For a quick check, use a browser-based broken-link checker; to audit a site you control, crawl it with a site-audit tool; to see what Google has encountered, consult Search Console. These approaches find different things, so the right choice depends on whether you need to inspect a page, map site-wide links, or diagnose Google’s crawl and indexing issues.
Which broken-link checker should you use?
There is no universal winner: the tools below have different discovery inputs and coverage, and the available feature descriptions are not a controlled comparison of accuracy or speed.

Ahrefs’ public tool and its verified-owner Site Audit are separate routes: the former is a public checker, while the latter is a site audit with a verification requirement. Likewise, a search-engine report is not interchangeable with a crawler that follows links from a site entry point.
Use a browser-based checker for a quick inspection
If you need to examine one page or enter a site for a quick check, Ahrefs’ Broken Link Checker is one option. Ahrefs says its public page checks broken inbound and outbound links, and also describes views for dead pages with backlinks or internal links. Its page lists exports and recurring discovery on daily, weekly, or monthly schedules, with comparisons between crawls. These are vendor-stated features, not independently measured results.

Ahrefs also describes a browser extension that highlights links and checks redirects or 404s, with extensions listed for Firefox and Safari. Check the product page for current availability and details before relying on a particular browser workflow. The public checker’s vendor claims do not establish that every URL, resource, or link will be found under every configuration.
Choose a crawler for a site-wide audit
Ahrefs Webmaster Tools for a verified property
If you own the site, Ahrefs Webmaster Tools provides free Site Audit access to verified website owners, according to Ahrefs. The service lists broken-link data for internal and external links. Verification is required, and this use case is not the same as unrestricted paid access or a third-party crawl.

Screaming Frog SEO Spider for a desktop crawl
Screaming Frog SEO Spider is a desktop crawler whose feature list includes broken links, errors, and redirects. Screaming Frog currently states that the free version crawls up to 500 URLs; a license is required to crawl more than 500 URLs and access advanced features. Confirm the current terms on its pricing page, since limits and features can change.
A crawler’s findings depend on its crawl setup and the pages it can reach. Treat “site-wide” as the intended workflow, not a guarantee that every URL or resource is covered in every configuration.

Use Search Console for Google’s crawl and indexing view
Search Console is useful when the question is what Google encountered while fetching or indexing URLs. It does not provide a complete outbound-link audit: a link on your page can be broken even if it is not represented as a Google indexing issue. The 2026 guide to finding broken links distinguishes Search Console’s reported URLs from page-level checks and full-site crawls; it also describes browser developer tools and the online W3C checker as other methods. The guide notes that W3C recursive checks have limits and pace requests to reduce load.
Use the method that matches the question: a page checker for a particular page, a crawler for link relationships across a site you control, or Search Console for Google-reported crawl and indexing problems. None of those inputs alone proves complete coverage of every link.

How to act on a broken-link result
An error response is a signal to investigate, not an automatic instruction to delete the link. Inspect the destination and any redirect, then decide whether to correct the URL, point it to a relevant replacement, restore the missing page, or remove the link if it no longer belongs.
- Confirm the reported URL and the page containing the link.
- Check whether the destination redirects to an appropriate live page or returns an error.
- Choose a repair based on the page’s purpose and context; do not redirect to an unrelated destination merely to eliminate an error report.
- After making a change, run the relevant check again or compare a later crawl if the tool supports it.
Detection features and reports do not themselves establish the right repair. Editorial judgment matters, especially where a dead page has inbound links or an internal link still serves a reader’s intended path.

What this review can and cannot establish
The product descriptions support comparing workflows, stated features, access conditions, and the Screaming Frog free crawl limit. They do not establish comparative accuracy, detection rates, crawl speed, or a best-performing tool. Ahrefs’ promotional statements about its crawler or backlink database should be treated as vendor claims, not independent evidence.
For a small one-off check, start with a browser-based checker. For recurring audits of your own verified property, consider a verified-site audit tool; for a configurable desktop crawl, consider Screaming Frog and its stated URL limit. Use Search Console alongside these methods when you need Google’s view, not as a replacement for auditing outbound links.
