseline before claiming savings.
When can reconnecting reduce proxy usage?
A reconnect hands a client back to a browser process that is still running. If the original client disconnected after loading a page or completing authentication, a new client may be able to continue from that live state rather than launch another browser and repeat those steps. Any proxy savings come from the requests that this continuation avoids—not from the reconnect operation itself.
This is a conditional operational benefit, not a documented percentage reduction. Browserless’s reconnect documentation describes the handoff, but the sources do not quantify proxy savings. A page that remains active can continue loading resources and generating proxy traffic. Reconnecting is not proof that traffic has fallen.
- Use reconnect when the next task needs the same live page or in-memory state.
- Consider persisted browser data when the next task needs cookies or storage but not the original live page.
- Use a fresh session when continuing the existing one offers no meaningful work to avoid.
Choose the right kind of continuity
Reconnect to a live browser
A live reconnect preserves the existing browser process, including open pages and in-memory state, while the process remains alive. Browserless documents a BAP workflow that obtains connection endpoints from an active session and allows a later client to reconnect. The handoff is useful for a short interruption, but its waiting window is bounded by the plan’s maximum session duration.

Persist browser data across a restart
Browserless’s Session API persistence documentation says cookies, localStorage, and cache can persist across browser restarts in an isolated user data directory. That is different from preserving a live page: after the old process ends, open pages and in-memory inputs are not restored simply because storage persists. The documented processKeepAlive grace period keeps the process alive for reconnection; after it expires, a new process starts. The process keep-alive feature is marked Puppeteer-only and requires browser.disconnect().
If a later job only needs durable authentication or storage, persistence may avoid holding an entire browser process open. If it must resume a particular page or retain in-memory state, use a bounded live-session handoff.
Reconnect with Browserless
Browserless documents more than one session workflow; do not assume their client requirements are interchangeable. In the BAP reconnect flow, call reconnect() while the session is active, obtain the returned endpoints, then connect the next client to the endpoint for the protocol it uses. The documented browserWSEndpoint is for Puppeteer or Playwright; other endpoints are available for BrowserQL, DevTools, and page-level CDP. See Browserless: Disconnect and reconnect to a browser and Reconnecting to sessions in BAP.

The returned endpoints omit the API token. Supply authentication on every subsequent connection, using the authentication method required by the endpoint. Treat endpoints and tokens as secrets: do not expose them in logs, client-side code, or shared error reports. The exact connection code depends on the Browserless client and the endpoint returned for the active session; use the current product documentation rather than copying a generic endpoint or inventing a token format.
Set a bounded reconnect window
The BAP documentation gives a default reconnect timeout of 30,000 milliseconds. The requested timeout is constrained by the plan’s maximum session duration, so confirm the current limits for your account before choosing a value. Reconnect again from each new connection if the handoff chain must continue. Close the session when work is complete.
A browser waiting for reconnection still bills and occupies a concurrency slot, according to Browserless’s Create a browser session documentation. Keep the wait only as long as the expected interruption requires. Plan limits, pricing, and session features can change; verify the current account terms before estimating costs.

Do not substitute the Standard Sessions pattern blindly
Browserless’s separately documented Standard Sessions pattern uses the Browserless.reconnect CDP command and depends on Puppeteer’s browser.disconnect() to detach without terminating the remote browser. Browserless says this pattern does not support Playwright because Playwright does not expose disconnect(). Check Standard Sessions and use the workflow documented for your session type and client.
Measure whether reconnects actually save proxy usage
Compare equivalent workloads rather than inferring savings from a successful reconnect. Run a fresh-session baseline and a reconnect version with the same target, actions, and proxy configuration. Record proxy requests or provider charges, repeated navigations or authentication steps, reconnect wait time, failures, and browser-session costs. Repeat enough runs to account for ordinary variation in page behavior; do not turn a vendor example into a percentage claim.
- Record whether the reconnect succeeded and how long the browser waited.
- Count proxy requests or use the proxy provider’s actual charge data, not just the number of browser sessions.
- Track repeated navigation and authentication work that the reconnect avoided.
- Include billed waiting time, concurrency usage, and any failed or abandoned sessions in the cost comparison.
- Compare the total against a fresh-session baseline before changing production assumptions.
Browserless’s documentation puts the operational point plainly: “A session waiting on a human is still a session that bills, so keep the wait bounded and close in a finally.” The practical implication is to make cleanup part of the workflow’s error handling, not an optional step after a successful run.

Failure handling and troubleshooting
Reconnect times out
The browser may have ended, the reconnect window may have elapsed, or the requested timeout may exceed the plan’s maximum session duration. Keep the window within the documented limit, reconnect promptly, and handle a missing live session by starting a fresh one rather than retrying indefinitely.
Authentication fails on the returned endpoint
Browserless says returned endpoints omit the API token. Include the required authentication on each new connection, and verify that the token is valid for the account and endpoint. Avoid printing the full endpoint or credential while debugging.
Playwright does not work with the Standard Sessions example
The Standard Sessions pattern depends on Puppeteer’s browser.disconnect(), which Browserless says Playwright does not expose. Use the BAP reconnect workflow when appropriate for the client, or select a session approach supported by the client you are using.

The page reopened, but its previous state is missing
A restart can restore persisted cookies, localStorage, and cache when persistence is configured, but it does not bring back the old page or in-memory state. To continue the same live page, reconnect before the process keep-alive grace period ends. Otherwise, design the task to rebuild its page state from durable data.
Reconnects do not lower proxy charges
Check whether the page kept loading resources, whether the next client repeated navigation anyway, and whether the proxy provider charges by requests, bandwidth, time, or another unit. A reconnect avoids only work that would otherwise have occurred; it cannot eliminate unrelated page traffic. If no repeated work was avoided, the reconnect may add session waiting cost without reducing proxy usage.
Or skip the browser setup
If your actual task is to capture a clean screenshot rather than resume a live automation session, ScreenshotNeo is a screenshot API and MCP server—not a browser reconnect service or a promise to reduce proxy charges. A single GET request returns an image or PDF. Its capture can accept cookie and consent banners and remove more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before taking the shot; those steps can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, with the response identifying the page verdict and billing status. AI agents can use its MCP server tools, including take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf. The free plan includes 1,000 shots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots.
For example, capture a page as WebP with cURL (replace the URL with the page you need):
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options. Sign up for 1,000 free screenshots a month, with no card required.
