Then open the feed URL directly to check the result. Use custom code only when those built-in controls cannot produce the output you need.
Choose the right feed before changing its settings
WordPress supports several feed formats, including RSS 2.0, RSS 0.92, RDF/RSS 1.0 and Atom. It also supports a separate comments feed, which is not the same as the feed of site posts. Use the feed endpoint intended for your subscribers or integration rather than assuming every feed URL is interchangeable. The WordPress Feeds handbook lists feed types, template tags and guidance on feed links.
A theme may not show a visible feed link for every supported format. If you cannot find a link on the site, that alone does not mean the feed is unavailable. Check the appropriate endpoint directly.
Set the number of posts and content length
- Open Settings > Reading. In the WordPress dashboard, find the “Syndication feeds show the most recent” setting.
- Choose the item count. Set how many recent posts the feed should include. WordPress does not prescribe one ideal number for every site. A deeper feed provides more recent history in one response, but readers may apply their own import limits and a larger response can carry more content.
- Choose what each item contains. Under “For each article in a feed, show,” select full text or an excerpt. Full text gives subscribers more of each post without opening the site; excerpts make the feed shorter and may save bandwidth.
- Save the changes and inspect the feed itself. Confirm the number of entries and the content shown match your choices. The WordPress Reading screen documentation explains these controls.
Choose based on the experience you want to provide and the size of the feed response, not on a supposed universal best setting. If you need a title-only item or another format not offered by the Reading screen, the built-in options may not be enough.

Customize the feed only when settings are insufficient
For requirements beyond item count and full text versus excerpt, WordPress has feed templates and customization options. The Feeds handbook is the official starting point for understanding the supported feeds and their customization. A WordPress support discussion describes changing RSS output with template code and filters such as the_content_feed and the_excerpt_rss, but that thread is a community example rather than a guarantee that a particular snippet suits your site.
Test custom changes on a staging copy where possible, and check the generated feed after each change. The WordPress support thread about removing excerpts and images also illustrates why theme, plugin and caching behavior may matter when output differs from expectations.

Check stale or unexpected feed output
If a feed reader continues to show old content after you change settings, first open the feed URL directly. This helps distinguish what WordPress is currently returning from what the reader is displaying. If the direct response is also unexpected, clear relevant caches and investigate plugin or theme behavior methodically; caching was one possible cause in the cited support discussion, not a universal explanation.
- Direct feed is correct, reader is stale: allow for reader-side delay or refresh behavior, and check that the reader follows the feed URL you changed.
- Direct feed is stale or wrong: clear relevant site or plugin caches, then check whether a plugin or theme is modifying feed output.
- Only a custom field or formatting requirement is missing: review the applicable feed template or customization approach, then test the output again.
The WordPress RSS block documentation covers the block used to display an external RSS feed on a page or post. Its display controls concern that block; they are distinct from the Reading settings that determine the site’s own feed output.

Keep old feed links working when moving a feed
If a site migration or configuration change gives the feed a new address, redirect the old endpoint to the new one so existing links have a route forward. WordPress’s Feeds handbook includes rewrite examples for forwarding old feed paths. After setting a redirect, test the old address and confirm it reaches the intended feed.
