Don’t optimize for the lowest request count alone: a request matters most when it adds significant transfer or delay, blocks rendering, or loads something the page doesn’t use.
Why WordPress pages make HTTP requests
A browser requests the files and services needed to display and operate a page. A WordPress page might load stylesheets, scripts, images, fonts, and content from third-party services. Themes and plugins can add assets, sometimes on pages that do not use their features.
Request count is a diagnostic clue, not a performance score. A large file, a slow response, or a script that delays rendering may matter more than several small requests. There is no universal ideal request count established by WordPress documentation; judge changes by page-loading behavior and whether the site still works correctly.
Measure a page before changing it
Choose a representative page and record a baseline using your browser’s developer tools or an online page benchmark. WordPress recommends these kinds of performance tests in its Optimization handbook.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- In the Network view, note each request’s initiator, resource type, transfer size, timing, and cache status.
- Identify whether the request comes from your site or a third party.
- Look for assets that load on pages without the feature they support, as well as slow or render-blocking resources.
- Keep the test conditions consistent when you compare results after a change.
Test one representative page first. If a change affects shared theme or plugin assets, check other important page types too.
Remove assets the page does not need
Review which plugins and theme features add CSS, JavaScript, images, or fonts to the page. WordPress recommends removing unnecessary plugins and selectively investigating plugin performance, rather than assuming every plugin has the same effect.

- Remove plugins and theme features the site no longer uses.
- If a feature is needed only on certain pages, ask a developer to conditionally enqueue its assets only on those pages.
- Keep assets required for forms, navigation, ecommerce, accessibility, analytics, embeds, and other actual site behavior.
Do not disable a plugin or strip its files from a page just because it appears in the request list. First establish what the asset does, then test the relevant functionality after changing it.
Enqueue scripts and styles through WordPress
Theme and plugin code should use WordPress’s asset APIs instead of hardcoding script or stylesheet tags into templates. Themes can enqueue CSS and JavaScript using the Theme Handbook’s asset guidance; plugin authors can follow Learn WordPress’s enqueue tutorial.

Use wp_enqueue_style() and wp_enqueue_script() at the appropriate hooks, and register script dependencies accurately. WordPress can then account for dependencies when it handles registered files. The wp_enqueue_script() reference documents the function and its options.
Defer scripts only when their behavior allows it
In WordPress 6.3 and later, the enqueue and registration APIs support script loading strategies including defer and async. With defer, a script runs after the document has been parsed; deferred scripts preserve their order relative to one another. WordPress explains the change in its WordPress 6.3 announcement.

Deferring changes when a script executes; it does not remove the request. Check dependencies, DOM timing, and interactions before applying a strategy. Test features such as menus, forms, and purchase flows after each change.

Use browser caching for repeat visits
Configure sensible caching for static files so returning visitors do not have to download unchanged resources again. WordPress’s Hosting Handbook performance guidance describes how Cache-Control governs reuse and how versioned asset URLs let browsers request a new file after it changes, rather than keep using a stale cached copy.
Consider a CDN when delivery is the problem
A content delivery network can serve static files such as images, JavaScript, CSS, and theme files from locations closer to visitors, and may reduce work on the WordPress origin server. WordPress discusses this option in its Optimization handbook. A CDN is a delivery choice, not a guarantee of fewer total requests or faster results for every site; evaluate it against the locations of your audience and measure the outcome.
Retest performance and site functionality
After each change, repeat the same test and compare the waterfall, transfer sizes, timing, and cache behavior with your baseline. Also check the page’s real functions: menus, forms, purchases, embeds, and other interactive features. If performance gets worse or something breaks, revert the change and investigate the affected asset or dependency.
Avoid stacking optimization plugins that rewrite or combine the same files without checking compatibility. Concatenating CSS or JavaScript is not a universal fix; whether it helps depends on the site’s assets, dependencies, delivery setup, and measured results. WordPress’s website optimization lesson provides additional performance context.
