Bright Data, SOAX, Oxylabs, and Smartproxy each publish different targeting, session, protocol, pricing, and onboarding details. The right fit depends on your permitted targets, required locations, session behavior, integration needs, expected traffic, budget, and acceptable-use requirements. Treat provider performance and pool-size figures as vendor claims, then run a small pilot against your intended workflow before committing.
What residential proxies do—and what they do not do
Residential proxies route requests through IP addresses presented as residential connections. Teams use them for public web data collection, location-specific market research, ad verification, and checking how a website appears or responds from a particular location. SOAX also describes website-availability and connection-speed checks as potential uses.
A residential IP is a routing choice, not permission to collect data. It does not by itself make a request lawful, authorized, undetectable, or compliant. Whether a project is permitted can depend on applicable law, the target site’s rules, the data and method involved, and your provider’s acceptable-use restrictions. Review those conditions before deploying a workflow; provider statements are not legal advice.
How the four services differ
The details below come from provider-authored pages, not independent comparative testing. Provider figures were surfaced on pages accessed October 3, 2026; the pages did not supply publication dates for those claims. Availability, features, and prices can change, so verify them with the provider before purchase.

| Provider | Published capabilities and claims | Pricing and onboarding details surfaced | Best fit to investigate |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bright Data | Lists residential, static residential, mobile, and data-center networks. Its residential offering lists HTTP/S and SOCKS5 and targeting by country, city, ZIP code, carrier, and ASN. Bright Data advertises “Over 400M+ monthly residential proxy IPs”; this is its own claim, not an independently verified or comparable pool count. | Its pricing FAQ says pay-as-you-go is available. KYC applies before residential or mobile network use. No directly comparable price was provided in the pricing material reviewed. | Investigate when you need detailed location or carrier/ASN targeting, or want to compare multiple network types. Include KYC and acceptable-use requirements in your evaluation. |
| SOAX | Describes country- and city-level geotargeting, rotation options, and a Web Optimizer for error handling and browsing stability. Its page describes coverage across more than 195 locations and excludes Texas; these are volatile provider statements. The page displayed a $1.99 trial. | The reviewed information does not establish trial duration, included traffic, or a comparable ongoing price. | Investigate when country/city targeting, rotation choices, or the Web Optimizer align with your workflow. Confirm exact current coverage, including whether required locations are available. |
| Oxylabs | Lists HTTP(S), HTTP/3, and SOCKS5; sticky sessions and rotation; and targeting by country, city, state, continent, ZIP code, coordinates, and ASN. Advanced filters include IP version and platform/OS and may require KYC. Oxylabs advertises “175M+” residential proxies across 195 countries and an average 99.95% success rate; both are vendor claims, not independent comparative results. | On the product page accessed October 3, 2026, self-service plans were displayed as follows. VAT may apply; confirm checkout pricing, traffic definitions, plan conditions, and availability. | Investigate when the listed protocol choices, geographic filters, or sticky-session controls match your technical and location requirements. |
| Smartproxy | Its responsible-use page describes an internet-sharing app with user opt-in and business use cases including ad verification, market research, ecommerce price monitoring, and large-scale proxy workflows. Smartproxy claims a 99.5% average success rate and more than 650 billion proxy requests monthly. Those claims are not independent performance measurements, and the reviewed material did not establish which current plans they cover. | Smartproxy describes pay-as-you-go per-GB and unlimited monthly billing options, but the reviewed information did not establish comparable current plan prices. | Investigate if you want to compare per-GB and unlimited billing models and can validate the plan-specific performance and usage terms for your workload. |
Oxylabs displayed self-service prices
| Displayed traffic allowance | Displayed price per GB | Displayed monthly total |
|---|---|---|
| 5 GB | $6/GB | $30 billed monthly |
| 20 GB | $5/GB | $100 |
| 125 GB | $4/GB | $500 |
| 1 TB | $2.50/GB | $2,500 |
These are Oxylabs prices displayed on the product page accessed October 3, 2026, not a guarantee of today’s checkout price. VAT may apply. Compare total expected spend, not only the per-GB rate: check traffic definitions, monthly minimums, included traffic, top-ups, taxes, and the size of the responses your workflow receives.
Rotating versus static or sticky sessions
The session model matters more than a large advertised pool if your workflow needs continuity. SOAX describes static residential/ISP proxies as keeping an address during a session, while rotating residential proxies change an address by request or at set intervals. Oxylabs lists both sticky sessions and rotation options. Compare the duration and controls actually offered for the plan you would use; the terminology alone does not establish identical behavior between providers.
- Consider a stable session when the workflow needs successive requests to appear connected through the same address.
- Consider rotation when the workflow requires addresses to change by request or interval.
- Test the target workflow. Check whether continuity, location, and rotation controls work together as needed, rather than assuming that a feature name guarantees the behavior you want.
How to choose a provider for your workload
- Define permitted targets and purpose. Identify what you will access, what data you will collect, and the relevant site policies, contracts, privacy obligations, laws, and provider restrictions. Proxy choice does not resolve authorization.
- Write down exact geographic requirements. Specify country, city, state, ZIP code, carrier, ASN, coordinates, or other filters that matter. Confirm that each required location is currently available; a provider’s overall country or location count does not establish availability for your exact target.
- Specify session behavior and protocol. Decide whether requests need a stable or rotating address and confirm compatibility with your client using the provider’s listed protocol support. For example, the published descriptions list HTTP/S and SOCKS5 for Bright Data’s residential service and HTTP(S), HTTP/3, and SOCKS5 for Oxylabs.
- Compare the full cost model. Estimate request and response sizes, expected traffic, monthly minimums, plan limits, trial conditions, taxes, and any top-up rules. Bright Data confirms pay-as-you-go availability; Smartproxy describes per-GB and unlimited monthly options. The reviewed information does not provide directly comparable current prices for those options.
- Check controls and onboarding. Ask about concurrency, targeting controls, dashboard or API management, support, KYC, target restrictions, and account approval. Bright Data says KYC applies before residential or mobile network use; Oxylabs notes KYC may apply to advanced filters.
- Review sourcing and governance disclosures. Bright Data describes voluntary app-user opt-in with compensation or app benefits; Oxylabs says its pool consists of consenting, informed, fairly compensated users; Smartproxy describes opt-in through an internet-sharing app. These are provider disclosures, not independent audits of every traffic source. Review the provider’s sourcing information, privacy statements, abuse controls, and acceptable-use rules directly.
Run a representative pilot before scaling
No independent, comparable benchmark establishes which of these providers performs best. A controlled pilot is more useful than treating vendor success rates or pool sizes as a ranking.

- Use a small set of targets and locations that you are permitted to access, and keep the request pattern and time window consistent across providers.
- Record successful responses, latency, usable-data yield, and error categories. Separate target-side failures from proxy, configuration, and client errors where you can identify them.
- Measure actual spend against traffic consumed and useful results obtained. Include retries and response payload sizes in your calculation.
- Test the session behavior and geographic precision your production workflow needs, not just whether a basic connection succeeds.
- Scale only after the results, operating terms, and cost model meet your requirements. Recheck the provider’s current location coverage and plan conditions before expanding.
Common evaluation problems and what to check
- Required location is missing: Ask the provider to confirm the exact location and filter availability. Do not infer city, ZIP code, carrier, or state coverage from a headline country count.
- Sessions do not behave as expected: Recheck whether the selected product and plan offer the needed static, sticky, or rotating behavior, and verify the configured rotation interval or session controls with the provider.
- Your client cannot connect: Confirm that the protocol you configured is supported by the selected product and that your client is using the provider’s required connection settings.
- Actual spend exceeds the estimate: Recalculate using consumed traffic, response sizes, retries, monthly minimums, and taxes. A per-GB headline rate alone is not a complete cost estimate.
- Account access or advanced filters are blocked pending review: Check onboarding and KYC requirements before building a production dependency; Bright Data and Oxylabs disclose KYC requirements in the cases noted above.
- Vendor performance figures do not match your pilot: Treat the figures as provider claims, not guarantees for your target, location, plan, or time window. Use measured results from your own permitted workflow to make the decision.
Screenshot testing without a residential proxy
If your need is to save a rendered page as an image or PDF rather than collect data through residential IPs, ScreenshotNeo is a separate tool to try first. It is a website screenshot API and MCP server, not a residential proxy, so it is not a substitute for proxy-based location testing or web scraping. A single GET request can return a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF; the following cURL example saves a WebP screenshot of Stripe. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for parameters.
