WordPress can create a thumbnail from a PDF’s first page, but its Imagick rendering path depends on Imagick, ImageMagick, and Ghostscript; if support is missing or rendering fails, WordPress can save the PDF without preview metadata.
What WordPress regenerates for a PDF
WordPress’s PDF preview is an image representation of the document’s first page. Introduced in WordPress 4.7, it is used in places such as the Media Library and attachment screens; when a PDF-capable editor is available, core documents full, thumbnail, medium, and large representations. The full-size representation is rendered at 128 dpi. These capabilities do not mean every server is configured to create previews. WordPress Core’s PDF support note explains the feature and its requirements.
This is different from regenerating the ordinary image sizes for a JPEG or PNG. A PDF preview may be stored as metadata associated with the PDF attachment, and a PDF-thumbnail plugin may also create a separate PNG file beside the PDF.
Check the rendering requirement first
WordPress core’s documented Imagick route requires the PHP Imagick extension, ImageMagick, and Ghostscript. If any part of the rendering stack is unavailable, or generation fails, core can still save the PDF attachment but without preview metadata. Ask your hosting provider or server administrator to verify the actual PHP and server setup if previews are not being created. The PDF Thumbnail Generator plugin also lists Imagick as a requirement. Its plugin listing provides that requirement and describes its PDF-specific behavior.

Regenerate an existing PDF preview
- Confirm the target. In WordPress, find the PDF attachment in the Media Library and verify that the file itself opens. Check whether the problem is a missing or outdated preview, rather than a broken PDF or an unrelated image displayed on a page.
- Choose a PDF-aware regeneration route. PDF Thumbnail Generator says it can regenerate missing or existing PDF thumbnails. Install and use it according to its WordPress.org listing. Its documented example places a generated image such as
example.pdf.pngbeside the PDF in the uploads directory; that output is a separate file, not merely an ordinary image size. - Test one attachment. Regenerate a single PDF before running a larger batch. Inspect its Media Library preview and the PDF’s attachment or page display to confirm the result is the image you expect.
- Expand only after the test succeeds. If the single-file test works, proceed with the tool’s available workflow for the other PDFs. If it fails, do not repeat a large batch: check the renderer requirements and the specific plugin or hosting error first.
Another plugin option is Force Regenerate Thumbnails. Its listing documents Tools-menu and Media Library list-view workflows for selected items or a single attachment, and its changelog records PDF thumbnail generation support. Check its current interface and behavior before choosing it for a site-wide run.
Can WP-CLI regenerate PDF thumbnails?
WP-CLI’s wp media regenerate command is documented for regenerating attachment thumbnails. It can target selected attachment IDs or image sizes and provides options such as --only-missing and --skip-delete. However, its official examples focus on images and do not specifically promise that it rebuilds WordPress PDF previews. Treat it as a testable alternative, not a guaranteed PDF-specific fix. If you have SSH and WP-CLI access, first identify the PDF attachment ID in WordPress, then test the command on that attachment before applying it more broadly. For example:
wp media regenerate 123Replace 123 with the PDF attachment ID. A successful command message alone is not proof that a PDF preview was rebuilt: check the attachment preview afterward. Options such as --only-missing and --skip-delete affect which thumbnails are processed or removed; they do not establish PDF-preview support.

If the preview is still missing
- Ask the host or server administrator to confirm that Imagick, ImageMagick, and Ghostscript are present and usable by the WordPress PHP process.
- Review the exact error or timeout reported by the plugin or host rather than retrying a batch without diagnosing it.
- Confirm that the PDF attachment is valid and that you are checking the correct Media Library item.
- Retry a single PDF only after the rendering issue is addressed, then verify the generated preview in WordPress.
