An RSS feed is a web address that serves a site’s updates as an XML document. An RSS reader checks feeds you subscribe to and gathers new items—such as headlines, summaries, and links—in one place, so you can follow sites without visiting each one manually.
How RSS feeds work
- A publisher makes an RSS feed available at a URL. In RSS 2.0, the feed is a channel containing one or more items. The RSS 2.0 specification defines the format.
- You add the feed URL to an RSS reader, also called a newsreader or aggregator.
- The reader retrieves the feed and presents its entries. It may check periodically; RSS 2.0 includes an optional
ttlvalue, in minutes, as a caching or refresh hint. It does not require every reader to refresh on the same schedule. - You read an item in the reader or follow its link to the publisher’s page. Some items include full text, but others provide only a title, description, or summary and a link.
The RSS Advisory Board describes RSS as “a Web content syndication format.” RSS is commonly represented in XML, a format for structured data. The National Park Service’s RSS help also explains RSS as XML-based.
What a feed contains
A feed’s channel describes the source; its items represent individual updates, such as articles or podcast episodes. Common item fields include a title, link, description, publication date, identifier, and, when relevant, an enclosure pointing to media. An RSS 2.0 item must contain at least a title or description.
Feeds can use extension elements defined in XML namespaces. Readers may differ in which optional features or URI schemes they support, so a feature present in a feed is not guaranteed to appear identically in every reader. Nor does RSS guarantee that a publisher provides complete article text in the feed. The RSS 2.0 specification documents the format and its extensions.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
How to subscribe to a feed
- Choose an RSS reader that works on the device and access method you prefer.
- On the website you want to follow, look for an RSS or XML link or a feed icon. Some sites publish feeds for particular sections as well as for the whole site.
- Open the link if necessary, then copy the feed URL from the browser’s address bar.
- In your reader, use its add-feed or subscribe control and paste the URL. The control’s exact name and location depend on the reader.
- Check the reader for the site’s new entries. If the feed does not appear, make sure you copied the feed URL rather than the URL of a page describing it.
RSS readers may be web services, mobile apps, or browser-integrated software. The Library of Congress describes how readers monitor multiple sites and collect updates in one place. A March 2026 Le Monde guide names Flipboard, Feedly, Netvibes, Inoreader, and NewsBlur as examples; that list is not a ranking or endorsement.
Choose a reader by how you will use it
- Access: Decide whether you want a browser-based service, an installed app, or browser-integrated software.
- Devices: Check that the reader is available on the devices you use.
- Cost: Confirm whether its free option covers your needs; capabilities differ.
- Organization: Consider whether you need features for organizing or saving items.
These are useful comparison points, not a current evaluation of specific readers. Google FeedBurner’s Feed 101 describes variation among readers but does not provide a current comparative review.

RSS and podcasts
Podcast feeds use RSS items to describe episodes and can point to audio files through enclosure information. Platforms may impose requirements beyond what is needed for RSS generally. For example, Apple says a feed submitted to Apple Podcasts must be RSS 2.0, publicly accessible, and contain at least one episode and artwork. Apple also requires each episode to have a unique enclosure with a URL, length, and type, plus a GUID that never changes. Those are Apple submission requirements, not universal requirements for every RSS feed.
RSS versus email subscriptions
RSS updates appear in a reader, while email subscriptions deliver messages to your inbox. The Library of Congress notes that in many cases it offers the same information by either method, though some updates may be available through only one route. Choose based on where you prefer to receive updates: your inbox or a separate reader that can collect multiple feeds.
