Regular WordPress maintenance means keeping software current, confirming you can recover the site, checking its health and testing important pages—not simply clicking “Update.” Handle security updates and failed backups promptly; schedule routine housekeeping around how often your site changes and how important it is to your business.
What to maintain—and what needs prompt attention
A reliable routine has four parts: updates, recoverable backups, health checks and housekeeping. WordPress.org’s maintenance guide recommends setting recurring calendar reminders, but its suggested intervals are planning examples, not a reason to postpone an urgent security update.
- Act promptly: review security updates and investigate failed updates or backups rather than assuming automation succeeded.
- Schedule routinely: review site health, content, links, plugins, themes and unused material.
- After a change: check that the site and its essential user flows still work.
Weekly or when the dashboard calls for attention
Review and apply updates
Open Dashboard > Updates to review available WordPress core, plugin, theme and translation updates. Apply security updates promptly. WordPress can automatically apply minor and security core updates on supported installations; plugin and theme auto-updates can also be enabled. Automation reduces routine manual work, but it does not remove the need to check results.
WordPress.org’s auto-update documentation explains that plugin and theme auto-updates depend on WordPress Cron. If scheduled updates fail, review the notice and check Tools > Site Health for related errors. Auto-update success and failure notifications are useful signals, not proof that every part of the site works.

Check key pages after changes
After an update or other site change, visit the front end. Check the homepage and the flows your site relies on, such as forms, login or checkout. The right checks depend on what the site does; WordPress does not prescribe one universal test protocol.
Monthly: check site health, activity and backups
Use the built-in Site Health tool
Go to Tools > Site Health and work through critical issues and recommended improvements. The tool checks aspects of configuration and reports information related to installed plugins and themes. WordPress.org’s Site Health documentation says, “You should check your website’s health on a regular basis.” Treat its findings as items to understand and resolve, not as a guarantee that the site is secure or problem-free.
Review site activity and important pages
For an active site, WordPress.org’s maintenance guide suggests checking statistics at least monthly. Use that review to identify important landing pages, stale information and reported 404 errors, then prioritize fixes according to visitor and business impact.

Confirm backups are completing
Check that scheduled backups have actually run and that copies are available outside the live site. WordPress.org’s backup guidance recommends keeping backups both on the host and on a computer. A backup you have not restored is not a proven recovery path: when practical, test restoration in a safe environment and know how you would recover before a failure occurs.
Back up before plugin or theme updates and before changing PHP. WordPress’s plugin guidance specifically recommends having a current backup because problems can occur during an update. Backup frequency should reflect how much content changes and how much work you can afford to lose.
Several times a year: review extensions and clean up
Keep only extensions you need
Review installed plugins and themes. Update the ones you actively use and remove obsolete or unwanted ones. A plugin that has not been updated since the latest WordPress core release may be incompatible or have unknown compatibility; check the dashboard’s compatibility information rather than assuming it will work. See WordPress.org’s plugin management guide.

Clean up deliberately
Review spam comments, unused images and database overhead. WordPress.org’s housekeeping guide recommends removing unneeded material and notes that optimization plugins exist. Before deleting anything, confirm it has no current purpose and that you understand whether it can be recovered. Database optimization is an option when there is a concrete reason to do it, not a task that needs to be run blindly on a fixed schedule.
Refresh important content
Check high-value pages for accuracy, working links, grammar and expired offers or instructions. WordPress.org’s 2024 maintenance guidance suggests housekeeping every three to six months; use that as a starting point and adjust for how frequently your site changes.

Yearly: check links, design and significant changes
Look for dead links and 404s
Broken-link checks are worth scheduling even if no particular page appears broken. WordPress.org’s 2024 guide suggests checking every six months to a year depending on site size. For larger sites or frequently changed content, check more often; fix or redirect URLs where appropriate and verify that important pages remain reachable.

Validate after code or stylesheet changes
Check pages affected by code or CSS changes, and validate the broader site after significant modifications. WordPress.org’s guide suggests yearly validation or a check after significant changes. Review the theme and key pages as part of broader housekeeping, but do not switch themes casually on a live site: inspect customizations and preview the result first.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Changing PHP: coordinate with your host
PHP is configured at the hosting or server level, not through the ordinary WordPress update screen. Before changing versions, follow WordPress.org’s PHP compatibility guidance:
- Make a current backup.
- Update WordPress, themes and plugins.
- Check the compatibility information for your theme and plugins, and address reported issues.
- Ask your host how to change the PHP version; contact a professional developer if compatibility problems need investigation.
- After the change, verify the site and its important flows.
Compatibility with a newer PHP version is not guaranteed for every plugin or theme. If you cannot make the change safely or diagnose an issue, the host or a developer may need to handle the server-level work.

A practical cadence to adapt
WordPress.org’s maintenance guide was last updated June 9, 2024. The intervals below reflect its dated planning guidance, not measured performance results or universal requirements. Dashboard alerts, security notices, site size and publishing volume should take priority over a calendar reminder.
| When | Tasks | WordPress.org planning guidance |
|---|---|---|
| Weekly or when alerted | Review updates and failures; apply security updates; check key pages after changes. | No weekly interval prescribed. |
| Monthly | Review Site Health, active-site statistics and backup completion. | Check statistics at least monthly for an active site. |
| Several times a year | Review plugins, themes, spam, unused media, database needs and important content. | Housekeeping every three to six months; backup schedules three to twelve times a year depending on publishing volume. |
| Every six months to a year | Check for dead links and 404s. | Frequency depends on site size. |
| Yearly and after significant changes | Validate the site after code or CSS changes; review theme suitability and key pages. | Yearly validation or after significant modifications. |
When to ask for help
Ask your host about server-level PHP settings, and involve a developer when a compatibility issue requires code changes or the cause is unclear. If Site Health reports an issue you cannot interpret, or scheduled updates keep failing, use the relevant host or professional support rather than repeatedly retrying changes without a recovery plan.
