Website test automation works best when it checks the same outcomes users care about, keeps each test independent, and uses deliberate waits and selectors. Playwright and Selenium both offer guidance for building maintainable browser tests, but no framework is the right choice for every team. Automated functional and accessibility checks are useful evidence—not proof of performance or complete accessibility conformance.
What should website test automation verify?
Start with user-visible behavior: what a person can see, enter, select, submit, or navigate to. Playwright recommends testing user-visible behavior rather than implementation details that users do not interact with. Model a test around an outcome and an explicit contract, such as a confirmation message appearing after a valid form submission.
Keep test scope clear. End-to-end tests are useful for important journeys across the application, while component tests or narrower checks may be more suitable for isolated behavior. Accessibility checks can complement functional tests. Performance measurement has a different purpose and should use suitable performance-testing tools rather than treating browser functional tests as benchmarks.
Example: a user-facing Playwright test
This illustrative test uses a label and visible confirmation text instead of relying on a page’s internal implementation. The exact labels and message must match your application.

import { test, expect } from '@playwright/test';
test('user can submit the contact form', async ({ page }) => {
await page.goto('https://example.com/contact');
await page.getByLabel('Email').fill('reader@example.com');
await page.getByLabel('Message').fill('Please contact me.');
await page.getByRole('button', { name: 'Send message' }).click();
await expect(page.getByText('Message sent')).toBeVisible();
});
Replace the example URL and text with your site’s actual route and user-facing wording. The example demonstrates a test shape, not a claim that a particular application or environment has been tested.
How do you make browser tests reliable?
Isolate tests and their data
Each test should establish the state it needs rather than depending on another test’s order or side effects. Playwright recommends isolated tests with their own relevant storage, data, and cookies. Selenium likewise recommends avoiding shared state and using fresh browser instances. Isolation makes failures easier to reproduce and debug.
- Give tests controlled accounts or records where practical; clean up created data when appropriate.
- Do not rely on another test having logged in, populated a database, or set a cookie.
- Mock external services when their availability or changing responses would make a functional test nondeterministic.
- Make failure reports useful enough to identify the failing step and relevant state.
Choose resilient locators
Prefer locators based on user-facing attributes—such as a role and accessible name, or a label—and explicit contracts that reflect the interface. Avoid tying tests to incidental implementation details when a user-facing locator can express the same intent. The right locator still depends on the interface and the behavior under test.

Wait for conditions, not guesses
Playwright locators provide automatic waiting and retry behavior, including actionability checks such as whether an element is visible and enabled before an action. This can reduce timing-related brittleness, but it cannot make a poorly designed test reliable by itself. Assert the outcome that matters and use an explicit condition when the test depends on a meaningful application state; avoid arbitrary pauses as a substitute for understanding that state.

There is no universal framework winner established by the available official guidance. Selenium explicitly treats its material as recommendations rather than universal rules and notes that the appropriate approach depends on the environment. Compare tools against your application and team instead of relying on a generic ranking.
| Decision factor | What to assess |
|---|---|
| Language and existing stack | Whether the team can maintain tests in its established languages, libraries, and workflows. |
| Browser and operating-system needs | The browsers and operating systems your users or supported environments require. |
| Test purpose | Whether you need end-to-end functional coverage, component testing, accessibility checks, or a combination. |
| Reliability and diagnosis | How the approach supports isolation, selectors, synchronization, failure debugging, and reporting. |
| CI execution | How tests will run in your CI environment, including parallel execution and any hosted browser infrastructure you need. |
| Long-term cost | The effort to maintain the suite and, if replacing an existing approach, migrate tests and team knowledge. |
Playwright’s guidance is especially relevant when you want user-facing locators, automatic waiting, and isolated tests. Selenium’s guidance is useful for thinking through test architecture, independence, and environment-specific choices. These are descriptions of documented practices, not a current head-to-head feature or performance comparison. Check each vendor’s current documentation for supported languages, browsers, operating systems, and execution options before committing.

How should accessibility fit into automated testing?
Use automated accessibility checks to catch some common issues, not to declare that a site conforms to WCAG or is accessible to everyone. Playwright’s accessibility documentation demonstrates using @axe-core/playwright in tests and cautions that automated checks identify only some issues. Cypress also says automated checks do not establish WCAG conformance. W3C WAI advises that tools can assist evaluation, but knowledgeable human evaluation is required and no single tool can determine accessibility.
Evaluate accessibility early and throughout development, when issues may be easier to address. Pair automated checks with manual assessment, and include disabled users’ perspectives where possible to understand real experiences that automated rules cannot fully capture.

Do not treat a WebDriver functional suite as a performance benchmark. Selenium warns that browser startup, servers, third-party assets, and WebDriver instrumentation can all affect results, adding variation that is separate from the functional behavior being tested. Functional tests ask whether a user journey works; performance tests measure response or resource behavior under defined conditions. Use a dedicated performance tool, such as the JMeter example named in Selenium’s guidance, for that separate objective.

Where does screenshot capture fit?
Screenshots can preserve visual evidence or support a visual review, but a screenshot alone does not establish that an interactive flow works, that the page is accessible, or that it meets a performance target. Keep capture and functional assertions distinct in the test plan.
Or skip the browser setup
For a screenshot rather than a functional browser assertion, ScreenshotNeo is a screenshot API and MCP server for developers. Its API can return an image or PDF from one GET request; see the ScreenshotNeo API documentation.
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://example.com -o shot.webp
ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie and consent banners before capture and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each step can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, with response headers indicating the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server provides screenshot and PDF tools for AI agents. The Free plan includes 1,000 shots per month without a card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots.

What commonly makes an automated test suite brittle?
- Tests depend on execution order: give each test its own relevant data, storage, and cookies instead of sharing state.
- Selectors break after harmless UI changes: prefer user-facing locators and explicit interface contracts over incidental implementation details.
- Actions race the page: use the framework’s waiting behavior and assert meaningful state; do not assume a fixed delay guarantees readiness.
- External services make outcomes inconsistent: mock dependencies where appropriate, so a third party’s availability or response does not control an unrelated functional test.
- A green accessibility scan is treated as proof: add knowledgeable human evaluation and inclusive user testing; automated checks cover only part of the problem.
- Functional runs are used to claim performance: separate the objectives and use a dedicated performance-testing approach.
How should you put these practices into a test plan?
- Pick consequential user journeys. Define the user action and observable success condition for each end-to-end test.
- Choose the framework in context. Assess language, browser and operating-system requirements, test scope, CI needs, suite maintenance, and migration effort.
- Make each test self-sufficient. Establish its own relevant state and avoid order-dependent setup.
- Use locators and waits deliberately. Express intent in user-facing terms and wait for the application condition the test needs.
- Keep evidence types separate. Use functional tests for behavior, automated and human methods for accessibility, and dedicated tools for performance.
- Review failures as design feedback. Improve isolation, assertions, and reporting when failures are hard to reproduce or diagnose.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do automated website tests replace manual testing?
No. They provide repeatable checks for defined behaviors, but manual evaluation remains important for accessibility and for experiences that automated assertions cannot fully assess.
Can I use screenshots to prove a website works?
No. A screenshot records a rendered view; it does not by itself prove that interactions, accessibility, or performance requirements are satisfied.
